Jill Sobule Dies at Age 66 in a House Fire
Jill Sobule, the acclaimed folk-pop singer and human rights activist, died in a reported house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, on Thursday (May 1). She was 66 years old.
The groundbreaking artist, who identified as bisexual, began her career with her 1990 debut album Things Here Are Different. The set sparked her first appearance on Billboard's charts as its single 'Too Cool to Fall in Love' hit No. 17 on Adult Contemporary. Five years later, she broke out with her self-titled 1995 album and its hit single 'I Kissed a Girl,' which peaked at No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 20 of the Alternative Airplay chart (then known as Modern Rock Tracks). Meanwhile, the LP's other big single, 'Supermodel,' was included on the soundtrack to Clueless.

Sobule's 'I Kissed a Girl' was released 13 years before Katy Perry's different song with the same title became a No. 1 smash in 2008.
Other albums in Sobule's discography include 1997's Happy Town, 2000's Pink Pearl, 2004's The Folk Years 2003-2003 and Underdog Victorious, 2008's Jill Sobule Sings Prozac and the Platypus, 2014's Dottie's Charms and 2018's Nostalgia Kills. The singer-songwriter was an early proponent of crowdfunding, with her 2009 album California Years entirely financed via donations from fans.
Sobule's most recent project prior to her death was her autobiographical musical F*ck 7th Grade, which earned a Drama Desk Award nomination for outstanding musical in 2023 and is set to release an original cast recording on June 6 alongside a special 30th-anniversary vinyl reissue of Jill Sobule.
'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture…I lost a client and a friend today,' the singer's manager, John Porter, shared in a statement. 'I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others.'
According to a release, a formal memorial honoring Sobule's life and legacy will be planned for later this summer.

Not only will he be showing up in the summer blockbuster Jurassic World Rebirth, but he'll of course be returning to the role of the dreamy Fiyero - as we saw in Wicked: For Good's first trailer. Filming Jon M. Chu's adaptation of the Broadway legend was always going to be quite the experience; but I never thought the man would compare it to Roland Emmerich's Independence Day - though it makes total sense. Feel free to agree or disagree, courtesy of Mr. Bailey offering these recollections in a GQ profile: Being slightly off the M1 in Munchkinland, with Ari [that's Ariana Grande to you and I] singing a beautiful mezzo soprano, and then seeing cars pulling up on the hard shoulder trying to record it. And then seeing men in the sky, [which] turned out to be microlights and drones. It was like Independence Day. Ok, so it's not the residents of Munchkinland running from an exploding Empire State Building; but the comparison still stands. Imagining Wicked's award-nominated artistry being staged in a field in England, with all the bells and whistles, must have been exhilarating. Though that big about the drones and microlights may be the kicker, as the right time of day could make those look like something not of this Earth. It certainly sounds akin to watching Independence Day in the '90s, and being blown away by something like Bill Pullman's stirring, title-dependent speech. Only Jonathan Bailey was much closer to the action than a Peacock subscription would get you, and he technically got to watch a free Ariana Grande performance. Either way, there's a potential for fun Jeff Goldblum stories to crop up. Wicked: For Good isn't due out until November 21st, but don't forget that you can stream Wicked on Peacock. As for Jonathan Bailey, he'll be next seen in Jurassic World Rebirth, which hits theaters on July 2nd - much sooner than what we know about Bridgerton Season 4, which will see him return to Netflix at some point in 2026.

What Time Does The 2025 Tony Awards Start? Everything To Know

The 2025 Tony Awards will air Sunday, June 8, on CBS and livestream on Paramount+. Whether you love the thrill of live theater, the spectacle of a great musical number, or you simply want to see the original cast of Hamilton reunited, this is the awards show to watch. This year, Wicked superstar Cynthia Erivo will host the ceremony, which airs live from New York. There is a lot on the line, including Audra McDonald going for a record number of Tony victories. Here is everything you need to know about the ceremony, including the 78th annual Tony Awards start time. The Tony Awards will start at 8 p.m. ET Sunday. The broadcast will kick off at 5 p.m. PT. The program is supposed to run until 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT. It will undoubtedly be after the first half hour to hour—the network wants to give people a reason to keep watching, and there's a chance this performance will draw in people beyond the usual theater crowd, since Hamilton became such a mainstream hit. Actress Audra McDonald is nominated for Best Actress in a Musical for her powerful turn as Mama Rose in Gypsy. It is her 11th Tony nomination—she has already won a record six, and if she earns the trophy again, she would reset her own mark. Broadway buffs and Lin-Manuel Miranda fans alike should tune in at 8 p.m. on the dot Sunday for the 2025 Tony Awards, which promise to deliver great performances and the usual snubs and surprises.
