Could the Vikings add a notable cornerback to the roster before training camp?
The Minnesota Vikings showed last year how vital their secondary is to their defensive success, especially how Brian Flores uses and schemes with each piece on that side of the ball.
The team brings back ball-hawking cornerback Byron Murphy Jr., but they added veterans in free agency, as well. They signed Isaiah Rodgers, as well as former top pick Jeff Okudah. While they are not household names, they are names that can produce results. Depending on who you ask, though, the Vikings could even ask for more help in their secondary as they head towards training camp.
The Athletic's Alec Lewis spoke on the Purple Insider podcast and was asked about the idea of the team adding a cornerback like Jalen Ramsey or Jaire Alexander. His answer may not have the spark that Vikings fans will like but it could be what they need.
"I do strongly think they need another CB for depth... from a fit/locker room all that stuff, I'm not fully bought in there (the Vikings would be interested in Jalen Ramsey)... A player (on a 1-year deal like Jaire Alexander is) probably more of where I have my mind focused on."
Jaire Alexander was a former All-Pro, just as Ramsey was, but the cost will be significantly less. That will be enough to make the difference in who Kwesi Adofo-Mensah should pursue.

The next star prospect Phillies must call up in 2025 MLB season

The post The next star prospect Phillies must call up in 2025 MLB season appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Philadelphia Phillies are currently in second place in the National League East with a 37-28 record. Philadelphia trails the 42-24 New York Mets in the division by 4.5 games as of this story's writing. Would promoting a top prospect to the big league level give the Phillies a significant boost as they hope to surpass the Mets? Advertisement Andrew Painter is the Phillies' No. 1 overall prospect and MLB's No. 6 overall prospect. The 22-year-old was a candidate to join the Phillies' rotation a couple of years ago but ended up suffering an elbow injury and ultimately underwent Tommy John surgery. However, the 6'7″ right-handed pitcher is back on the mound after missing 2023 and 2024 due to the injury/surgery. Rumors have swirled about a potential Painter promotion over the past couple of months. It seems as if Painter could realistically earn the promotion soon. 'Andrew Painter's progressions will become even more important as the Phillies continue to exhaust internal options before the July 31 trade deadline,' Matt Gelb of The Athletic wrote in a recent article. 'Painter is expected to pitch twice this week at Triple-A Lehigh Valley — Tuesday and Sunday — meaning he will go on four days' rest for the first time in his professional career. That is one of the final boxes the Phillies wanted the 22-year-old righty to check before coming to the majors.' Is now the right time to promote Painter? He's certainly dealt with injury trouble in the past, and Painter is only 22 years old. There is an argument to be made for Painter staying in the minor leagues for now. Advertisement However, today we will argue against that narrative. It is unquestionably time for the Phillies to call Andrew Painter up to the MLB team. It's Andrew Painter time in Philadelphia The Phillies have been close to making a World Series run over the past few years. Philadelphia is looking to win its first Fall Classic since 2008. The 2025 team looks like it has a tremendous opportunity to get the job done. Yet, the Phillies haven't even been the best team in their division. That could change with the Painter promotion. Zack Wheeler is an ace and he will continue to lead the pitching staff. Cristopher Sanchez has pitched well for the most part. Ranger Suarez has been reliable in his seven starts. Young right-handed hurler Mick Abel has impressed across two outings. Aaron Nola, meanwhile, is currently injured. Advertisement Adding Painter to the rotation would instantly give Philadelphia a massive boost. Even once Nola returns, Painter could make an impact. Painter has appeared in a total of nine games so far in the minor leagues in 2025. Five have come at the Triple-A level while the other four outings were made in Single-A. Overall, he's pitched to a 3.90 ERA while striking out 37 hitters across 32.1 innings of work. The hard-throwing 22-year-old features impressive strikeout prowess. He is still developing overall command of his pitches, but Painter has only walked 12 hitters this season. It has become clear that he's ready for the next step. Phillies' rotation outlook Nola's injury return date remains uncertain. Once he returns, the Phillies could consider optioning Abel to the minor leagues or moving Luzardo to the bullpen. Of course, a trade could come to fruition as well with the deadline in July coming up soon. Advertisement The Phillies must do whatever it takes to ensure there will be an open spot in the rotation for Painter. He truly could make the difference between another playoff failure and a World Series championship. Painter features that kind of ceiling. And throwing him in a rotation that already features a star such as Zack Wheeler would give Philadelphia one of the better pitching staffs in the sport. As mentioned before, it's Andrew Painter time in Philadelphia. Vikings CB Isaiah Rodgers embracing fresh start and preparing for bigger role in Minnesota

