Racist hate after Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Northeast people demand apology

India Today18 hours ago

The jumping to conclusions had abominable racist rhetoric in this case. While police in Meghalaya were still investigating the murder of a man on his honeymoon and searching for his missing wife, some people had pronounced the people of the Northeast guilty. Without a shred of evidence, and defying logic, they used crass and uncivilised language for the Northeast of India and its people, who, on a regular basis, face racial discrimination. The dehumanising of the tribal people and the Northeasterners in general in a heinous murder case was a new low. After it became clear that it was the wife who had plotted the murder and carried it out with some hitmen, people from the Northeast are hitting back at the hatemongers, and seeking an apology.advertisementThe cycle of racial toxicity started after the body of Raja Raghuvanshi, a man from Indore, was discovered in a gorge in the Cherrapunji area of Meghalaya and his wife, Sonam, went missing on June 2. The honeymooning couple, who reached the Northeast state on May 20, were last seen together on May 23.Following the murder, many people made racial remarks against the tribes in Meghalaya and also the entire Northeast. They said travelling to Meghalaya was unsafe.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said his government and the police would pursue the case as the state had been "defamed"."We will do whatever it takes. Our government and state have been defamed (even though) none of the accused are from Meghalaya," he said, according to an NDTV report. The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO), a prominent Shillong-based civil society group, has demanded a public apology from Sonam Raghuvanshi's family. Its chairman, Roy Kupar Synrem, criticised the family for making unfounded claims against the Meghalaya government and police, saying their remarks unfairly targeted and discredited local communities.advertisement"Their statements went beyond grief and bordered on deliberate misinformation. Now that the truth is emerging, they must apologise — not just to the government and police, but to every citizen of Meghalaya who was unfairly maligned," Synrem said.Raja and Sonam were last seen checking out of their homestay on May 23. They got married on May 11.Capping 16 days of mystery, Sonam was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur on June 9 (Monday). The primary investigation revealed it to be an alleged case of contract killing, as the woman was having an affair with a man who was also among those arrested.RACIST REMARKS AFTER INDORE MAN'S HONEYMOON MURDERAs the case unfolded, many on social media blamed Meghalaya and the northeast for the death of Raja. The posts below are being cited to just give a sample of the hatred and racial bigotry. There are some which are far worse."NE is full of ooga booga jungalees, never visit there. Normies who fall for sweet NE propaganda end up getting f$@#*d like this. Only exception is Arunachal and Sikkim," wrote one person."That's why Northeast also faces discrimination in other parts of India. Many gangs are active in the northeast state who kill people for money," wrote another person on X, revealing how the racist mindset normalises racial discrimination.advertisementSome went to the extreme of suggesting that the people of the region should be "eliminated"."Northeast tribals are savages, only eliminating is the solution," said another person. Many others made racist remarks and went so far as to call northeastern people "savages, cannibal and human traffickers".After Sonam's arrest, as it became clear that no one from the Northeast had anything to do with the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, the people of the region are seeking an apology for the racist remarks against them.SONAM RAGHUVANSHI CASE: PEOPLE FROM NORTHEAST SEEK APOLOGY"Indore Couple Case: Just a few days back, many defamed, demeaned Northeast & Meghalaya specifically after the couple went missing. Later the husband's body was found," shared a person from Northeast on X.Others listed how the state, which is a tourist destination because of the living root bridges, the colonial charm of Shillong, and the scenic beauty of places like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, had been defamed for being unsafe and for "tantric magic". They demanded an apology."Unsafe, Tantric Magic, Locals being dangerous, and what not? All such commentators today must apologise. This not only hampered the Northeast's image but also the tourism economy as a whole. Sonam (wife) hired three assailants to kill her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya's Sohra."advertisementOthers said it wasn't just Meghalaya, but other Northeast states were also villified."Not just Meghalaya, entire NE tribals were dragged in. They were calling us savages, cannibals, human traffickers and what not. Disgusting people!" shared a person on X.Some people called out knee-jerk reactions in such cases, cautioning how an entire region was at the receiving end of a hate campaign."A few days ago, many blamed the Northeast for a honeymoon tragedy in Meghalaya, calling it unsafe, even 'tantric.' Today, it turns out the wife has been arrested for her husband's murder. Let's not vilify an entire region before knowing the truth.""Everyone who blamed Meghalaya and Northeast India without knowing the truth, defamed the state, affected tourism, spread hate, owes a written apology," wrote another person. While the government is trying to bring the Northeast region closer, and tourists are travelling there in hordes to warm hospitality, some hatemongers end up defaming an entire state and region without even waiting for any evidence. This reveals that there is a change in mindset when it comes to the Northeast region of India. A very good beginning would be to incorporate more information on the region in the school syllabus.Must Watch

Harvard may get some of its funding back. But on one condition, says Education Secretary

