Punjab businessman shot dead in broad daylight, Bishnoi gang claims responsibility

India Today07-07-2025
Yet another incident of daylight shooting rocked Punjab after a textile businessman and social worker, Sanjay Verma, was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Abohar city on Monday morning, officials said.Verma, a co-owner of the 'New Wear Well Gents Tailor' showroom, was attacked around 10.15 am when he stepped out of his car near his shop. According to the police, Sanjay had just parked his car when a few miscreants came and opened fire on him. He died on the spot.advertisementEyewitness accounts and CCTV footage suggested that the three assailants initially tried to flee on their motorcycle after the shooting, but their bike skidded a short distance away.
The killers then snatched another motorcycle from a passerby and managed to escape. CCTV grabs showed the masked shooters roaming around the area before the attack and then fleeing the scene in a hurry.Verma was rushed to the local civil hospital but was declared brought dead by doctors. His body has been sent for a post-mortem. A large crowd of relatives, friends, and locals gathered outside the mortuary as news of the killing spread, sparking outrage and panic among the local business community.Gangster Aarzoo Bishnoi, a close confidant of jailed Lawrence Bishnoi and his brother Anmol Bishnoi, has claimed responsibility for Verma's murder in a social media post. Police are verifying the claim and its possible links to extortion rackets targeting local businessmen.Abohar MLA Amandeep Singh Goldy visited the hospital soon after the incident to meet the bereaved family and express his condolences. In response to the murder, several trade associations have called for a complete shutdown of markets on Monday, demanding swift justice and better security for traders.Police have sealed all entry and exit points of the town and sounded a high alert across the region. A massive search operation is underway, with multiple CCTV feeds being scanned to identify the attackers and track their escape route.Meanwhile, the BJP attacked the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), calling it complete collapse of law and order in the border state."The broad day light murder in Abohar is yet another eerie reminder that Punjab's Law and Order has totally collapsed. Deafening silence of the AAP Government after each such killing only emboldens the gangsters. CM Bhagwant Mann must tell Punjabis who is responsible for this blot on Punjab's name. Wake up, it's already too late," Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar wrote in a post on X.- Ends(With inputs from Surinder Goyal.)

Liquor scam: Marandi slams ACB probe, seeks CBI investigation

Ranchi: State BJP president Babulal Marandi on Thursday said he was concerned over the attempts being made by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to weaken the Rs 38 crore liquor scam case in Jharkhand. Terming the ACB arrests as sham, he reiterated his demand for a CBI probe to conduct an impartial investigation in the case. Days after former excise secretary Vinay Kumar Choubey and two others were granted bail after the ACB failed to file a charge sheet within 90 days, Marandi wrote to chief minister Hemant Soren saying that his suspicions that the arrests were merely an attempt to deceive the public and protect the key conspirators were proving to be true. Criticising the ACB for failing to file a charge sheet in the case, the former CM claimed that the agency did not record the statements of the accused during questioning, allowing the investigating officers to record statements as they see fit, potentially implicating or exonerating individuals at will. "I have come to know that the interrogation of none of the arrested officers has been recorded so that the investigating officer can record the statement that suits him, trap whoever he wants, and save whoever he wants," the letter said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play this game for 1 minute and see why everyone is crazy about it Undo Questioning Soren's role in the scam, Marandi said he should act against the officers without delay. Reacting to the claims, spokesperson and general secretary of JMM, Supriyo Bhattacharya, said that he would not like to comment on the letter since he has not read it. "Let me read it first and then I will comment on it tomorrow," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BJYM state secy held after man shoots self over monetary dispute

