Chorao, Chandor, Bandora among five villages to be developed as tourism villages at Rs 2.5cr

Under the Centre's Tourism Village Development Scheme 2021, the tourism department has identified five villages in the state to develop as tourism villages. Under this scheme, the tourism department, in consultation with the respective panchayats, will build tourism amenities to harness the tourism potential of the villages at an approximate cost of Rs 2.5 crore.
The tourism department intends to build a multi-purpose hall in each of the five villages where local fairs, festivals, live performances, and other events will be held. The five villages are Cotigao, Bandora, Chandor, Chorao, and Sal. In 2023, Cotigao was awarded the best tourism village of India, while in 2024, Bandora received the same award in the wellness category.
Initially, in 2023, the villages of Goltim-Navelim on Divar Island, Chorao, Cotigao, Bandora, and Vere-Vaghurme were being considered to be developed as tourist villages.
'The idea of tourist villages fits in with the move to expand tourism away from the coastline, which is already crowded. We want to promote heritage, rural areas, and the hinterland through these villages,' said a GTDC official.
To take the initiative forward, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) has moved to appoint a consultant who will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the five villages. The appointed consultant will be responsible for the project from the conceptual stage to completion, including securing statutory approvals and govt grants.

Each village will receive Rs 50 lakh under the scheme, with additional funding considered on a case-by-case basis.
Tourism department officials said that whatever infrastructure comes up in the villages will comply with all local building bylaws and zoning regulations. The department plans to construct stalls to promote local handicrafts, tourist information counters, gazebos, and seating arrangements.
A GTDC official said the panchayats will be consulted before the conceptual plans are finalised. 'The goal is to showcase rural Goa, traditional art forms, pre-Portuguese heritage, and culture,' the official said.

Their friend Rohit Yadav had invited them for holidays, and they arrived at the airport with visitor visas, all excited about the trip. At the check-in counter, however, their plans hit a hurdle. The Air India staff informed them that queries had been raised regarding their documentation, which required resolution before boarding passes could be issued. Jaimin and Priya Patel told the staff that it was impossible to resolve the matter at such short notice and begged to be allowed on the flight. But the staff remained firm, saying they cannot violate the protocol. After waiting at the airport for an hour in mounting frustration, Jaimin and Priya returned home disappointed. "About an hour later, one of my friends called and just said, 'Switch on the TV right now!' When I saw the news, I was shocked," Jaimin said. "The flight had crashed. That is exactly what Savji Timbadia, a Nikol resident, experienced. Everything had been arranged for his trip to London, where his son lives and works. He had seat 1-A reserved on AI 171. But early on Thursday morning, Timbadia made an unexpected call to his son, which puzzled both. "I told my son I did not feel like flying and would postpone my departure until Monday. When he asked about the sudden change of plan, I could only describe a feeling of mental unease. It was not something I could explain." That afternoon, a friend sent him a message asking him to watch the news on TV. "I got the answer to what made me feel uneasy," he said. "Lord Swaminarayan saved my life." Another passenger, who had a similarly lucky escape, was Bhoomi Chauhan. She had every reason to curse Ahmedabad's notorious traffic congestion enroute to the airport. The Bharuch native was to return to her husband in London after her vacation. Taking detours and navigating through traffic jams, when she reached the airport at 12.20pm, she was told that the boarding gates had closed at 12.10pm. "I pleaded with the staff to let me board the flight, but to no avail," she said. Angry and disappointed, she was returning to Bharuch when she learned about the crash. "I was shocked and also grateful to the divine for saving me," she said. "I was leaving my son in India. This was nothing but Ganpati Bappa's miracle." Jayesh Thakkar from Vadodara has business obligations to thank for saving his life. The organizer of one of the biggest garba events in Vadodara, Thakkar was scheduled to be on that ill-fated flight but got delayed in Kolkata due to work. "I was delayed in Kolkata due to work and realized I would not make it to Ahmedabad in time for the flight. That is when I decided to change my itinerary," Thakkar said. Similarly, Ravji Patel decided against flying that day with his son-in-law Arjun Patoliya as he had work to be completed. Arjun was going back to his daughters in London after the post-death rituals of his wife, Bharti, whom he lost to cancer in May. "He insisted that I go with him and meet my granddaughters, aged 8 and 4. But I had some work to do and told him that I will fly down after a fortnight. App-based platforms power one-third of Goa's taxi fleet
Nearly one out of three taxis operating in Goa are enrolled on the local app-based platforms in the coastal state, with most of them catering to tourists, official data shows. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's recent announcement that his government will not allow cab aggregators from outside Goa has raised hopes for the local app-based mobility platforms, which have been in the market for some time now. Allaying the apprehensions raised by local tourist taxi drivers over the Goa Transport Aggregators Guidelines 2025, CM Sawant on Friday said cab aggregators from outside will not be allowed in the state. Live Events The draft guidelines were issued on May 20. The last date to give suggestions and raise objections is June 30. Goa Miles Chief Executive Officer Utkarsh Dabhade told PTI that their service, which is affiliated to the Goa Tourism Development Corporation, was introduced seven years ago. "Since the introduction of the app-based service, we have been receiving good response from tourists and locals alike," he said. On an average, the Goa Miles fleet transports 15,000 passengers daily, of whom 85 per cent are tourists and 15 per cent local travellers, Dabhade said. He said their services are available across the state, majorly at both the airports - Manohar International Airport at Mopa (in North Goa) and the international airport at Dabolim (South Goa). The service has been completely a Goan brand with 100 per cent of the staff, including taxi owners, from the state, he said. The state-run Goa Taxi App has been active for the last two years with more than 1,000 taxis on board the platform. The service, having been introduced by the state government, is completely tourist-friendly with regards to rates and other facilities, a senior Goa Taxi App official said. It would be beneficial for all the tourist taxi owners to get onboard the app-based service to get better business and also other facilities, he added.
