Auburn flips 4-star QB Peyton Falzone from Penn State

Reuters26-06-2025
June 26 - Auburn, a late entry into the recruitment of four-star quarterback Peyton Falzone, got the recruit to flip from Penn State to the Tigers on Thursday.
Falzone announced on social media and told recruiting websites that he is committing to Auburn, after decommitting from Virginia Tech in November 2024 and then, in April, choosing Penn State in his home state.
The Nazareth (Pa.) Academy High School rising senior had posted on June 2 on social media that he received an offer from Auburn. He has not made an official or unofficial visit to the campus.
"Auburn is a place full of tradition," Falzone said in an interview with 247Sports. "My family and I have spent a lot of time discussing the school and its blend of elite football and high-level academics. It has it all. I'm blessed to be able to play at a school with a strong tradition of faith and family running throughout the university and the community. All of that is very important to us. I can't wait to be there. War Eagle."
Falzone is ranked the No. 246 prospect in the nation, No. 18 quarterback and No. 6 player in Pennsylvania for the Class of 2026, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Listed at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Falzone threw for 2,135 yards, 23 touchdowns and four interceptions, and rushed 78 times for 697 yards and eight TDs in 2024. As a sophomore in the 2023 season, Falzone passed for 2,528 yards with 19 TDs and four interceptions and rushed for 440 yards and 11 TDs.
He also has offers from Iowa, Utah, Syracuse, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin as well as Penn State, Virginia Tech and others.

Mayo GAA to propose Andy Moran as new football manager

Andy Moran is set to become the new manager of the Mayo senior footballers following the conclusion of the recruitment process. Colm Boyle and Paddy Tally will be part of his backroom team. An executive meeting of the Mayo County Board was called for Monday night after two candidates for the role were interviewed last week, 2017 Footballer of the Year Moran and Armagh All-Ireland winner Tony McEntee. Advertisement Following the gathering, Mayo GAA said in a statement that the ratification of Moran will be sought at the next county board meeting. He will be joined by his former Mayo teammate Boyle, and Tally, who recently stood down as Derry manager after just eight months in charge. Moran is set to take over from Kevin McStay, who was relieved of his role last June after three years in charge. Moran retired from intercounty football in 2019 after 183 appearances in League and Championship for Mayo. A two-time All Star, he won eight Connacht SFC championships. After retiring, Moran was appointed Leitrim manager in 2021. In 2024, they were promoted from Division 4. He also took charge of the county U20s that year, leading them to victory over his native county in the Connacht U20 championship. Advertisement After leaving Leitrim, Moran joined Monaghan as a coach. They reached the All-Ireland quarter-final before losing to Donegal. Mayo endured a disappointing campaign. They reached the Division 1 League final, where they were beaten by Kerry before going on to lose the Connacht final to rivals Galway. A group stage defeat against Cavan ultimately cost them as they failed to progress to the knockout rounds. Mayo GAA described the recruitment process as "comprehensive and robust" adding that the "level of interest and calibre of applicants once again highlights the strength and reputation of Mayo football".