Education Secretary Linda McMahon said on Tuesday that Harvard and other universities could get back some of the federal funding cut by the Trump administration if they changed their policies. 'It would be my goal that if colleges and universities are abiding by the laws of the United States and doing what we expect of them, that they can expect taxpayer funded programs,' the secretary said at a Bloomberg News event. McMahon said that the Trump administration was "making progress in some of the discussions" with Harvard, despite the ongoing legal battles. The secretary emphasised that the federal funding has a role to play in academic research at the universities. 'I think if we look at our research as for the public good, which I think is intended, then taxpayers are willing to see their tax dollars to support that kind of really good research. And so I'm sure that would continue at the university level,' she said. President Donald Trump has frozen more than $2.6 billion in federal research funding to Harvard and has moved to cancel its federal contracts. The Trump administration justified the actions as part of its effort to eliminate antisemitism on campus. Meanwhile, Harvard has also taken the fight to the court with two lawsuits against the Trump administration, challenging both the loss of federal funding and a decision by the Department of Homeland Security to revoke its license to enrol foreign students. The administration reportedly also asked the university to share its records about misconduct by international students on campus. However, it said that the college has not offered enough information to satisfy their requests. The Trump administration and Harvard have been at loggerheads, with the President repeatedly singling out the institution and taking aim at its perceived left-leaning and admission practices. Trump has proposed that Harvard's federal funding be moved to trade schools and called for its tax-exempt status to be removed. President Donald Trump recently said that the Massachusetts-based school was "starting to behave". Meanwhile, Harvard has rejected the administration's demands that it implement "viewpoint diversity" on campus in its hiring and admission practices. Columbia University has also lost about $400 million in federal funds and did not sign onto the "friend of the court" argument. Other private colleges, including Cornell University, Princeton University and Northwestern University, also have seen funding revoked in the Trump era.

Operation Honeymoon: How SIT got whiff of Indore couple's marriage gone wrong

Guwahati/Shillong: The first clue in the jigsaw puzzle that led to solving the murder plot of Indore transporter Raja Raghuvanshi came when a SIT team found it strange that the newly married couple did not upload any pictures of their trip in Meghalaya on social media. The police also examined 42 video footage and studied their behavioural pattern and movement. These clips eventually proved crucial as sleuths linked them to the crime scene after Raja's body was found and also examined witness testimonies on their movements after the murder. Meghalaya Police on Tuesday disclosed that their operation to solve Raja Raghuvanshi's murder and apprehend the suspects was unofficially codenamed 'Operation Honeymoon'. This specific codename was given because the newly married couple, who tied the knot on May 11, was on a honeymoon trip to the northeastern state, sources said. Sonam Raghuvanshi, who allegedly plotted the killing of Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, will be produced before a Shillong court on Wednesday, police said. Police said further suspicion arose when posts appeared on Raja's social media account at 2:15 am after his death, which investigators later learnt was a deliberate misdirection. Sources indicate that surveillance footage revealed Sonam meeting the contract killers approximately 10 km from where the crime occurred. Following the incident, she departed Shillong, taking an indirect route through Siliguri to Indore, briefly occupying rented accommodation, before travelling to Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh via Varanasi, assisted by a driver. Crime scene evidence included Sonam's raincoat, which she provided to Akash Rajput, one of the assailants, and a matching jacket worn by another suspect. Investigators also recovered a mobile screen from Raja's device. Significantly, when arrested, Anand Kurmi was wearing the same attire from the day of the incident. The machete used in the crime was bought from near Guwahati railway station, providing additional evidence of the calculated crime, sources added. Police confirmed that the machete does not resemble those traditionally used in Meghalaya. After careful coordination between Shillong Police and Indore crime branch, five individuals were arrested, including Raja's spouse, Sonam, who was brought to Shillong late on Tuesday. Police sources said 20 officers worked across various angles, piecing together the evidence. Within three to four days, they found Sonam's direct involvement in the crime. Meghalaya Police officially initiated Operation Honeymoon on June 7, leading to multiple arrests across Madhya Pradesh by June 8. Sonam remained untraced from May 23 until she surrendered to police in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night.

US Slaps Sanctions On El Chapo's Sons, Announces $10 Million Reward

The US government on Monday sanctioned the fugitive sons of drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, and announced a $10 million reward for information leading to their arrests. Archivaldo Ivan Guzman and Jesus Alfredo Guzman, who lead the violent Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, are accused of spearheading fentanyl trafficking into the US through secret labs in Mexico. The sanctions freeze any property and financial interests linked to the brothers and extend to entities they directly or indirectly control. The brothers were also designated as targets under the State Department's Narcotics Rewards Programme, with a reward of up to $10 million bounty placed on each for information leading to their arrest or conviction. The Trump administration alleges that Los Chapitos control secret drug laboratories in Sinaloa, Mexico, and have also secured access to fentanyl precursor chemicals and deployed brutal tactics to consolidate their grip on the illicit trade. "We will continue to protect our nation by keeping illicit drugs off our streets and disrupting the revenue streams funding Mexico-based cartels' violent and criminal activity," said State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce in a statement. "Today's action further demonstrates the Trump Administration's unwavering commitment to eliminating cartels and ensuring the safety of the American people." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described Los Chapitos as a "powerful, hyperviolent" faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, heavily involved in fentanyl trafficking into the US, as per The NY Post. He said the sanctions are part of US President Donald Trump's directive to dismantle drug cartels and target their leaders, including El Chapo's sons, using every available tool to "stop the fentanyl crisis and help save lives." El Chapo, once the world's most wanted drug trafficker, was convicted in 2019 on multiple conspiracy counts and is currently serving a life sentence at ADX Florence, a maximum-security prison in Colorado. The crackdown follows the Trump administration's earlier decision to label the Sinaloa Cartel as both a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group.
