Ryanair offers £50 off flights but there are two big catches
Ryanair has promised £50 off return flights for passengers who sign up to its Prime membership, but reviews of the deal are mixed.
The budget airline is about to release its Prime Member offer for August, giving members £50 off return flights operating between 30 October and 27 November. To become a member, you have to pay a £79 sign-up fee, which lasts for the whole year.
According to Ryanair, members have been able to save more than £500 so far since the scheme launched in March this year. If things continue in that direction, then Prime subscription holders might expect to pocket about £1,000 in savings by the end of the 12-month membership period. The latest membership sale began just after Ryanair's boss admitted staff are given bonuses for catching passengers with non-compliant bags.
The Prime deal isn't quite as uncomplicated or good as the airline suggests, however.
Firstly, Ryanair's calculation of potential savings only makes sense if you fly regularly anyway, always reserve a seat, and buy Ryanair's flight insurance policy. The airline includes savings of £120 for seat reservations and £180 for travel insurance. Extra bags and priority boarding are not included in the deal.
The even bigger issue is the potential ticket savings. Ryanair launches a three-day sale window each month, during which members can buy discounted fares. The next one begins on 1 August.
Ryanair promises that members can bag "£50 off return flights for travel between Thursday, 30 October and Thursday, 27 November". However, customers who have signed up for the subscription have claimed that the deals are rarely that impressive and often little better than those that can be found by searching on Skyscanner.
The short sale window, combined with the uncertainty on which flights will be included in the sale, means the benefits are limited for frequent flyers.
One unhappy passenger recently wrote on Reddit: "I'm in a long-distance relationship and I fly every two weeks from London to Helsinki. Ryanair is by far the cheapest and most convenient airline for me. I thought 'hmm I fly a lot, so this £80 should be worth it.'
"It's a scam. The free allocated seats are from like row 19 and behind, no front rows you have to pay extra for any of them. Kind of useless. The cheaper returns are a scam, genuinely cheaper to just look at Skyscanner. The app does not say when or if there is a discount for the next month so if there's no discount next month, it's basically wiping your ass with cash.
"No priority boarding, no extra bag, no discounts, only crappy seat selection. I've had two delayed flights over two hours, but as it's just under 3 hours so I'm entitled to nothing. Nothing about this is worth the upfront cost."
Another added: "I just got an email with the so-called discounted rates for members, and all I can say is it's a joke. There are just a few seats in planes (not all of them, mind you) for Prime members, so if they are sold out, you won't be able to claim your free seat."

Another wallet-friendly route to Albania's glittering coastline is to fly into Corfu and then hop on a ferry for roughly £15 each way. If you set up camp in Dhërmi, you can explore a new beach every day. A delightful beachfront lunch in the area will only cost about £10 per person. Laura Hewson, a Kiwi backpacker who explored the country last autumn, said: "We were planning to go Croatia. But one of our friends who'd been to Albania told us [we should go there]. They said it's like Greece or Croatia but cheaper and a lot more beautiful because there are not as many tourists. We're actually staying at a four-star hotel with breakfast included for the same price that we were staying in hostels with eight [strangers] in a room in Italy and Spain." Her travel companion, Farrell Modd, mentioned that social media influenced their decision to visit Albania, noting the impact of TikTok videos from travel accounts that highlighted the country's stunning landscapes. She commented: "It's beautiful, clear blue water, lots of swimming spots."

Destination X fans spot huge hint that axed players will return in twist
Destination X, hosted by Rob Brydon, launched last week and the first episode of the BBC show saw three contestants eliminated from the competition just 15 minutes in Destination X viewers are convinced that three contestants who were eliminated just minutes into the first episode will return. Some fans have even spotted a potential clue hinting that the trio didn't actually leave the competition after all. The new BBC show, which launched last Wednesday, sees contestants tasked with guessing where they are, based on clues and observations, at various locations whilst touring Europe. Host Rob Brydon, 60, dismissed three of the thirteen players before they had left the 'airport' though. Fans have since suggested that they spotted the trio later in the episode whilst the remaining contestants took on a challenge in Alsace. It comes amid speculation that they will return at some point after their 'exits' in Baden-Baden. Retired detective sergeant Claire, 51, economics graduate Ashvin, 23, and historian Chloe-Anne, 27, had bid farewell at the airport in Germany after failing to secure a place on the Destination X bus, which takes the players on the tour. They however later appeared to be in a scene filmed in France. Claire, Ashvin and Chloe-Anne, wearing the same outfits, seemed to be sat in a coffee shop by the "box of tricks" that the remaining contestants entered for a challenge in Mulhouse in the Alsace region. Those still competing had to answer questions and then look out of the box for clues. Rob had suggested that the trio had left though. After introducing the contestants in the first episode, he said that only ten of the original thirteen would be "progressing" beyond the airport. Claire, Ashvin and Chloe-Anne were eliminated moments later after losing two short challenges. The host told them: "I'm afraid it's goodbye. Please leave the airport." He then teased in a voiceover to viewers in the episode: "Well, that should show my remaining players who pulls the strings around here as the magical mystery tour I'm sending them on will have plenty of twists." Claire, Ashvin and Chloe-Anne seemingly popping up later in the episode didn't go unnoticed by fans. Travel warning for Brits heading to Spain amid strikes
While workers are legally required to provide a "minimum service" yet to be determined, the industrial action could still cause significant disruption for travellers. The strikes have been declared following hospitality workers on 12 Spanish islands announcing their own walkout plans. Spanish strikes - what airports are affected? Valencia, Alicante, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Ibiza, Palma, Girona, Tenerife South, Lanzarote and Santiago airports are set to be affected. The strike will impact all operations and work centres in Spain and will occur between 5am and 9am, noon and 3pm and 9pm to 11.59pm. The union has stated its decision to strike stems from what it perceives as a failure to create stable employment and consolidate working hours for permanent part-time workers. Your rights if your flight is cancelled or delayed The unions said in a statement: "UGT regrets having to go to these extremes and all the damages that may occur, for which the direct responsibility will be solely and exclusively the company and its reckless action with the workforce." The FeSMC-UGT Air Sector is calling for the firm to reverse the penalties, adhere to Joint Commission recommendations and immediately begin negotiations to enhance working conditions for more than 3,000 affected employees across the country. A Ryanair spokesperson said: "Ryanair does not expect any disruption to our operation as a result of these third-party handling strikes in Spain."