Steelers DT Cameron Heyward willing to miss games in contract dispute

August 12 - Pittsburgh Steelers star defensive tackle Cameron Heyward insinuated Monday that he is willing to sit out some regular-season games to get a better contract. The disgruntled Heyward has been with the team in training camp but recently began sitting out practice sessions amid a hold-in. "My goal is to be out here, and I don't know what's going to happen," Heyward told reporters on Monday. "I've had to be honest with myself to be ready for every option. And has it gone the way I wanted to go? No. "If it did, I would be out there playing and practicing, but I'd like to put this in the rearview mirror and worry about ball and worry about the New York Jets (in) Week 1." Heyward, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, signed a two-year, $29 million extension with the Steelers last September. It keeps him with the team through the 2026 season. Defensive player salaries have spiked upwards and Pittsburgh linebacker T.J. Watt received a three-year, $123 million deal in the offseason with $108 million guaranteed. The $41 million annual average set a record for defensive players. The 36-year-old Heyward wants his piece of the financial pie. "I'm looking to be valued," Heyward said. .".. I know what I bring to this team and what I'm capable of on and off the field, so it's hard for me, after the year I've had (in 2024), to really justify playing at the number I'm playing at. "I understand. I signed a contract last year, but to be completely honest with you, when I signed that, I told him when I have an All-Pro year expecting me to come back and you can look at the contract and see what it was. But I think everybody kind of giggled a little bit, but in my head, I used it as motivation to go out there and prove it." Heyward earned first-team All-Pro honors last season for the fourth time in a career that began with the Steelers in 2011. He had 71 tackles, eight sacks and a career-high 11 pass breakups last season. Heyward has 88.5 career sacks in 211 games (176 starts). He will likely warrant heavy Pro Football Hall of Fame consideration after his career ends. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin isn't overly concerned with the stalemate between Heyward and club management. "It's just a component of big business," Tomlin told reporters. "It's not exclusive to us or to Cam. It's going on in a lot of locations. "The great thing about it is we've had good relations with Cam since he's been here. He's been a heck of a Steeler. We communicate formally and informally. I imagine it'll remain the same, and we'll find a way to see our way through these things." --Field Level Media

Hurzeler does not 'fear' losing key Brighton players

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler says he does not fear losing key players to bigger clubs in the transfer window. Carlos Baleba, 21, is the latest Seagulls player to be linked with a move away from the club, with Manchester United reportedly hoping to sign the Cameroon midfielder. Brighton's recruitment model has been to buy and nurture talented young players based on data analysis, and sell for a higher fee when the time is right for the club. In recent seasons, the sales of players like Joao Pedro, Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo - whose move to Chelsea in 2023 was a then British record transfer of £115m - have all generated substantial profit. "No chance. I don't feel fear," 32-year-old Hurzeler told the Monday Night Club when asked if he worries about having to sell key members of his squad. "I'm not afraid of anything because the only thing we can do is be the best version we can be every day, like work as hard as we can. "All the other things we can't influence, so we really have to focus on us. "For sure, we can't spend the money like the big teams but one of our biggest values is togetherness. And if you stay together, if we try to push our limits and increase the boundaries, then I'm sure we can compete with the big teams." Brighton, who finished eighth in the Premier League in German Hurzeler's first season in charge, start their 2025-26 campaign at home to Fulham on Saturday (15:00 BST). The Seagulls ended their pre-season unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Saturday, with Maxim de Cuyper, a 24-year-old Belgian defender signed for a reported £17.5m, scoring his first goal for the club. Baleba was absent as he continues to recover from a knee injury sustained in June, but is expected to be back for the opener against Marco Silva's Fulham. Brighton chairman Paul Barber said during a fan forum he hopes Baleba, who has three years left on his contract at Amex Stadium, stays "for years to come" - but could not make any promises. Hurzeler, meanwhile, did not speak about Baleba's situation when appearing on the Monday Night Club. "It's not easy, but we proved last season that we are a very competitive team," he said about whether he feels frustrated when players are linked with rival clubs. "Without Joao Pedro, for sure, he was an unbelievable player. But we can't replace him with one player, but we can replace him as a team. And that's our focus." Brazil forward Joao Pedro joined Chelsea for £60m on an eight-year contract this summer. Hurzeler continued: "We as a club always find solutions and I'm sure in the future we will find solutions. That's our model, we have to accept it. "I think that as a club we have proved we are not only selling big players. We have had offers for other players - big offers for [Kaoru] Mitoma and other players. We proved that we are not selling every player. "Of course there were some big players who left the club, but there are new players that are coming into the club. With the togetherness we have, with the team chemistry we have, we can compete with the big teams, and we can compete with teams who might be individually better than us."
