Mark Chapman's joke about Gary Lineker, football team he supports, BBC Match of the Day pay
Mark Chapman will host the first Match of the Day show of the new Premier League season. The 51-year-old will share hosting duties with Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates this campaign after Gary Lineker's exit.
The BBC flagship will have a new permanent host for the first time since 1999 this term after former England striker Lineker stepped down, ceasing all involvement with the organisation from the end of last season after sparking an antisemitism row with a social media post.
Lineker's exit was announced in November last year, and it was confirmed in January that ex-MOTD 2 host Chapman, renowned presenter Logan and former Sky Sports star Cates would rotate to fill his shoes. Chapman will take the reins on Saturday, and Mirror Football takes a look at his life away from the screen, including where his footballing loyalties lie and how much he earns.
Mark Chapman's Gary Lineker joke
Although Saturday will be Chapman's first show as permanent host, as per PA, with colleague Logan taking on the Sunday rendition, he is no stranger to fronting MOTD.
Chapman's role with MOTD 2 often saw him host the midweek editions of the show, and an appearance in January saw him crack a joke amid the announcement of Lineker's exit.
The 51-year-old opened the broadcast alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer with a witty allusion to his upcoming role, declaring: "Evening, thought I'd get the practice in…"
His co-stars couldn't help but chuckle at the admission, with Shearer exclaiming: "You haven't wasted any time, have you? Six months too early!" Chapman retorted: "It's going to be a long night, eh?"
What football club does Mark Chapman support?
Former host Lineker did not hide his love for boyhood side Leicester City, for whom he began his footballing career. He played over 200 times for the Foxes from 1978 until 1985.
Chapman, who is not an ex-pro, having started life with the BBC in 1996 as a community announcer, also has an affinity for a top English side in Manchester United.
Born in Rochdale, Chapman told the iPaper in 2018: "It's not my fault that I support a big team! I had to put up with a lot of poor, if at least entertaining, stuff in the 1980s. I am a genuine Manchester United fan."
After the Red Devils endured a difficult 15th-placed Premier League finish last season, with some dismal results, Chapman explained on a 2025 appearance on the game show Catchphrase: "By the time we go on air, I've had enough time to stop being a sore loser. So by then I'm fairly impartial."
How much does Mark Chapman earn?
Lineker was renowned for being one of the BBC's highest-paid staff members during his time with the organisation. It was reported that he took home roughly £1.75million last year before stepping down.
Colleague Shearer was also a top earner last year with a reported salary of £440,000, though Chapman earns considerably less than the two former England strikers.
Over the course of the 2021/22 season, Chapman earned roughly £250k, and his salary was boosted the following term to around £325k.
During the 2023/24 season, Chapman took home somewhere in the region of £260k for his coverage on Radio 5 Live, MOTD 2, the Challenge Cup, the Euros and Olympic Games.

Mikel Arteta gives his verdict on what Arsenal were 'missing' last season and admits this title race is his 'toughest EVER' - as he opens up on the phone call that sealed Viktor Gyokeres' move
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has revealed what he believes his team were missing in their quest to win the Premier League title last season. The Gunners finished in second place for the third consecutive campaign as they ended up ten points behind champions Liverpool. Arteta believes that the lengthy absences of key players proved costly for his team last season. A host of important Arsenal stars spent time on the sidelines last season, including Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Ben White, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Magalhaes. Arteta told Men In Blazers: 'A lot of things have to go right to finish second in the Premier League and to do the amount of points that we have done more than any other club in three seasons in the Premier League. So a lot of top things you have to do. 'But what we missed, in my opinion, was that we missed some top, top players. Players that have to be on the pitch impacting results for four or five months we miss them and it was no one, it was four or five of them, and that's where we came short in my opinion. But even though we did it, I think we did it in a way that I think we have to be, really privileged.' The Arsenal manager also admitted that the title race this season could be the toughest ever. He said: 'First of all, you have to believe in it and really genuinely believe in it. And when when we talk about it and say, okay, we need to describe so how good we are in a lot of things that we do, and then they realise it. 'But they're also convinced that we know that is a really tough season coming up, probably the toughest ever because of the quality of every team, the way everybody has reinforced their squad. But at the same time it is probably the most exciting one as well. Arteta will hope for better luck for his players on the injury front this season and he will also be looking for Viktor Gyokeres to make a major impact. There is much expectation on Gyokeres following his arrival from Sporting but Arteta believes that the striker will thrive for Arsenal. Arteta said: 'He's going to bring a different level of threat. I've never been stopping to have a 9 like this, never. 'The thing is we have adapted to the players and trying to get the best out of the players that we have, and now we have someone with a unique ability to put the ball in the back of the net. He's done more often than anybody else almost in Europe. That's a big quality to have in the team.' Arteta disclosed that his first phone call with Gyokeres convinced him that the Sweden international was the right option. Asked what data convinced him that Gyokeres will be a success, Arteta said: 'The data was my first phone call with him. I told him the idea that I had and I wanted to just look at his reaction, like coming to Arsenal, imagine yourself putting that shirt on, walking into the dressing room with the expectations around you, how do you handle it?. Much to Arteta's delight, Gyokeres responded by saying: 'That's my dream'. Arteta continued: 'You can have all the data but this guy has to come and adapt to this pressure in this league. The other data I knew. It's how this guy's going to behave when he comes on that pitch with that security, that dominance and that arrogance almost to say, don't worry I will do it.' As well as Gyokeres, Arsenal have also signed Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera and Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Gunners get their Premier League campaign underway on Sunday when they face Manchester United away.

