Student's suicide in Rourkela takes new turn as dad accuses school of torture
After returning from school on June 4, Tanmay Mahawar (15) had hanged himself to death from the ceiling fan at his residence in Daily Market area within Plant Site police limits.
Attributing his son's death to the harassment by the school principal and others over an old issue, Tanmay's father Pappu Mahawar on Friday evening filed a complaint in the local police station.
Pappu said the school administration had lodged a complaint against his son with Sector-19 police. He was summoned by police on May 2 and informed that Tanmay in January had uploaded a cartoon reel (video) of the principal and teachers on Instagram. Tanmay was counselled by police and he as a parent tendered a written apology following which the issue was settled amicably in presence of the school principal.
The aggrieved father said the school reopened on June 2 and everything went fine for two days. On June 4, Tanmay returned from school stressed and a few hours later, he died by suicide in his room.
'Before going to his room, Tanmay told me that the principal had asked him to bring his father to the school the next day. Despite all persuasion, my son did not disclose what went wrong in the school. It was his last conversation,' said Pappu.
Elder brother Rahul said in a social media chat, Tanmay had told one of his friends that he was stressed due to the school administration's attitude towards him and he feared he might be expelled.

AGTF detains 6 for grenade attack in Punjab
1 2 Jaipur: The Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Rajasthan Police Monday said it detained six persons including three minors for their alleged role in a grenade attack in Punjab last month and for conspiring to carry out blasts in Punjab, Delhi, and Madhya Pradesh ahead of Independence Day. The suspects were reportedly in contact with Akhtar through Instagram and other online platforms and were told to plan additional grenade attacks in Delhi and Gwalior around Aug 15. Police said the detentions averted potential large-scale violence, and efforts are on to trace the explosives' supply chain and identify other members. "After the interrogation, the suspects will be handed over to the Punjab Police where there is an FIR filed against them in the grenade attack case," said an official. Gurugram: Married man caught masturbating to woman in public nabbed
Agency: Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 00:00 IST Representational image (Image: News18) Gurugram, Aug 11 (PTI) A 32-year-old assistant manager was arrested for allegedly masturbating to a woman waiting for a cab at Rajiv Chowk on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, police on Monday said. According to police, Abhilash Kumar is an MTech and works with a private company with an annual package of Rs 14 lakh. The incident happened on August 2, when the woman, who turned out to be an Instagram influencer, was waiting for a cab at Rajiv Chowk after getting off a bus coming from Jaipur. The woman allegedly found the man masturbating while standing in public, made a video of the act, and shared it on social media. After a complaint, police filed a case under sections 75 (2) (sexual harassment), 78 (stalking) of the BNS at the Civil Lines Police Station. Footage from hundreds of CCTV cameras was scoured, and Kumar was arrested, police said. He will be produced in a city court tomorrow. JU to get 70 more CCTV cameras
Kolkata: Jadavpur University will install 70 more CCTV cameras at 50 spots to secure the university's main and Salt Lake campuses, at an estimated cost of Rs 68 lakh. JU will also recruit 30 additional security personnel and two security supervisors. These decisions were taken at the executive council (EC) meeting on Monday. The Calcutta HC in June authorised the pro-VC to convene the meeting to discuss security-related matters in the absence of a VC. The court also asked the varsity to approach the higher education department for further release of funds for CCTV installation and other security measures. Sources said Webel Technology Ltd, a state govt undertaking, has provided the estimate.
