Former Texas Longhorns DB Jahdae Barron is making a great first impression with Broncos
Over the last week, teams across the NFL got their first look at their rookies in minicamps. That includes Jahdae Barron, who was drafted in the first round by the Denver Broncos. So far, Broncos head coach Sean Payton and his coaching staff have been impressed by what they have seen from the former Longhorn.
During the draft, the Broncos' plan was to take the best player available. In the first round, it was Barron when they were on the clock, and he came as advertised.
"I would say [he is] exactly what we saw on tape: smart, savvy," Payton said of Barron on Saturday. "If you're watching closely, some people transition and stop very quickly. He has really quick twitch. I'd say he's sticky in coverage."
For many in Austin, Payton's assessment comes as no surprise. In four seasons as a Longhorn, Barron recorded 227 total tackles and 32 pass deflections. He also had eight interceptions, including a career-high five during the 2024 campaign. With Barron leading the secondary, Texas was a hard team for offensive coordinators to plan against.
As the Texas native frustrated opposing quarterbacks, he added to his trophy case. Last year, Barron won the Jim Thorpe Award. The award is given annually to the nation's top defensive back. While that raised expectations, Barron is focusing on enjoying the process and learning as much as he can every practice.
"It's fun just to be out here. Last time I put on a helmet was a long time ago, so I'm just enjoying the process," Barron said. "It's good—just learning, learning information, taking information in from all the coaches. But I'm just blessed, truly blessed."
If Barron becomes the player he is projected to be, the Broncos will have a franchise player in their secondary for years. So far, his play and work ethic have created more excitement for his future.

Longhorns 3B Sam Richardson enters the transfer portal
Longhorns 3B Sam Richardson enters the transfer portal Sam Richardson becomes latest Longhorn to enter the portal Since the transfer portal opened on Monday, the Longhorns roster has already seen a lot of change. That continued on Tuesday when third baseman and outfielder Sam Richardson announced he was leaving Texas. After struggling to earn playing time during the 2025 campaign, he is searching for his next opportunity. The Lewsiburg High School product redshirted during his freshman season and did not appear in a single game. That was partly because he was blocked at his natural positions. The outfield was locked down by Will Gasparino, Max Belyeu, Tommy Farmer IV, Jonah Williams, and Adrian Rodriguez. At third base, the Longhorns had Rodriguez and Casey Borba. Although Richardson didn't see the field this year, he has plenty of potential. The Mississippi native was ranked as the best third baseman in Mississippi and No. 3 nationally in the 2024 class. He made headlines in high school due to his raw power and ability to hit for power. Johnson joins a talented trio of former Longhorns in the portal. That includes outfielder Matt Scott, outfielder Donovan Jordan, and left-handed pitcher Chance Covert. They should all find new homes quickly as they look to showcase their skills with more playing time. Whoever gets Johnson will add a player motivated to make an immediate impact. He was a popular prospect coming out of high school, and that should be the case in the transfer portal. Over the next few months, it will be interesting to see where Johnson chooses to write the next chapter of his baseball career.

Ex-Broncos cornerback's retirement was 'totally unexpected'
Ex-Broncos cornerback's retirement was 'totally unexpected' A former Denver Broncos cornerback is hanging up his cleats. Ronald Darby informed the Houston Texans earlier this week that he planned to retire, and the veteran has since been placed on the club's reserve/retired list. Darby's sudden retirement was "totally unexpected," according to KPRC 2 Houston's Aaron Wilson. The 31-year-old defensive back is walking away from the game after previously signing a one-year, $2.5 million contract this spring. After signing that deal, Darby didn't even make it to training camp. Darby originally entered the league as a second-round pick out of Florida State with the Buffalo Bills in 2015. He spent time with seven NFL teams during his career, including a stint with the Broncos from 2021-2022. Denver signed Darby to a three-year, $30 million contract in 2021 and he was healthy for 11 starts that year. He then started five games in 2022 before tearing his ACL. After returning from that injury, Darby was cut by the Broncos during the 2023 offseason. He totaled 67 tackles, nine pass breakups and one forced fumble in 16 games in Denver. Following his Broncos tenure, Darby played 16 games for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and 13 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars last fall. He's now calling it a career with 447 career tackles, 106 pass breakups and eight interceptions on his resume. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
