TMC, BJP war of words over Abhishek's ‘dissolve Lok Sabha' remark
1 2 Kolkata: A day after Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee dared the Union govt to dissolve the Lok Sabha, conduct a special intensive revision (SIR) and then hold polls, BJP on Wednesday alleged that more than 2.7 lakh "doubtful voters" were registered in the Diamond Harbour parliamentary consituency, from which Banerjee is MP. Trinamool hit back asking why BJP did not dispute the results after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls or seek a repoll. Banerjee took to X on Wednesday to reiterate his statement about dissolving the Lok Sabha: "The EC has stated that the voter lists across various states, on the basis of which the general elections were held barely a year ago in 2024, are faulty and riddled with irregularities." "If that is indeed the case, and if the govt agrees with the EC's assessment, then the first step towards conducting a genuine SIR and standing on moral high ground is the immediate dissolution of the Lok Sabha. If one truly supports the idea of SIR, then as per the EC's own statement, the people of the country have been betrayed. Also, if the new CEC is truly as competent as claimed, then the SIR should be implemented across the country, not selectively in poll-bound states," Banerjee wrote. In Diamond Harbour, there are 17, in Bishnupur 35, in Maheshtala 92, in Baghaj 89, and in 32 booths where this increase has occurred. Where is Abhishek Banerjee? He should see that in Diamond Harbour, the govt is his, the BLOs are his, the BLAs are his — so is this why he is winning elections? Is this not a game of fake voting?" Thakur told reporters. He alleged, "Abhishek Banerjee should visit Diamond Harbour and find out whether Khurshid Alam's father is the same or keeps changing, and how this alteration happens repeatedly in the voter list." Trinamool refuted these allegations immediately. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "Elections in Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha in the 2024 polls were conducted by the EC. The polls were conducted under CAPF cover. The EC was involved in every pre and post-poll process. If there were errors, why did the BJP not complain about it then? Why did they not seek a repoll? The point is the BJP is unable to accept the 7.5 lakh vote loss handed over to them by Abhishek Banerjee. " "If we start nit-picking the voter list, then many BJP leaders may have to start defending how they won. The point is simple. If faulty voter lists led to the 2024 polls, let the union govt resign and hold fresh elections with a proper voter list. They (BJP) are only weakening their argument in defending the EC," Ghosh added. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Koppal man's murder: BJP demands NIA probe, Rs 50 lakh ex gratia
Bengaluru: BJP raised the murder of a Hindu man in Koppal in the legislative assembly Wednesday and demanded the investigation be handed over to National Investigation Agency (NIA) and that Rs 50 lakh compensation be given to the victim's family. A BJP delegation also met governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot and urged him to intervene and direct the state govt to transfer the case, alleging a deep-rooted conspiracy by "extremist" groups. In its memorandum, BJP said Gavisiddappa Nayak, from the Valmiki community, a Scheduled Tribe, was murdered on Aug 3 in front of Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque in Koppal town. BJP claims the killing bore the stamp of PFI and SDPI and accused the govt of showing a soft corner to "dangerous elements". At about 7.30pm, one Syed attacked him with a machete and killed him… Police failed to take precautionary measures, which resulted in this brutal incident." He said protests and a bandh by the Valmiki Mahasabha and Hindu organisations forced the police to act, leading to a few arrests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuoc Hai: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo "Considering the economically poor background of the man's family, the govt must provide at least Rs 50 lakh in compensation," he said. "The family should also be given two acres of land, and one family member should be provided with a govt job." Koppal minister Shivaraj Tangadagi said he had visited the family and action will been taken. Speaker UT Khader reminded members that zero hour allowed only statements but not discussions, and said the govt would provide a detailed response later. Meanwhile, Koppal town police filed a suo motu complaint against Srikanth Hosakera, divisional convener of Hindu Jagran Vedike, for allegedly delivering a provocative speech during a protest march to condemn the murder of Gavisiddappa Nayak on Monday. The case was filed on a complaint by police constable Hanumesh, which states, "Srikanth's speech incites animosity among different communities. It disrupts peace and harmony.
