R216 million pothole repair programme rolled out in KZN
PSA commends KwaZulu-Natal's efforts to combat potholes.

The Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) has applauded the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport's plan to address the province's 3.12 million pothole backlog.
The KwaZulu-Natal Premier, the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, and the mayor of uMgungundlovu District Municipality launched the scheme in Pietermaritzburg with a budget of R216 million.
"Fifty-five trucks have been deployed to do the work. The Department has also appointed more than 100 roadworker aids and supervisors to be on the frontline in the battle against potholes in KwaZulu-Natal.
Potholes are a common hazard on roadways and can be caused by a variety of circumstances. These include water infiltration, which occurs when water seeps into the soil beneath the road surface due to a lack of drainage systems, causing the road to fracture.
"We want to tackle the backlog of 3.12 million m² of potholes across the province. We intend to procure numerous trucks to reinforce our efforts to eradicate potholes on our network," said MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma.
Extreme weather conditions, such as high temperatures produced by climate change, can cause roadways to expand and become damaged. Heavy trucks and frequent traffic utilise routes designed for tiny cars, causing damage to the road.
A lack of maintenance and construction businesses that are given bids to build roads using inexpensive materials leads roads to degrade faster, resulting in potholes.

Stellantis names Antonio Filosa as its new CEO: source
Carmaker Stellantis has appointed Italian Antonio Filosa as its new CEO, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday. He succeeds Carlos Tavares, who quit the group in December after a sharp drop in profits and sales, specially in the US, raised questions about his management. Since then, the Franco-Italian-US carmaker has been provisionally led by its chair John Elkann, a scion of the Agnelli family that founded Fiat, now part of Stellantis. The Agnellis are Stellantis' single largest investor through their family holding company Exor. The group's other brands include Peugeot and Jeep. Filosa is expected to focus on the challenging task to revive fortunes after the carmaker suffered a 70% drop in net profit and a €6bn (R137,469,892,500) cash burn in 2024. Having exceeded €27 (R549) early last year, Stellantis shares shed more than two thirds of their value in the next 12 months. The new boss will also need to rein in Stellantis sprawling 14-brand portfolio, with analysts and experts thinking the carmaker should terminate or sell some of them, and complete a process to restore the group's fraught relations with dealers, unions and governments left by Tavares. Stellantis was created in early 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot's owner PSA, with Tavares, the former PSA head, as its first CEO. Filosa, aged 51, has been leading Stellantis in its key North American market since October with a task of reviving sales at the group's powerhouse, after its market share shrank in recent years.

KZN Transport MEC confirms eight fatalities in Mother's Day crash involving church group
KZN Department of Transport MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, has clarified that eight members from the Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion died in a tragic accident on the Empangeni N2. The Department initially reported that nine people had lost their lives. The accident took place on Mother's Day and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-100 bakkie. The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba. Duma said that he is in contact with the church and family members of the victims, largely mothers, of yesterday morning's car accident. "From the initial nine fatalities reported yesterday, we wish to confirm that only eight church members of Umkhumbi Wesethembiso Church in Zion, headquartered in Hluhluwe, died in that horrific accident that left the whole country in shock. "Unfortunately, the dismembered body parts resulted in the miscalculation of the victims. Counseling will be provided to the emergency personnel and to surviving members of the church," Duma said.

Authorities investigating tragic KZN crash, death toll revised to 8
The H1 bakkie which was involved in the crash. | KZN Department of Transport Image: KZN Department of Transport The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the police are investigating the cause of a crash in which eight people, mostly mothers, tragically lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning along the N2 near the Mtunzini Toll Plaza. According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the collision occurred at around 6:47am and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 vehicle transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). While Duma initially gave the death toll as nine, authorities later confirmed that one of the bodies had been mistakenly counted twice and the correct death toll was eight. The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba, in northern KZN when tragedy struck. Duma said that the tow truck struck the rear of the Hyundai H-1, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. 'Those who were injured have been taken to hospitals and we wish them a speedy recovery. Equally, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Church,' he said. The National Department of Transport also expressed its condolences. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa said they were 'deeply concerned and saddened by the loss of eight lives in a tragic road crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on the N2 near Empangeni.' 'Preliminary reports indicate that the Hyundai H-1 was transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) from their place of worship to the Dukuduku/Mtubatuba area when it was struck from behind by the truck,' they said.
