RMAF must transform to face future threats, says air force chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) must embrace transformation as a necessity to meet future challenges, said its chief, General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan.
He said all members of the air force must be fully committed to implementing its strategic development plan, Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55).
"Transformation is no longer an option but a necessity.
"CAP55 is our strategic development plan that reflects our aspiration to build a lean, networked RMAF. It encompasses transformation across combat capabilities, logistics, training, intelligence, and future warfare systems.
"I urge all members of the RMAF to carry out this plan with strong commitment and transparency.
"Remember, CAP55 is not for me, but for the future generations who will safeguard our airspace," he said in a special address in conjunction with the RMAF's 67th anniversary today.
Asghar also called for the strengthening of human capital development within the force, citing today's multi-faceted threat environment.
"Today, we face multi-dimensional threats: cyber attacks, electronic warfare, autonomous drones, and hybrid conflicts.
"Readiness is not just about weaponry, but also mindset. Investment in human capital development must be strengthened.
"We need competent pilots, engineers, cyber operators, and leaders who are creative and forward-thinking," he said.
Asghar said the RMAF's journey since June 1, 1958, had demonstrated its maturity as a credible and modern force.
"This anniversary does not just represent our maturity as a key component of the Armed Forces, but also commemorates the spirit of struggle, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of our air force heroes.
"Indeed, a lot has been achieved and we must continue to move forward with greater strength.
"We are standing on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way for us. The transformation that we envision must be built on strong discipline, continuous training, dedication, and patriotism."
Calling for the highest standards of conduct, Asghar also reminded personnel to uphold the principles of integrity and professionalism.
"In realising our transformation goals, we must adhere to good governance, high integrity, and efficient resource management.
"Safety must never be compromised. Avoid negligence, follow procedures, and ensure every operation, training, and administrative process is carried out professionally," he said.
Asghar also added that a balanced work environment and support for families must be strengthened to enhance morale and performance.

Air Force veteran's Jalur Gemilang-bedecked bike draws attention

KUANTAN: Every year, Aug 1 marks a special date for 64-year-old Mohd Mustafa Abu Bakar, a moment he eagerly awaits to deck out his motorcycle in flags, signalling the start of the National Month. This year was no different for the Air Force veteran, affectionately known as Pak Mus. Staying true to his tradition, he adorned his beloved motorcycle and helmet with dozens of Jalur Gemilang in various sizes, along with the Pahang state flag, all in his personal campaign to ignite the spirit of independence. Riding through town on his scooter, draped with 75 flags and accompanied by patriotic songs, the decorated veteran becomes a moving spectacle, drawing smiles, photographs and videos from people of all ages. "I look forward to Aug 1 every year. By midnight, my motorcycle is fully decorated in flags and ready to roll. This is my way of showing love for my country and reminding people that the independence month has begun, and that we should embrace it," he said. For Pak Mus, the initiative is more than just a personal ritual; it is a responsibility to lift the Merdeka spirit and appreciate the peace and unity enjoyed today as a multiracial nation. Adding a special touch to his patriotic display, the food stall owner never hesitates to spend his own money on hundreds of mini flags, small tokens he happily hands out to the public, especially children who are fascinated by his flag-covered motorcycle. "Each day, I'll make my way to two or three popular spots like Teluk Cempedak and Dataran Sekilau, carrying a loudspeaker. I'll park my motorcycle, play patriotic songs such as Inilah Barisan Kita, and do my part to lift the community's Merdeka spirit," said the former Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel, who served for 13 years from 1981. "And when I see children asking for the flags on my motorcycle, I feel bad to say no. So I give them another Jalur Gemilang to make them happy," he added with a smile. A father of three, Pak Mus said the encouragement he receives from the public fuels his passion to continue the tradition he began in 2019. His initiative has also drawn warm responses from Malaysians of all backgrounds as well as tourists, who often stop to take pictures with him. A native of Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan, Mustafa is grateful for the courtesy shown by fellow road users whenever he rides his flag-adorned motorcycle. "Motorists of all races have been very sporting. They even smile and give me space at traffic lights. I take it as a sign of respect for our national pride, the Jalur Gemilang," he said, hoping more people will take the initiative to fly the flag at home. "One home, one flag - that's how we can keep the Merdeka spirit alive and show our patriotism," he urged. "Gaining independence was no easy feat. Many sacrificed for the peace and unity we enjoy today. Let's all take responsibility to preserve it," he added. - Bernama

Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Air Force chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris said Malaysia firmly believed that the harm caused by landmines far outweighs any perceived military utility. This conviction has led Malaysia to take a firm stand and actively support the global effort towards a landmine-free world, including through a defence cooperation programme in demining and mine destruction with different countries. bootstrap slideshow He added that the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) continue to contribute to humanitarian efforts in mine-affected countries such as Cambodia and Bosnia. 'While it is true that we are already becoming a landmine-free country, we maintain an unwavering obligation to provide support to the victims of landmines. 'In Malaysia, the support was provided through the Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Affairs Department, which offers various forms of assistance and support to veterans, including financial assistance, welfare programmes, and assistance with employment and healthcare,' he said in his keynote address during the International Seminar Towards a Landmine-free World - Case of Azerbaijan, here on Monday. Muhamad Norazlan noted that according to the Landmines Monitor 2024 report, at least 5,757 people have been either killed or wounded by landmines and other ERWs worldwide in 2023. In Azerbaijan alone, there have been 3,400 victims of landmines in the last 30 years, with an estimated 1.5 million landmines still hidden. He said this is not just mere statistics, but represents real people whose lives have been irrevocably impacted by these indiscriminate weapons.