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Isaiah Rodgers missed the 2023 NFL season because of a gambling suspension. Last season, he won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, Minnesota's newest cornerback is getting ready for a bigger role. "Just enjoy the process while it's here," said Rodgers at mini-camp earlier this week. "Do whatever I can do to help the team win and bring a Lombardi to Minnesota." Rodgers may not have made as many national headlines when he signed with the Vikings this offseason. But if all goes according to plan, he'll be a starting cornerback and make a big impact this fall. At least that's what Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores wants. "He just wants me to be me," said Rodgers, of Flores. "That's one of the reasons why I came here. He just wants me to go out there and use my ball skills and use my knowledge to make plays." Rodgers, 27, will be paired with pro-bowler Byron Murphy. It's only been a few weeks, but the two corners have quickly become friends. "We play the game a lot," said Rodgers. "We ask each other about film. You know, how he sees this, how I see it. We switch from boundary to field. So we're just having fun with the scheme and figuring each other out." "I'd say that's my best friend already," said Murphy. "That's my dawg. Obviously just met him when he got here. But we're already playing games online, we got 2K, all those things. He's a great guy, great teammate. But that bond's already there." And it turns out that bond and their back-and-forth competition could result in a few more Vikings turnovers. Murphy had six interceptions last year, third best in the NFL. "A lot of plays on the ball. A lot of interceptions. He dropped a lot, though, "laughed Rodgers. "He's supposed to have at least 10-plus. So, just trying to get in that stat category with him and compete." "I dropped like five or six," smiled Murphy. "I don't know the exact number, but I gotta go make up for it this year for sure." Rodgers figures to factor in the return game, too. He has one career kickoff return for a touchdown so far, which happened in 2020. Along with many other Vikings, he took reps at that spot during OTAs and minicamp. WCCO asked Rodgers if he sees that being part of his job this season. "Anything to help the team. Just having fun out here. Enjoying the process too."

Brian Flores reflects on NFL head coaching courtship, remains 'happy' running Vikings' defense

The Minnesota Vikings held a mandatory minicamp this week, and Brian Flores stood close by as Vikings defensive players participated in drills. Earlier this year, it wasn't clear Flores would be wearing a Vikings cap when the team's offseason program kicked off. The former Miami Dolphins head coach drew interest from multiple NFL teams that had head coaching openings during the latest hiring cycle. The Chicago Bears and the New York Jets were among teams that confirmed they met with Flores for an interview in January. Flores did not land another head coaching opportunity and returned for his third season as the Vikings' defensive coordinator. Flores had success in his first couple of seasons with the Vikings, and his innovative schemes were widely credited for the franchise's defensive turnaround. Although the regular season is still months away, Flores' creativity and aggressive style of play-calling was already on display at minicamp. During full team drills Thursday, an unexpected pre-snap alignment by the defense prompted new center Ryan Kelly to ask Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell about the call he should make for blocking that play. "Your guess is as good as mine," O'Connell told Kelly, he later recounted to reporters. "I've got no idea what they're doing over there." "It must've been pretty close to the end of the offseason program because today he ran some stuff that I didn't even know was in there," O'Connell added. "That's Flo. I challenge him all the time to do those things." Although he won't enter the 2025 NFL season as a head coach, Flores expressed appreciation for the opportunity to go through the interview process. He added he was "happy" to be returning to Minnesota. "Being able to sit in that interview setting and have a conversation for that role is obviously an honor, and those jobs went to guys who were certainly deserved," Flores said. "It was a great experience, and I enjoyed it. I'm also very happy to be right where I am." The Dolphins parted ways with Flores after the 2021 season. He filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the league shortly after losing his head coaching job. The lawsuit is still pending. The Vikings ranked fifth in the league in scoring defense last season after finishing 14th the year before. They were 28th in 2022 before Flores arrived. Spending in free agency helped enhance the depth chart, but Flores has also helped turn unheralded players such as safety Josh Metellus and linebacker Ivan Pace into key contributors. Last season, the Vikings tied for the league lead with 33 takeaways, leading to a steady stream of on-field celebrations. "My joy comes from watching them have excitement," Flores said.
