Chorao, Chandor, Bandora among five villages to be developed as tourism villages at Rs 2.5cr
Under the Centre's Tourism Village Development Scheme 2021, the tourism department has identified five villages in the state to develop as tourism villages. Under this scheme, the tourism department, in consultation with the respective panchayats, will build tourism amenities to harness the tourism potential of the villages at an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
The tourism department intends to build a multi-purpose hall in each of the five villages where local fairs, festivals, live performances, and other events will be held. The five villages are Cotigao, Bandora, Chandor, Chorao, and Sal. In 2023, Cotigao was awarded the best tourism village of India, while in 2024, Bandora received the same award in the wellness category.
Initially, in 2023, the villages of Goltim-Navelim on Divar Island, Chorao, Cotigao, Bandora, and Vere-Vaghurme were being considered to be developed as tourist villages.
'The idea of tourist villages fits in with the move to expand tourism away from the coastline, which is already crowded. We want to promote heritage, rural areas, and the hinterland through these villages,' said a GTDC official.
To take the initiative forward, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has moved to appoint a consultant who will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the five villages. The appointed consultant will be responsible for the project from the conceptual stage to completion, including securing statutory approvals and govt grants.

Each village will receive Rs 50 lakh under the scheme, with additional funding considered on a case-by-case basis.
Tourism department officials said that whatever infrastructure comes up in the villages will comply with all local building bylaws and zoning regulations. The department plans to construct stalls to promote local handicrafts, tourist information counters, gazebos, and seating arrangements.
A GTDC official said the panchayats will be consulted before the conceptual plans are finalised. 'The goal is to showcase rural Goa, traditional art forms, pre-Portuguese heritage, and culture,' the official said.

HC makes way for accused to leave for Haj pilgrimage
Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court has allowed a 61-year-old man from Kota, who is facing a criminal trial, to travel abroad for Haj and Umra Jiyarat. The court stated that merely being an accused in a case cannot be grounds to deny his constitutional right to personal liberty. Mohammad Muslim Khan of Kota filed a writ petition challenging the regional passport office's decision on May 7 which denied him a passport for the purpose of undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. Khan is facing trial in a case registered under IPC Sections 498-A and 406. Despite securing a court order on April 16 permitting him to approach the passport office, his request was declined. This prompted another application before the trial court which was also rejected on May 15 on technical grounds. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand, while hearing the petition on July 30, held that the rejection amounted to a violation of the petitioner's fundamental rights. The court emphasised that the pendency of a criminal case does not automatically justify restricting a citizen's right to travel, especially for religious purposes. Counsel for the petitioner, Ajit Kaswa, said that the court quashed the impugned letter from the passport office and allowed Khan to travel abroad for two months, subject to certain conditions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Female Athletes in the World Click Here Undo These include his return by Sept 30, appearance before the trial court upon return, travel restricted only to Mecca and Medina, and surrender of his passport upon his return. The court also issued a directive to all subordinate courts to issue clear and specific orders in cases where accused persons seek permission to travel abroad. Justice Dhand noted that confusion created by vague or technically flawed orders often hinders the passport office from making decisions in such cases. The Registrar General has been instructed to circulate the court's direction among all judicial officers.

US issues alert to government officials in Karachi urging them to limit their visits at high-end hotels. The State Department Friday issued an alert to government officials in Pakistan asking them to limit their visits to high-end hotels in Karachi, citing a report of a threat. "The US Consulate General Karachi received a report of a threat directed at high-end hotels in Karachi," the department said in a security alert. The security alert urges people to avoid the areas and crowds, keep a low profile and to stay alert in places frequented by tourists and citizens of Western countries. The State Department currently has a travel advisory in place for Pakistan that advises US citizens to reconsider traveling there due to the risk of terrorism and the potential for armed conflict. Actions to take, as specified by Consulate General's alert Avoid the areas. Avoid crowds. Keep a low profile. Be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners. The security alert comes as the US and Pakistan are going to start a massive oil partnership. Pakistan is set to get its first crude oil shipment from the US later this year. Trump said the US will be helping Pakistan develop 'massive oil reserves'. Pakistan's largest refiner Cnergyico will import 1 million barrels of oil from Vitol in October, Cnergyico's Vice Chairman Usama Qureshi said. Cnergyico could consider buying at least 1 million barrels of US oil a month after it evaluates the first shipment, given its current monthly demand stands at 4.6 million barrels, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo As US and Pakistan turn a new chapter in their bilateral relationship, Trump announced a 19% tariff on Pakistani goods in a sharp decline from what was earlier announced -- 29%.
