Rex Moore: At the end you mentioned an "ah-ha" moment or a very pivotal moment for us as humans. It was actually a robot tying a shoe. Why is that?
Amy Webb: So this is crazy to think about because it's something that we do. We both have kids and, you know, like teach your kid how to tie a shoe. It takes a little bit of time, but they they all learn how to do it. Robots have never learned how to tie shoes. And part of the reason is it requires, you have to be able to sense and feel, tension in a particular way.
You have to be able to finesse the laces. It's soft, but also hard. It's it's a shockingly difficult thing that without the lived experience, it's hard to learn how to do that. So Google DeepMind like Google, built a robot that is now capable of tying shoes and AI, and it's a it's not a great not let's let's put it that way.
It's not like the world's greatest lace laces situation, but, it is such a breakthrough in the field of robotics. It's hard to overestimate just how important it was. And it's a huge harbinger of what's to come.
Nick Bartlett: And tangentially to that, you know, if you think about it flowing off of that soft robotics and thinking about the the robot's ability to grasp those laces gently enough to be able to tie them, but also firmly enough to make the knot. That's been a huge area that a lot of companies have been looking to invest in. And you think about Amazon has been playing in this space for ages because they would love to be able to just send a robot down the aisle and just pick and grasp random kind of oddly shaped things, but not break them.
So imagine if, you know, the robot tried to pick up my glasses. It really only has one speed. Most of the time it's crush. You know? So, there's a lot of great investment and a lot of great work being done right now in soft robotics. And not only just teaching the robot how to grasp, you know, with some variability, like a human can, but also creating a physical grasping mechanism that is soft to the touch and kind of can mold and conform.

Learn More » A leader in digital advertising During the first quarter of 2025, Alphabet generated $67 billion in revenue from its digital advertising efforts. This number represented 74% of the company's total, showcasing just how important this activity remains for the business. Ad sales were up 8.4% in Q1 on a year-over-year basis, driven by growth in Google Search and YouTube. The fears about how artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots will disrupt Google Search are understandable. But they might be overblown. This segment has nearly 90% global share of the search engine industry. And AI Overviews, now with 1.5 billion monthly users, is monetizing at the same rate as traditional search queries. There should be plenty of growth for Alphabet to capture. Grand View Research estimates the worldwide digital advertising market will grow at a compound annual rate of 15.4% through the rest of the decade. The rise of Google Cloud Google Cloud is becoming more important to the success of the business, as it provides enterprise clients with on-demand IT services. There are some notable customers on the roster. Google Cloud serves Home Depot, Charles Schwab, and Alaska Airlines, for example, highlighting how well the platform is resonating with a powerful clientele. This segment posted revenue growth of 28.1% in the first quarter. And it's producing quickly expanding profits, with operating income coming in at $2.2 billion, good for a 17.9% operating margin. It's reasonable to expect profitability to improve dramatically as Google Cloud's revenue base scales up, thanks to large fixed costs that can be leveraged. This should boost the company's overall bottom line. Riding the AI wave Artificial intelligence has now become a vital part of Alphabet's strategy. The company had its annual developer conference last month, and AI featured prominently among 100 new announcements that were made. This perspective isn't new, as Alphabet has been focused on AI initiatives for two decades. Advertising customers are obviously critical to the company's financial success. Alphabet uses AI to help them improve their ad campaigns by better targeting specific audiences and by driving efficiencies that can increase return on investment. Google Cloud is becoming a mission-critical partner for customers that want to use AI. For example, its Vertex AI product allows them to build native applications. Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous driving division, which just completed 10 million driverless rides, is also leveraging AI. This comes into play when navigating routes or executing a trip. It's not a shock that perhaps every single business out there is thinking about ways to position themselves for success in an AI world. Alphabet is surely operating like this, just on a much grander scale. To get there, though, will require a lot of money. Just this year, the company plans to spend $75 billion on capital expenditures, mainly to bolster technical infrastructure. But investors shouldn't worry. Yes, there are concerns about the ultimate payoff of these sizable investments. However, Alphabet brought in $36 billion in operating cash flow just in Q1. And as of March 31, it had a whopping $95 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities on the balance sheet, compared to just $11 billion of long-term debt. There aren't many companies out there that can afford what Alphabet is doing. This should give it a notable advantage as AI progresses in the years ahead. Investors are staring at a good deal There is no shortage of reasons to appreciate this business. Even in 2025, after an incredible run for the stock over the years, Alphabet looks like a good deal. That's because the valuation looks too attractive to pass up. Shares trade at a forward P/E ratio of 17.5 right now. This is a no-brainer buying opportunity for investors. Google's DeepMind CEO says there are bigger risks to worry about than AI taking our jobs

