Chito Martinez, only Belize native MLB player, dead at 59
Chito Martinez, the only MLB player to ever hail from Belize, has died, the Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday. He was 59.
Martinez played three years in the majors for the Orioles as an outfielder from 1991 to 1993. He played in 158 career games, hitting .259 with 18 home runs, 58 RBI and 22 doubles.
"We mourn the passing of former Orioles outfielder Chito Martinez, the only native of Belize to play in the majors," the Orioles said in a post on X.
Dalton Martinez, Chito's son, wrote on X that his father passed away on Easter.
"Sunday night on Easter, my dad was taken away off this earth unexpectedly," he wrote. "We desperately need help in this time. My father was one of the best men. Taught the game of baseball the right way. Taught young men how to be better. His presence in my life can never be replaced. As I pick up the pieces to my life, please consider helping.
"A kind soul has left us too soon."
The cause of death was not made known.
Chito Martinez was a sixth-round pick in the 1984 Draft by the Kansas City Royals out of Brother Martin High School in New Orleans.
The Royals released him in 1990 and he signed with the Orioles days later. The Orioles released him after the 1993 season and he later joined the Minnesota Twins. But he never made an appearance with the Twins.

NEW YORK — Carlos Narváez put Boston ahead with a three-run homer against his former team, and the Red Sox overcame two home runs by Aaron Judge in an 11-7 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday night. Rafael Devers also went deep as Boston equaled a season high with five longballs to take two of three games at Yankee Stadium in the first series this season between the longtime rivals. Narváez signed with the Yankees in 2015 and broke into the big leagues with them last year, getting into six games before New York traded him to Boston in December. The rookie catcher gave the Red Sox a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning by lifting a fastball from Carlos Rodón (8-4) into the left-field seats. Judge hit a pair of two-run homers for his fourth multihomer game this season and the 43rd of his career. He connected in the first off rookie Hunter Dobbins (3-1) and again in the ninth, ending the night with a .396 batting average. Boston rookie Kristian Campbell hit a two-run homer to the short porch in right field off Rodón in the fifth. Padres believe all their close wins have helped prepare them for 1st matchups with Dodgers this year
MILWAUKEE — The San Diego Padres are about to face the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time since their memorable NL Division Series matchup. They believe all the close games they've played lately prepared them for this test. San Diego's last seven games have been decided by a total of eight runs, a stretch that continued Sunday when Manny Machado's seventh-inning homer gave the Padres a 1-0 win and series victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. 'We know who we're going to run up against, and we definitely got ready for it this week,' Machado said. This run of close games actually started earlier than that. Thirteen of San Diego's last 14 games featured a margin of no more than two runs, and the Padres have gone 9-5 during that stretch. 'These are kind of the games we've been playing the last 2½ weeks here now,' infielder Jake Cronenworth said. 'They're just kind of become the norm for us. I think (if) you can win these one-run games and win them late – good pitching, good defense and timely hitting – that's kind of the recipe for success.' Now they finally get to measure themselves against the Dodgers in seven of their next 10 games. The Padres and Dodgers begin a three-game series Monday at San Diego before meeting again in Los Angeles for a four-game set starting June 16. The Padres and San Francisco Giants are a game behind the Dodgers in the NL West standings after all three teams won Sunday. 'It's crazy that we haven't faced them,' reliever Jason Adam said. The Padres have needed that stellar pitching because their lineup has struggled at times. Machado has gone 12 of 31 this month and has three homers in his last four games, but two-time All-Star Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting .185 since the start of May. That combination of impressive pitching and inconsistent hitting is producing plenty of close games, and the Padres are winning most of them. They're hoping that provides a long-term payoff. 'I think it's not only a help for (preparing for) the Dodgers,' Adam said. 'It's a help for all the future. It's a help for the playoffs. Very rarely are you blowing out a team in the playoffs. Red Sox pound Yankees with 5 home runs to win series in New York
NEW YORK — After a walk-off win last Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox had a big, three-game trip looming to face the New York Yankees in the Bronx. 'They're all big (wins),' manager Alex Cora said last week. 'But it starts in New York. We've just got to go over there and win the series.' The way the Red Sox have played this season, one step forward and two steps back on repeat, Cora's words seemed like another pie-in-the-sky optimistic proclamation, something a manager says because he has to. Advertisement But Sunday night, his words became reality as the Red Sox took two of three from New York, trouncing the Yankees 11-7 in the finale on the strength of five home runs and a solid performance from their rookie starter. It marked just the fifth time in a regular-season road game against the Yankees that Boston homered five or more times, but their first since 2010. 'Overall, a good weekend,' Cora said. 'Some kids played in this environment for the first time, and they played loose. They did a good job. And now we just got to be ready for tomorrow.' Even in their loss Friday, when Walker Buehler was pounded for seven runs (five earned) in two innings of work, the Red Sox offense made a game of it before losing 9-6. Saturday, Garrett Crochet wasn't his best but still kept New York in check as Boston's lineup showed up again, posting 10 runs in a win. Sunday, the Red Sox were determined not to waste the weekend. New York pulled within 7-5 on a sacrifice fly off Brennan Bernardino and a bases-loaded walk from Garrett Whitlock, but Whitlock got a groundout to end the threat in the sixth. Toro and Story padded the lead in the eighth. The Red Sox have not made it easy on themselves this season and still sit at 32-35 in early June. But if they can continue to pile up more wins like they did this weekend, they'll be headed in the right direction. After three games against the Tampa Bay Rays at home this week, the Red Sox have a rematch at Fenway Park next weekend against the Yankees. Cora has seen his team's momentum wiped out all too often and didn't want to get ahead of himself with the series win this weekend. 'Let's see how we react tomorrow,' he said.
