Patna: An intensive ticket-checking drive conducted across the Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) in June has begun to show results, leading to a 25% surge in ticket sales through the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) in the month.
According to Danapur divisional railway manager (DRM) Jayant Kumar Choudhary, the intensified ticket-checking drive conducted during June led to the penalisation of 51,644 passengers who were found travelling without valid tickets. The crackdown resulted in the collection of fines amounting to Rs 3.50 lakh, he said.
"The objective behind the drive was not just to penalise offenders, but to instil a sense of responsibility among daily commuters and casual passengers.
This has evidently led to an increase in the number of passengers purchasing proper tickets before boarding either long-distance or short-distance passenger trains in the division," the DRM said.
Danapur senior divisional commercial manager (Senior DCM), Abhinav Siddarth, said on Monday the railways has already introduced the UTS mobile app and automatic ticket vending machines (ATVM) across major stations of the division to reduce congestion at general ticket booking counters. These digital facilities allow passengers to conveniently purchase unreserved tickets without standing in long queues, he said.
Similar inspection drives will continue in the future, he said.

Court issues arrest warrant against two accused of job fraud

Bhopal/Jabalpur: A Jabalpur court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) has issued an arrest warrant against a Central Ordnance Depot employee and another person for cheating the plaintiff in the name of providing a govt job to his son. The complaint filed by Rambharose Chouksey, a retired employee from an Army workshop, said that he knew the accused, PL Chaudhary. Chaudhary assured him of getting a job for his son Deepak in railways for Rs 4 lakh. Later, he offered to get him a job in BHEL for Rs 10 lakh on the pretext that recruitment in the railways was stayed by the court. He also introduced him to Ritesh Gupta, who claimed to be the nephew of former home minister Umashankar Gupta. Trusting the two, Chouksey gave them Rs 9 lakh. Chaudhary gave him a cheque of Rs 3.5 lakh as a guarantee and also handed over a 'fake' appointment letter and other documents for his son. When it was revealed to him that he was cheated, Chouksey sought to lodge an FIR with the police, but the police said that there were complaints of fraud against them already and didn't proceed with any action, thereby making him move to the court with his complaint. Hearing the case, the court of JMFC Jagmohan Singh ordered the police to register a case of fraud against the two accused and also issued an arrest warrant against them for their presence in court on the next hearing on Aug 20.

UP woman gets 7.5-year jail term for filing falsegangrape case under SC/ST Act to settle scores

Lucknow: In a rare judgment, a special court in Lucknow on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old woman to 7.5-year imprisonment for filing a false gangrape and SC/ST atrocity case against two men to allegedly settle a personal score. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Convicting the woman on Monday, special judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, presiding over the SC/ST court in Lucknow, called it a deliberate misuse of protective legislation. "The court awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2 lakh under section 211 of the IPC (falsely accusing someone of a serious offence). Failure to pay this fine will result in nine more months of imprisonment. Six months of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1,000 under section 182 of the IPC (providing false information to public servants). In case of non-payment of the fine, she will have to undergo an additional seven days of imprisonment," said DGC, criminal, Manoj Tripathi. The court directed that the sentences would run consecutively, amounting to a total imprisonment of seven years and six months and a combined fine of Rs 2.01 lakh. Additionally, the court ordered that Rs 1,00,500 — half of the total fine amount — be distributed as compensation between the two falsely accused individuals. Rajesh Dev, who was jailed based on the fabricated complaint, and the legal heir of Bhupendra Kumar alias BK, who died during the trial, will each receive Rs 50,250 for their wrongful incarceration. The woman, a resident of Devkali village in Barabanki, initially lodged an FIR on June 29, 2021, at Zaidpur police station, accusing two men — Rajesh, son of Pehalwan, and an unidentified friend from Marocha village — of gangraping her and threatening her life. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She also invoked the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, claiming caste-based harassment. Due to jurisdictional issues, the case was transferred on May 9, 2022, to BKT police station in Lucknow, where it was re-registered as FIR no. 157/2022 under sections 376D, 506 of the IPC and section 3(2)(5A) of the SC/ST Act. Judge Tripathi said that during the investigation, multiple inconsistencies emerged in the complainant's statements. "The final probe, conducted by then circle officer of BKT, Naveena Shukla, found no evidence to support her allegations. Forensic reports, site inspection and witness testimonies all contradicted her claims. A final closure report was submitted on Sept 7, 2022, concluding that no such incident occurred," said Tripathi. Police later revealed that she was previously in a consensual relationship with one of the accused and filed the case allegedly out of spite after their fallout. Following this revelation, she was booked under section 182 (false information) and section 211 (false charge of serious offence) of the Indian Penal Code. Citing the judgment, Tripathi said that the court called it a case of deliberate misuse of protective legislation. The judge issued strong directives to prevent further abuse of the SC/ST Act. The commissioner of police, Lucknow, was instructed to include in all future FIRs under sections 376/376D IPC and SC/ST Act, a history of prior similar complaints filed by the victim or their family. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools was recommended to maintain records of repetitive FIRs or complaints submitted at police stations or online portals. The court emphasised that financial compensation under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules, 1995 must be released only after a chargesheet is filed, not merely after FIR registration. This move is aimed at stopping the misuse of taxpayer money in false cases. The court also instructed district magistrates of Lucknow and Barabanki to recover any compensation that may have already been disbursed to the complainant in the case, said Tripathi.

Patto land fraud: Court tells CBI to file FIR in 24 hours

Panaji: A North Goa court has directed CBI to register an FIR within 24 hours following allegations of fraud by various central govt agencies and Goa govt in land allotment at EDC Patto . Activists had moved the court alleging that govt property was allotted to EDC to house certain offices, but they were allegedly leased and sold land without obtaining permission from govt causing loss of Rs 300 crore to state exchequer. Even if permission was obtained, they ought to have deposited 50% of the amount with the govt or the EDC which has not been done, the activists alleged. 'In the present case FIR ought to have been registered. There is nothing exceptional in the present case that warrants a delay in the registration of an FIR on the ground of preliminary inquiry. Even if there were exceptional circumstances, any preliminary inquiry could not have under any circumstances exceeded two days,' sessions judge Irshad Agha said.'In the present case FIR ought to have been registered by the investigating agency. In any case, a preliminary inquiry ought to have been carried out. However, in the present case there is enough material to directly register the FIR,' the judge said.