(via CNN Newsource) Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's AI research arm DeepMind and a Nobel Prize laureate, isn't too worried about an AI 'jobpocalypse.' Instead of fretting over AI replacing jobs, he's worried about the technology falling into the wrong hands – and a lack of guardrails to keep sophisticated, autonomous AI models under control. 'Both of those risks are important, challenging ones,' he said in an interview with CNN's Anna Stewart at the SXSW festival in London, which takes place this week. Last week, the CEO of high-profile AI lab Anthropic had a stark warning about the future of the job landscape, claiming that AI could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs. But Hassabis said he's most concerned about the potential misuse of what AI developers call 'artificial general intelligence,' a theoretical type of AI that would broadly match human-level intelligence. 'A bad actor could repurpose those same technologies for a harmful end,' he said. 'And so one big thing is… how do we restrict access to these systems, powerful systems to bad actors…but enable good actors to do many, many amazing things with it?' (via CNN Newsource) Hackers have used AI to generate voice messages impersonating US government officials, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a May public advisory. A report commissioned by the US State Department last year found that AI could pose 'catastrophic' national security risks, CNN reported. AI has also facilitated the creation of deepfake pornography — though the Take It Down Act, which U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law last month, aims to stop the proliferation of these deepfakes by making it illegal to share nonconsensual explicit images online. Hassabis isn't the first to call out such concerns. But his comments further underscore both the promise of AI and the alarm that it brings as the technology gets better at handling complex tasks like writing code and generating video clips. While AI has been heralded as one of the biggest technological advancements since the internet, it also gives scammers and other malicious actors more tools than ever before. And it's rapidly advancing without much regulation as the United States and China race to establish dominance in the field. Google removed language from its AI ethics policy website in February, pledging not to use AI for weapons and surveillance. Hassabis believes there should be an international agreement on the fundamentals of how AI should be utilized and how to ensure the technology is only used 'for the good use cases.' 'Obviously, it's looking difficult at present day with the geopolitics as it is,' he said. 'But, you know, I hope that as things will improve, and as AI becomes more sophisticated, I think it'll become more clear to the world that that needs to happen.' The DeepMind CEO also believes we're headed toward a future in which people use AI 'agents' to execute tasks on their behalf, a vision Google is working towards by integrating more AI into its search function and developing AI-powered smart glasses. 'We sometimes call it a universal AI assistant that will go around with you everywhere, help you in your everyday life, do mundane admin tasks for you, but also enrich your life by recommending you amazing things, from books and films to maybe even friends to meet,' he said. New AI models are showing progress in areas like video generation and coding, adding to fears that the technology could eliminate jobs. 'AI is starting to get better than humans at almost all intellectual tasks, and we're going to collectively, as a society, grapple with it,' Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told CNN just after telling Axios that AI could axe entry-level jobs. In April, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he expects AI to write half the company's code by 2026. However, an AI-focused future is closer to promise than reality. AI is still prone to shortcomings like bias and hallucinations, which have sparked a handful of high-profile mishaps for the companies using the technology. The Chicago Sun-Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer, for example, published an AI-generated summer reading list including nonexistent books last month. While Hassabis says AI will change the workforce, he doesn't believe AI will render jobs obsolete. Like some others in the AI space, he believes the technology could result in new types of jobs and increase productivity. But he also acknowledged that society will likely have to adapt and find some way of 'distributing all the additional productivity that AI will produce in the economy.' He compared AI to the rise of other technological changes, like the internet. 'There's going to be a huge amount of change,' he said. This Quantum Computing Stock Soared Over 30% In May. Is It a Buy Now?

Quantum computing stocks are some of the hottest stocks on Wall Street right now, even more so than AI stocks. While AI is still playing out, quantum computing stocks could pay off quickly if their technology becomes viable and mainstream, especially if you buy some pure-play start-ups. One quantum computing stock that soared in May was Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI). It rose over 30% during the month, but was up over 50% at one point. Clearly, there's massive interest in Rigetti Computing's stock, but is it worth buying here? Where to invest $1,000 right now? Continue » Rigetti Computing is up against some stiff competition Although Rigetti Computing had a great month, it's still down around 40% from its all-time high established in early January. Hype for quantum computing stocks reached an all-time high at the start of the year, so this makes sense, but is there a good reason for it to be down this much? Rigetti Computing is working on a full-stack solution for quantum computing, which means it will deliver customers an entire quantum computing unit ready for use. Rigetti is competing against multiple other start-ups to bring a viable solution to the market, but it's also competing against behemoths in the space, like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL). Everyone is racing to solve the same problem: errors. Quantum computing is different than traditional computing. While traditional computing utilizes bits (a 0 or a 1) to transmit information, quantum computing uses qubits. Qubits transmit information as a superposition of an atom, which is best described as the probability of being a 0 or a 1. This makes quantum computing ideal for many tasks that aren't linear calculations, but it also induces some errors. Because qubits don't transmit exactly a 0 or a 1, there is room for interpretation on what answers they give. This is a fundamental problem with quantum computing, and each competitor is trying different ways to solve this issue. Rigetti has developed several chip architectures to reduce errors and currently has about 99% fidelity, which is comparable to most companies competing in this realm. In 2025, it plans to release a four-chip, 36-qubit system that may provide an actual use case in the real world, although widespread quantum computing use is still years away. Rigetti Computing projects that before 2030, the market opportunity for quantum computing will be only $1 billion to $2 billion, mainly driven by various public companies and government research labs. After 2030, it sees demand really picking up, increasing to a $15 billion to $30 billion market opportunity by 2040. This is a long way out, and the question remains: Is it too far out to be seriously investing in Rigetti Computing? Rigetti Computing is a high-risk, high-reward stock Rigetti Computing's stock already has a fair bit of success priced into it. The company trades at a $3.5 billion valuation despite only generating around $9.2 million in contracts. Rigetti is also deeply unprofitable and recently agreed to sell up to $350 million worth of new shares to increase its cash pile and continue its research and development. This shouldn't surprise anyone, but it dilutes existing shareholders by flooding the market with new shares. This isn't the first time Rigetti has done this, and it won't be the last, and investors need to be prepared for more events like this. Furthermore, if Rigetti loses the quantum computing arms race to another competitor, its stock will become worthless. While nobody wants to see an investment go to $0, it's the reality with some of these quantum computing start-ups. That's why I prefer to invest in some of the larger players also competing in the quantum computing arms race, as there's a base business to fall back on if they lose the race. Rigetti Computing isn't a bad stock by any means; it's just a high-risk one. If you want to own shares, then I'd suggest a smaller position size, as that will protect you from it significantly harming your portfolio should it fail. But even a small position size can grow to a massive one if the stock takes off. I'm unsure if Rigetti Computing will be that company, but we won't know the results for a few more years, so I'll probably avoid the stock for now.