Dehradun: The state secretary of BJP's youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), was arrested in Pauri Garhwal district after a 35-year-old man allegedly ended his life by shooting himself inside his car early on Thursday morning. The deceased, Jitendra Negi, a resident of Thalsari village, before taking the extreme step, purportedly uploaded a video on social media in which he alleged that he was ending his life due to pressure from the accused, Himanshu Chamoli, in a property-related monetary dispute of Rs 35 lakh. SSP Lokeshwar Singh said that the incident happened at around 6 am after Jitendra uploaded the video at 4 am. "Preliminary investigation suggests that he was inside his car at a secluded place and shot himself with a 12-bore weapon. He fired a single shot, which pierced his neck and struck the car's roof. Soon after receiving the information, police rushed to the spot with a forensic team to initiate a probe," said Singh. SSP Singh said that the police took cognisance of the widely circulated video in which Negi accused Chamoli of being the reason behind his drastic step, citing a monetary dispute. "Based on that, we tracked down Chamoli and arrested him before registering a case on the charges of abetment to suicide under BNS section 108. A probe is underway over the complaint lodged by Negi's family. It was also found that Negi was with his two friends inside the car during the whole night. However, in the early hours, when he ended his life, they were not present there. They too are being questioned," said Singh. Meanwhile, BJYM removed Chamoli from the post of state secretary. A letter issued by Shashank Rawat, state president of the organisation, stated, "Taking cognisance of the media reports related to Himanshu Chamoli, the organisation has removed him from the post of state secretary with immediate effect." Yogi pays tribute to Kalyan Singh in Aligarh on 4th death anniv

Agra: On the occasion of the fourth death anniversary of former chief minister Kalyan Singh 'Babuji' and third Hindu Pride Day, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and other BJP leaders paid tribute to the late leader at a programme held at Talanagri in Aligarh on Thursday. Remembering his legacy as a leader who shaped the state's political and social direction, Adityanath said the foundation of governance, security and development visible in the state today was laid by Babuji. A medical college and a super-specialty cancer hospital in Bulandshahr have been named after him, and his statue has also been installed. Babuji's journey from a teacher, RSS worker, BJP activist to the state's chief minister remains inspirational, Yogi said. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior BJP leaders Kalraj Mishra, Uma Bharti, deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary and programme organiser Rajveer Singh also paid floral tributes. These leaders described Babuji as a symbol of nationalism, social harmony and Hindutva. Several veterans recalled Babuji's style of governance —running the state without riots or bias, strengthening social engineering, refusing to fire on Ram devotees in 1992, and even resigning from the CM's post to uphold his pledge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 25 of the Best Cities to Live In Learn More Undo Leaders, including Vinay Katiyar, Swami Sakshi Maharaj, and others remembered him as "Hindu Hriday Samrat" and a statesman who continues to inspire. Defence minister Rajnath Singh joined digitally to offer his respects. The programme concluded with a short film on Babuji's life and contributions. Earlier in the day, Adityanath was in Etah to inaugurate a cement plant developed by Shree Cement at a cost of Rs 750 crore. He said this plant will provide employment to 500 people directly and 3,000 people indirectly. The unit will process fly ash from the nearby Jawaharpur Thermal Power Plant, and a 40 MW solar power capacity has also been installed. Addressing the gathering in Etah, Adityanath launched a scathing attack on opposition parties, holding them responsible for "destroying the image of India and Uttar Pradesh". "During Congress and Samajwadi Party regimes, criminal activities surged, women faced increasing threats to their safety and traders received no meaningful benefits. Historically, the Mughals looted India, followed by the British, and later Congress and Samajwadi Party regimes caused further devastation. In the 1960s, India was the world's 6th largest economy, but by 2014, it slipped to 11th. Since 2014, under the leadership of PM Modi, through dedicated efforts and strategic policies, India has risen to become the 4th largest economy globally," Adityanath said. Speaking about the state's development, Adityanath said, "Uttar Pradesh, under eight years of BJP's double-engine govt, has transformed remarkably. Before 2017, UP ranked seventh among Indian states; today, it proudly stands as the 2nd-ranked state." "When govt's policies are clear and their intentions are clean, and there is a will to work under the policy of zero tolerance for crime and criminals, the results of developments are visible like the one we are seeing right now in Etah. Eight to nine years ago, Etah was dominated by mafia and criminals, under the protection of ruling powers, they encroached upon the lands of the poor. Under Congress's rule, people could not build homes; they had to buy cement discreetly. Whether it's Congress or the Samajwadi Party, their vision differs from PM Modi's 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas'; they have a rigid vision. They wanted everyone's support, but for the development of their own families," Adityanath added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
