Ahead of PM's visit, MP LoP Umang Singhar questions govt on women welfare, demands answers on key schemes
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], May 30 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress MLA Umang Singhar on Friday raised a series of pointed questions ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bhopal, where he would address a women-centric program on Devi Ahilyabai Holkar's 300th birth anniversary.
Speaking to ANI, Singhar said, 'PM Modi is coming to talk about women empowerment, but I want to ask him directly--will Ladli Behans actually receive Rs 3,000 under the Ladli Behna Yojana? Will self-help groups (SHGs) of women, who do not have employment and are running only on paper, receive any real financial assistance? Will they be connected to livelihood? PM Modi should tell us.'
Singhar also criticised the BJP, accusing it of prioritising image-building over substance.
'Why has the government stopped providing benefits under the Ujjwala Yojana? Will the cylinders, which are kept empty, be refilled again? Will inflation be reduced in the state and the nation? We see there is a shortage of urea. Will Madhya Pradesh get urea? Will the income of farmers double? What support will farmers and small businesses receive through MSMEs in Madhya Pradesh? Your government has also reduced funds allocated to MGNREGA and tribal welfare schemes. Today, the BJP has become a party focused only on advertisements. It has become a party above public sentiment,' the Congress leader said.
The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP government has disrespected women. 'A female army officer was insulted (referring to MP minister Vijay Shah's remark against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi), who is a daughter of Madhya Pradesh. Will PM Modi ask for Vijay Shah's resignation? I think PM Modi talks about something in the Mann ki Baat program, but has something else in his inner heart,' he added.
PM Modi will address the 'Women Empowerment Maha Sammelan' program at Jamboree Ground in Bhopal on May 31.
The event, centered on women, is expected to witness the participation of around two lakh women from across the state. (ANI)

Gandhi's Principles More Relevant Today Amid Cross-Border Terrorism: Ravi Shankar Prasad In U.K.
BJP Member of Parliament Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasized the continued relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence principles during a visit to London on Sunday, particularly in light of cross-border terrorism sponsored by Pakistan. Speaking as part of India's diplomatic outreach following the Pahalgam terrorist incident that resulted in 26 casualties, Prasad addressed the significance of Gandhi's teachings in contemporary times. The all-party delegation began their United Kingdom visit by offering floral tributes at the memorials of both Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, followed by addressing a large gathering at the Indian High Commission. At Gandhi's memorial in Tavistock Square, Prasad expressed pride in paying respects to the Mahatma in the heart of London, stating that Gandhi's principles of non-violence, truth, harmony, and goodwill hold even greater importance in today's era of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Former Minister M.J. Akbar provided historical context, referencing what he described as the first documented case of terrorism as state policy by Pakistan in October 1947, when thousands of terrorists were deployed to Kashmir. Akbar noted that while Gandhi advocated non-violence, he spoke forcefully against these raiders and terrorists, later telling a prayer meeting that Indian soldiers had a duty to defeat terrorism without retreat. The delegation also explored the Ambedkar Museum in north London, where Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi reflected on the constitutional architect's legacy. She highlighted the contrast between India's democratic progress since 1947 and Pakistan's ongoing struggles with governance, noting that while both nations gained independence simultaneously, India became a republic in 1950 while Pakistan continues to face military dominance over civilian government. At India House in London, hundreds of diaspora community leaders and members gathered, displaying national flags and chanting patriotic slogans. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami received the nine-member team, with Prasad assuring the community that India remains strong and capable of addressing Pakistani terrorism while urging them to spread India's message globally that terrorists must face consequences. The evening event, which opened with the Indian National Anthem, featured speeches from various delegation members representing different political parties. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari emphasized their unity despite different party affiliations when it comes to national interests, while former Deputy National Security Adviser Pankaj Saran declared Operation Sindoor a complete success as per the Prime Minister's directive. High Commissioner Doraiswami stressed that terrorism should be treated as a global concern rather than an issue confined to India, calling for international recognition of this reality. The community gathering concluded with a private dinner meeting with the UK's shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel and her Conservative Party colleagues. The multi-party delegation, comprising representatives from various political parties including MPs Purandeswari, Chaturvedi, Ghulam Ali Khatana, Amar Singh, Samik Bhattacharya, M. Thambidurai, along with Akbar and Ambassador Saran, has planned multiple engagements with think tanks, parliamentarians, and diaspora leaders during their three-day UK visit ending Tuesday. Following their UK visit, the delegation will proceed to the European Union and Germany for similar discussions with parliamentarians, political leaders, and diaspora communities. This delegation represents one of seven multi-party groups India has deployed to visit 33 global capitals as part of an international outreach campaign highlighting Pakistan's connections to terrorism. The diplomatic mission follows escalated tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, which led to Indian precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during early May. Pakistan's subsequent attempts to target Indian military installations on consecutive days met with strong Indian responses, with hostilities eventually ceasing through dialogue between military operations directors from both nations on May 10.

SAD, Cong, BJP, AAP: Kamaljit Karwal jumps ship again ahead of Ludhiana West bypoll
Kamaljit Singh Karwal from Ludhiana has perhaps made the term 'Aaya Ram, Gaya Ram' seem feeble, if his political career is anything to go by. Ahead of the June 19 Ludhiana West bypoll, Karwal once again jumped ship Sunday and re-joined the Congress. This is Karwal's sixth switch — from SAD, Congress, BJP, AAP and now back to the Congress — all in a little over a decade. Joining the party in the presence of Congress' bypoll candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh, Karwal said, 'Outraged by the anti-people policies of the AAP government, and their indifference towards Punjabis, I have done aghar waapsi today.' Elected an independent councillor in 2007 and then on SAD symbol in 2012, Karwal was once the right hand man of two-time former Atam Nagar MLA and SAD rebel Simarjeet Singh Bains. He left SAD along with Bains after they formed their own political group. However, Karwal's relations with Bains soured and he was again back to SAD in January 2015 in the presence of then deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal. In December 2016, ahead of the 2017 Punjab assembly elections, Karwal joined Congress in the presence of former CM Captain Amarinder Singh. He then contested assembly elections from Atam Nagar twice on Congress ticket — in 2017 and 2022— and lost both. In both contests, he was pitted against his bete noire Simarjeet Singh Bains. While in 2017 Bains won, in 2022 both Bains and Karwal lost to AAP's Kulwant Singh Sidhu. Later, in the run-up to 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Karwal quit Congress and switched to BJP. He joined BJP in the presence of state president Sunil Jakhar in Chandigarh in December 2023, and said that he left Congress due ' to poor leadership at all levels, policies and highhandedness in the party'. Karwal then moved to the AAP in December 2024, and was 'welcomed' into the party by state president Aman Arora at Chandigarh. Now when he is back to Congress, the 'Bains brothers' — Simarjeet and his elder brother (also an ex-MLA) Balwinder Singh Bains — are also in Congress. Last year, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, they had merged their Lok Insaaf Party with the Congress. However, when Karwal 're-joined' Congress in the presence of Ashu, both Bains brothers were missing from the event, and so was Punjab Congress chief and Ludhiana Lok Sabha MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring who had inducted Bains brothers into the party last year. Asked why he keeps switching parties, Karwal said: 'Congress is like a family for me and fights keep happening in a family. I had joined BJP but realized that it doesn't have any future in Punjab. No matter how hard they try, they can never form government in Punjab. I have no issues with Bains brothers being in Congress. We all will work for the party as per assigned duties.'
