Italians aren't as obese as Americans, surprising reason has little to do with food

Time of Indiaa day ago
After American columnist Tamar Haspel spent the entire month of May eating her way across Italy, she returned with finding out why there are tales of people who lose weight while vacationing in Italy and the country's relatively low obesity rate compared to the United States, as per a report.
Hint: It's Not What They Eat, It's How They Eat
From cookies for breakfast to multicourse lunches and dinners, with pasta, risotto, cheese, cured meats, and, of course, gelato, Italians don't exactly eat 'light,' according to the coloum written by Haspel in The Washington Post. In fact, they consume more pasta per person than anyone on Earth, averaging over 51 pounds a year, while Americans eat just 19. But they still manage to avoid the obesity crisis plaguing the United States. As per data from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, the obesity rate among Italian adults was 17% in 2022, and it was 42% in the United States, as per the report.
The reason for their lower obesity rate doesn't lie in their menu, but it lies in how they eat and how much, according to her column.

Smaller Portions, Fewer Snacks
Nutrition expert Marion Nestle has long said that American portion sizes could single-handedly explain the nation's weight gain, according to The Washington Post column. When portions double, people eat roughly a third more, without even realising it, as per the report. In Italy, even decadent meals are typically served in smaller portions, and when it's done, it's done, as snacking is also far less frequent, according to the report.
Live Events
Italians typically don't graze all day or grab food on the go, and between-meal eating is rare, especially outside the home, as per Haspel's experience in Italy. It's not just a habit, it's part of the food culture, according to the report. Many towns and cities do not have the kind of convenience-food bombardment Americans are used to: no smoothie counters at pharmacies, no giant cookies at hardware stores, no drive-thru pretzels or novelty sodas around every corner, as per her column.

A Different Food Culture
According to the report, outdoor markets offer fresh produce, bread, cheese, and meat, but no funnel cakes, no churros, no hot dogs, as Italians eat less processed food than Americans do, and they also eat less of it than almost anyone in Europe.
Haspel even recommends, "If you ever wonder why Americans are fat and Italians aren't, spend a month in their shoes. Sure, there are differences in what we eat. But the bigger differences are in where, when, how and how much," as per The Washington Post.

FAQs
How is Italian food culture different from American food culture?
In Italy, food is something to be enjoyed slowly and socially. Meals are often intentional and structured—there's little mindless snacking or eating on the go.
Are
portion sizes in Italy
really that different?
Yes, they're noticeably smaller. Even indulgent foods like pasta or gelato come in reasonable amounts. Overeating just isn't built into the experience.

Visiting US parks just got pricier — for foreign tourists, thanks to Trump's new order

Are you planning a trip to America's national parks? If you are not a US resident, expect to pay more. President Donald Trump's new executive order aims to increase entrance fees for international visitors. He has issued an executive order on Thursday directing the Interior Department to raise entrance and recreation fees for foreign tourists visiting US national parks. The move, which is expected to generate more than $90 million per year, will also give priority to US residents when applying for permits. Critics claim the move undermines inclusivity and conservation efforts. For any national park that presently charges admission, it directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who is in charge of the National Park Service, to "develop a strategy" to increase entrance costs and recreation pass prices for visitors who are not U.S. citizens. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 15 Prettiest Icons In The History The Noodle Box Read More Undo How much more will foreign tourists pay? According to the Interior Department's May fiscal year budget proposal, such a surcharge would bring in over $90 million a year. Live Events Not all national parks have entry fees, and those that do have different prices. Typically, guests can buy an annual pass that can be used at one park or in a particular area of the nation, or they can buy a regular daily or weekly pass to one particular park. A more extensive "America the Beautiful" pass, available at all national parks across the country for $80, is also provided by the Park Service. Entrance fees to some of the most visited locations in the National Park Service, such as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone, are $20 per person or $35 per car. Will Americans get park access priority? The Interior Department was also directed by President Trump to give U.S. citizens "preferential treatment" over foreign tourists with regard to "recreational access rules, including permitting or lottery rules" that may be in effect at parks. Americans do get priority access to park permits and recreation with this new order. While some well-known national parks have reservation systems for access and camping during high seasons, the ruling did not specify what those preferential treatment standards would entail. The president also created the "Make America Beautiful Again" Commission in a separate executive order, whose duties include encouraging voluntary conservation activities and increasing recreational access to public lands and rivers. A memorandum signed in January 2017, at the end of former President Barack Obama's second term, that aimed to advance diversity and inclusion at national parks was also repealed by the order Thursday. The action seems to be a part of the Trump administration's continued attempt to reduce federal diversity initiatives. The Interior Department also suggested reducing funding for the Park Service by about $1 billion in its fiscal year budget for 2026, the worst budget drop in the agency's history. The most recent actions follow efforts by the Trump administration to cut the number of employees at the National Park Service. About 1,000 Park Service workers were let go by the administration in February as part of its efforts to implement significant budget and staff cuts throughout the federal government. Since President Trump took office in January, the Park Service has lost 24 percent of its permanent employees, according to a report this week from the National Parks Conservation Association. FAQs Are U.S. park fees increasing for everyone? No, only for foreign visitors. US residents will continue to pay standard rates, while international tourists may face new surcharges. Will Americans have improved access to reservations now? Possible. The order prioritizes US residents for permits and lotteries at parks with limited access systems.
