'Why do you always lie?': Bengaluru residents slam DK Shivakumar's garbage cleanup claims

Hindustan Times4 days ago
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar took to X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday to announce significant progress in Bengaluru's ongoing garbage management efforts, declaring that over 9,700 of 10,354 complaints received via the BBMP helpline have been resolved. DK Shivakumar said 654 pending complaints are currently under "high-priority clearance".(X/@AkashUpadhye)
He said 654 pending complaints are currently under "high-priority clearance" and emphasized the government's commitment to a "Swachcha, sustainable Bengaluru."
The Congress leader added that CCTV surveillance and stricter accountability measures are being rolled out to tackle violations and improve sanitation enforcement across the city.

'A cleaner Bengaluru starts with action,' Shivakumar posted. 'We're strengthening our commitment with new accountability measures.'
How did residents react?
However, the announcement sparked a wave of criticism from Bengalureans online, many of whom challenged the accuracy of the claims and expressed frustration over continued neglect in their areas.
'9,700 complaints is enough to show the mirror,' one user commented. 'What proactive steps is the government taking to ensure a cleaner Bengaluru?'
Another user shared a photo of a garbage dump from JP Nagar 8th Phase and wrote, 'Complained multiple times. No one cares.'
Several responses highlighted ongoing issues in various neighborhoods, including Sarakki Lake, Ashtalaxmi Layout, and areas lacking basic sanitation infrastructure. One user alleged that BBMP field staff often close complaints without addressing them, remarking, 'Even if I say there is garbage in your bedroom, they'll close it without checking.'
Another user offered a more constructive take, urging authorities to equip and train sanitation workers better, while also calling on citizens to segregate waste and share responsibility.
Despite the BBMP's claims of a large-scale cleanup operation and promises of enforcement, the ground reality shared by residents paints a starkly different picture.

SC sets ball rolling for B'luru civic polls; orders delimitation by Nov 1

New Delhi/Bengaluru: (SC) on Monday issued the go-ahead for polls to the five newly-created municipal corporations in Bengaluru — in place of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) — to ensure better civic amenities in the metropolis. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state govt has also been told to complete the delimitation exercise by Nov 1, 2025. BBMP has been divided into five smaller corporations -- Bengaluru North, West, South, East and Central. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi ruled that when the population has been estimated by the state to have increased from 84 lakh in 2011 to 144 lakh in 2025, there is a need for carrying out delimitation exercise, based on which, the State Election Commission (SEC) can finalise the electoral rolls. Appearing for the state, senior advocate A M Singhvi and state advocate general Shashi Kiran Shetty said the delimitation process would be carried out between Sept 3 and Nov 1, when the final notification on ward delimitation will be published. They said final notification on ward reservation will be published on Nov 30. The SEC, through senior advocate K N Phanindra, had told the court that EC could not hold elections to the five new municipal corporations in Bengaluru unless the state notified the 'Conduct of Election Rules'. Responding to it, Shetty told the court that the state would notify the relevant rules within a week. The SC told SEC to proceed with finalisation of the voters' list for the civic bodies immediately after finalisation of the delimitation process and to complete the process in 60-90 days. The court has posted further hearing on Nov 3. SEC said in its affidavit it would require "60 to 90 days after issuance of final notification of delimitation by the state govt for preparation and finalising electoral rolls/voters' list for the five newly-constituted city corporations". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In its additional affidavit, the state govt stated August 18, 2025, is the last date for submission of objections/suggestions with regard to the proposal to establish the five new city corporations in the Greater Bengaluru Area. The 15-day period for considering objections/suggestions will end on September 2, 2025. WARD QUOTA POST NOV * Previous elections to 198-ward BBMP on Aug 25, 2015; council's term ended on Sept 10, 2020 * BBMP polls held in 2001, 2010 and 2015; IAS officers running corpn from 2020 * In April 2015, BBMP superseded over corruption charges; TM Vijayabhaskar appointed administrator for brief period * DyCM DK Shivakumar says wards of all five corporations will be identified and reservations announced post Nov

Shashi Tharoor apologises to Team India after nail-biting 6-run win vs England

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Monday hailed India's sensational six-run win over England in the fifth and final Test at The Oval, celebrating the team's gritty comeback to level the series 2-2. London: India's Mohammed Siraj poses after being named the 'player of the match' following India's win in the fifth Test match against England, at The Oval cricket ground, in London, England, Monday, Aug. 4, 2025. The series ended in a 2-2 draw. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI08_04_2025_000356A)(PTI) Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor praised the Indian squad's spirit and particularly lauded pacer Mohammed Siraj, whose standout performance sealed the result. 'Words fail me… WHAT A WIN! 🇮🇳🏏 Absolutely exhilarated & ecstatic for #TeamIndia on their series-clinching victory against England!' Tharoor posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'The grit, determination, and passion on display were simply incredible. This team is special,' he wrote. Tharoor, who had earlier expressed doubts about India's chances, admitted he was mistaken: 'I am sorry that I expressed a spasm of doubt about the outcome yesterday. But Mohammed Siraj never stopped believing! Shabash to our heroes.' India's win came after a high-voltage final morning in London, with England needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand. But Siraj, channeling what Tharoor described as unwavering belief, spearheaded a stunning turnaround with a lethal spell that saw India snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Siraj, who took nine wickets in the match, was named Player of the Match and later revealed that he had begun the day by setting an intention. 'I woke up in the morning and checked Google on my phone and took out a 'Believe' emoji wallpaper and told myself that I will do it for the country,' the 31-year-old said, beaming with pride and exhaustion. Despite the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, India's attack - led by Siraj and supported ably by Prasidh Krishna - dismantled England's lower order. The final blow came when Siraj bowled Gus Atkinson with a perfect yorker, ending the game with England just six runs short of the target.

PM Modi, Amit Shah meet President Murmu separately amid Opposition protests in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday separately. This was the first time the PM Modi met President Murmu after his recent foreign visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives.(X/@rashtrapatibhvn) However, the reason behind their meeting with the President and what they discussed with her is not yet known. The Rashtrapati Bhavan shared pictures of both the meetings on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. 'Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,' said a post by the President of India's official X account at 12.41 pm on Sunday with a photo of the meeting. Hours later, at 6.35 pm, it again posted about home minister Amit Shah calling on the President. 'Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan,' the post read. This was the first time the Prime Minister met President Murmu after his recent foreign visit to the United Kingdom and the Maldives. The meeting comes amid the ongoing monsoon session of the Parliament, which started on July 21, and days after both the houses witnessed a heated discussion on Operation Sindoor last week on Monday and Tuesday. Last week, the extension of the President's rule in Manipur for six more months was approved by the Lok Sabha. However, the upper house is yet to take up the motion for discussion. Manipur has been under the President's rule since February this year . The high-profile meetings also come amid Opposition's continued protests in Parliament over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls going on in Bihar ahead of the assembly polls there. The Opposition has demanded a detailed discussion on the exercise in the Parliament before the state polls. This is also the first time the PM and the President have met after the United States announced 25 per cent tariffs on India along with an unspecified penalty for doing business with Russia.
