US Mulled Use Of Russia Icebreakers For Gas Development Ahead Of Summit, Say Sources

NDTV9 hours ago
The United States has had internal discussions on using Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker vessels to support the development of gas and LNG projects in Alaska as one of the possible deals to aim for when President Donald Trump meets Vladimir Putin on Friday, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Trump landed in Alaska on Friday for what he called a "high stakes" summit with Russia's Putin to discuss a ceasefire deal for Ukraine and end the deadliest war in Europe since World War Two.
Both the US and Russian presidents, due to meet at a Cold War-era air force base in Alaska's largest city, are seeking wins from their first face-to-face talks since Trump returned to the White House.
The icebreaker idea has been discussed among White House officials as one of the potential deals to try to strike with Russia at the Alaska summit, one of the sources said.
The ongoing talks between the US and Russia over Ukraine have included discussions about business deals. The White House is planning to continue this approach at the summit on Friday, said the source, who like the others spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Kremlin officials were not available for comment.
Russia operates the world's only fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers, which play a central role in maintaining year-round shipping access along the Northern Sea Route, a strategic path for global energy and trade flows.
Trump's administration is pushing to transport gas from Alaska's remote north to Asian clients.
Trump has pitched Alaska LNG, a proposed $44 billion project to ship liquefied natural gas along a 800-mile pipeline from Alaska, to Asian buyers as a way to reduce their dependence on Russian LNG.
Another project, similarly aimed at Asian markets, is Qilak LNG, which is targeting 4 million tons per annum of LNG.
Qilak did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
An industry source said that Alaska LNG had "no identified needs for Russian icebreakers."
Reuters was not immediately able to establish which, if any, specific project would benefit if a deal was reached in the Alaska talks.
The nuclear icebreakers could also facilitate the transport of construction materials and equipment to remote areas in Alaska, where infrastructure is limited and weather conditions are harsh.

After Alaska summit with Putin, Trump again claims he prevented India-Pakistan 'nuclear' war

Trump has once again claimed credit for preventing wars worldwide, including between India and Pakistan, after talks with Putin at Alaska summit. US President Donald Trump gestures as he walks off stage following a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reuters US President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his claims of preventing wars across the globe, including between India and Pakistan, after his Alaska summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He defended his administration's push for ceasefires in conflicts that, as Fox News host Sean Hannity noted, 'do not impact the United States as much as [they do] allies in Europe.' Trump's remarks came just hours after his much-anticipated meeting with Putin ended without any breakthrough on halting Moscow's war in Ukraine. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In an interview on Hannity, the Fox News primetime show, Trump was asked why he was devoting time and energy to disputes far from US shores. Sean Hannity pressed him, 'This (Ukraine war) does not impact United States as much as it does our allies in Europe. But you are doing it anyway. Why?' Trump replied that his efforts were aimed at saving lives and preventing catastrophic escalation. 'Number one, to save lives in all cases. Cause wars are wars. See what would have happened with Cambodia as an example. I was involved with negotiating a trade,' Trump said. He then claimed that a ceasefire between India and Pakistan would not have been possible without his involvement, a claim New Delhi has consistently denied. 'Take a look at India and Pakistan. They were shooting down airplanes already. And that would have been maybe nuclear. I would have said it was gonna get nuclear, but I was able to get it done. Number one is lives, number two is everything else,' Trump added. Trump has often said that without his intervention, 'six major wars' would have erupted worldwide. 'India would be fighting with Pakistan. You see what we did yesterday with two nations that we were trading with,' he said, referring to the recent ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after five days of border clashes that left at least 33 people dead. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to Trump, Washington pressured the two Southeast Asian nations by threatening to withhold trade deals unless they agreed to stop fighting. 'We got them settled in 24 hours,' he said. India rejects Trump's claims Trump's comments once again clash with New Delhi's repeated denials. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Parliament that the understanding with Pakistan was reached directly through talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), without any US involvement.

Trump makes huge announcement on secondary tariffs on India over Russian oil before meeting Putin, says 'Maybe I..'

Trump makes huge announcement on secondary tariffs on India over Russian oil before meeting Putin, says 'Maybe I..' Amid tensions with India over imposing tariff, US President Donald Trump said that he may not put secondary penalty on New Delhi over the Russian oil purchases. The US president made the remarks before meeting Vladimir Putin in ALaska. The meeting concluded without any agreement on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. 'Well, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it,' Trump said. Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security,' it said.

B-2 Bomber Roars Over Putin's Head During Alaska Summit With Trump

As US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met in Alaska for what White House described as "historic", a US Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bomber flew across the sky above. In a widely shared video on X, it can be seen that a red carpet was laid out for the Presidents to walk on as the meeting was held to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Seconds into the video, the B-2 zoomed across above the Russian President who lifted his head and looked towards the sky and saw the Spirit stealth bomber and the F-22 Raptor fighter jets passing by. WATCH VIDEO HERE: Trump just flew a B-2 stealth bomber over Putin's head… Absolutely incredible. — Geiger Capital (@Geiger_Capital) August 15, 2025 US' B-2 Stealth Bomber According to the official website of the US, the B-2 Spirit is a "multi-role bomber" which can deliver both conventional and nuclear munitions. It can penetrate the most sophisticated defenses and it is difficult for the defensive systems to detect, track and engage with it. The B-2 has a crew of two pilots, a pilot in the left seat and mission commander in the right. It was first publicly displayed in 1988 and its first flight was in 1989. Trump-Putin Alaska Summit Putin and Trump concluded their joint press conference on Friday (local time). The Russian President also invited the US President for further talks in Moscow. "Next time in Moscow," Putin said in the press conference. Trump accepted the suggestion, saying, "That's an interesting one. I'll get a little heat on that one, but I can see it possibly happening." According to ANI, despite the lack of a formal agreement, Trump described the summit as 'Productive'. Speaking at the joint press conference in Alaska, the US President also claimed that thousands of lives could be saved weekly if both sides acted, adding that Putin shared the same goal.