New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death
New Match of the Day host Mark Chapman finds love again after wife's death The BBC presenter is in the Match of the Day hotseat as the iconic highlights show enters a new era Chapman will host the first Match of the Day of the new season It's the start of a new Premier League season, and the beginning of a new era for Match of the Day, with long-time host Gary Lineker no longer in the presenter's chair. The former England striker hosted the iconic highlights show for 26 years, but announced last year that he would be stepping away from the role at the end of the 2024/25 season. He had been scheduled to continue presenting the BBC's live FA Cup broadcasts, and front coverage of next year's FIFA World Cup, but he has now left the broadcaster for good after sparking outrage. Lineker came under fire after sharing a social media post on Zionism which featured a rat, which has historically been used as an anti-semitic insult in reference to language used by Nazi Germany towards Jewish people. While he removed the post and issued a public apology, it was later confirmed that he would leave the BBC early, signing off from the corporation on the final day of last season. When his departure was first announced, it was confirmed that a three-presenter team of Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates would take up hosting duties, and it is Chapman that is set to kick off proceedings on the first day of the 2025/26 campaign. The 51-year-old has become one of the most recognisable and well-liked faces in sports broadcasting over the years, having also fronted coverage of rugby league, the NFL and the Olympics alongside a host of football tournaments. But while Chapman is at the top of his game, his professional achievements have come against the backdrop of a brutally difficult period in his personal life, with the presenter tragically losing his wife Sara to cancer five years ago. Article continues below The couple got married in 2001 and went on to have three children together, with Sara fighting the disease for many years before sadly passing away in June 2020 at the age of just 44. At the time, a source told The Sun: 'Sadly Sara passed away on June 3. Mark and the kids are absolutely devastated. "The family was there and it's just a really sad situation. They're an extremely private family and would appreciate people respecting that.' Mark Chapman's wife Sara (pictured) died aged 44 (Image: Twitter) While he and his family were understandably left heartbroken by the loss, however, Chapman has now found love again, with it revealed last year that he had started a relationship with estate agent Clere Collier. Ms Collier, who is believed to be seven years younger than the presenter, has paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as her "one love". On Chapman's birthday last year, the estate agent - who is based in Dubai but reportedly makes regular trips over to the UK - shared a photo of the BBC star, writing: "Happy birthday to this one. My one love. "So proud of all you do, the biggest heart, the kindest soul, the leader of our pack and not to mention devilishly handsome. I love you, happy 51." The Sun reports that Chapman's new partner previously worked at an agency in Hampstead in north London and was known as a "socialite", with her celebrity friends including actors, singers and radio DJ Chris Moyles. Article continues below The publication adds that she previously been married twice before and has two children from those relationships, while she previously dated Another Level boyband star Dane Bowers.

Newcastle miss killer instinct of Alexander Isak in draw at 10-man Aston Villa
Isak was left out by boss Eddie Howe as the Sweden international tries to force a move away from St James' Park this summer. But the Magpies could have done with their star man as they failed to find a way past Villa, who had Ezri Konsa sent off in the 66th minute. A point on the road in our opening game of the season 🤝 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) August 16, 2025 Howe's side, who missed clear-cut chances in the first half, huffed and puffed against 10 men but never really looked like winning it. The draw between two sides who look set to compete for a place in the top six this season was a better result for Villa, who will now remain unbeaten in the league at home for over a calendar year. Newcastle actually looked strong going forward early on and fashioned three good opportunities in the opening 15 minutes. Anthony Elanga has been the marquee signing of the summer so far, joining from Nottingham Forest for £55million, and he had an ideal opportunity to make his mark in just the third minute as he raced clear but shot straight at Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot. Anthony Gordon, leading the line in a central position, could have done better with a header from Harvey Barnes' cross before forcing Bizot, playing instead of the suspended Emiliano Martinez, into a low save. Villa, who have had their hands tied in the transfer market because of financial rules, failed to muster a shot in the first half as they struggled for any rhythm. But they improved after the break and could have gone ahead in the 47th minute, but Boubacar Kamara's header from John McGinn's cross went straight at Nick Pope. As the game endured a lull in action, both sets of fans came together in protest at the Premier League's financial rules, which have restricted the two clubs' spending over the last couple of seasons. Attention returned to the action on the pitch when Villa were reduced to 10 men in the 66th minute. After Ollie Watkins' snapshot was saved by Pope, Newcastle launched a counter-attack which saw Elanga play in Gordon, who was hauled down by Konsa. Referee Craig Pawson had no hesitation in brandishing the red card and the dynamic of the game changed. Newcastle now had the momentum, but they were not exactly knocking down the door as Villa's organised defence held firm and battled bravely. Indeed, Bizot only had one save to make, easily dealing with Gordon's shot from distance as Newcastle missed the killer instinct of their talismanic striker. And the away fans made their feelings about Isak's stance clear at the end of the match as they chanted 'there's only one greedy b******'.
