MPs to join Gaza rally, voice support for aid mission

The Star9 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The rally for Gaza planned on Sunday (Aug 24) will see the participation of Members of Parliament, who are also calling on Malaysians to join in solidarity with Palestinians.
Government Backbenchers Club chief Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah, who is also Paya Besar MP, said invitations to the 'Perhimpunan Bersamamu Gaza and 1000 Flotilla Nusantara Break the Siege' at Dataran Merdeka had been extended to all MPs.
'So far 30 MPs have confirmed their participation, but more are expressing interest,' he told a press conference at Parliament here on Thursday (Aug 21).
Shahar said MPs collectively condemned and denounced the crime of genocide and the brutal killing of 239 journalists and media practitioners in Gaza by the Zionist Israeli regime.
He said the systematic targeting of journalists is a deliberate attempt to keep the truth from reaching the international community, and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.
'We express our full support for the initiative of the 1000 Flotilla 'Break the Siege' and Sumud Nusantara, a humanitarian solidarity movement spearheaded by Malaysia together with regional and international networks, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the patron, to end the cruel blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza.
'The MPs of Malaysia further express full commitment to assist the Flotilla mission in its goal of breaking the blockade and ensuring that urgent humanitarian aid can reach the people of Gaza without obstruction.
'We also pledge to extend all possible diplomatic and legal efforts to defend the safety of the Flotilla participants.
'Should Israel resort to aggression against the mission, Malaysia will support the necessary international legal and diplomatic action to hold the Israeli regime accountable,' he said.
Shahar urged all MPs, regardless of party lines, to stand united in defence of Palestinian rights, while also calling on the government to press for stronger measures against Israel at the International Criminal Court.
'The voice of the Parliament of Malaysia is the voice of humanity. We stand firm with Palestine,' he added.
Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid, who also leads the Global Coalition for Jerusalem and Palestine, said the 1000 Flotilla 'Break the Siege' and Sumud Nusantara mission would set sail on National Day, Aug 31, from Spain and on Sept 4 from Tunisia.
'Forty-four countries have already confirmed participation. We have written to at least 140 governments and some prominent global figures such as Pope Leo XIV, the Dalai Lama, the pastor of Moscow, (UN Secretary-General) Antonio Guterres, the secretary of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and many presidents and prime ministers.
'We want this mission – a non-violent, civilian mission – to be recognised by governments around the world, and to ensure that we are protected.
'We are going to face a very high-risk mission. The probability of being attacked is there, and we want governments to see that unless and until we act to intervene, Gaza will be annihilated.
'We proudly stand with the parliamentarians of Malaysia. We expect to arrive in Gaza on Sept 20,' he said.

Proposed Ministry of Law key to Malaysia's progress, says Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's proposal to establish a Ministry of Law aligns with the Malaysia MADANI agenda's emphasis on integrity, transparency and the rule of law as foundations for national progress. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said stated that this announcement highlights the ministry's crucial role in strengthening the country's legal ecosystem. She emphasised that the ministry would enhance the effectiveness of institutional reforms and expand public access to justice. 'InsyaAllah, we will continue to drive the success of the legal reform agenda, which not only benefits Malaysians but also positions ASEAN as a just, resilient, and prosperous region,' she said in a Facebook post today. Earlier during his keynote address at the ASEAN Law Forum 2025, Anwar revealed the government was considering establishing a dedicated Ministry of Law to ensure greater coherence in the national legal system. He explained that this move would enable Malaysia to engage more meaningfully with regional partners in advancing the rule of law, particularly with fellow ASEAN member states. Azalina expressed her appreciation to Anwar for delivering the keynote address and witnessing the adoption of the Joint Statement at the inaugural forum. She noted that this reflects the nation's leadership commitment to reinforcing regional legal cooperation in pursuit of more inclusive justice. 'Also, my gratitude to fellow Ministers and Deputy Ministers of Law from ASEAN member states, including Timor-Leste and Japan, as well as ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn,' she added. – Bernama

Malaysian homeowners not protected in current form of Urban Renewal Act, says Fomca

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is not ready for the Urban Renewal Act (URA) in its current form as it is too sensitive, says Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) chief executive officer Dr T. Saravanan. 'The Act is too far-reaching, and too dangerous to be rushed into Parliament without a fundamental revamp and genuine stakeholder consultation. At stake are the very homes, livelihoods, and security of Malaysian families,' he said. Saravanan added that safeguards must be put in place to protect homeowners, as developers have been approaching residents with half-truths and promises that are either misleading or incomplete or applying pressure to sign consent documents. 'For most Malaysians, a home is their largest lifetime investment, built through decades of hard work and representing priceless family memories. To expose citizens to such risks without strong safeguards is unacceptable,' he added. Saravanan then said that if the URA is introduced in its current state, it will tilt the balance dangerously in favour of developers, effectively becoming a developers' charter instead of a people's charter. 'Fomca insists that a 95% consent threshold is the only acceptable safeguard. Any lower threshold — whether 75 or 80% — would open the door to forced displacement,' he added. Saravanan said that a 95% safeguard ensures that redevelopment can only proceed with overwhelming community support and compels developers to negotiate fairly instead of forcing through projects with a slim majority. 'Any credible URA must guarantee fundamental rights for homeowners. Families must have access to clear and accurate information in languages they understand, not sales pitches masquerading as proposals,' he added. Saravanan then said that consent must be verified independently and transparently, free from coercion. 'Disputes must be resolved through independent tribunals with equal representation, and legal aid must be made available so that no homeowner is left voiceless,' he added. 'Compensation must reflect not just market value but also relocation costs and the emotional loss of uprooting families. Above all, dignity and non-coercion must be guaranteed,' said Saravanan. He then said that urban renewal should be about empowering communities and not displacing them. 'Urban renewal should preserve social bonds, not tear them apart. It should strengthen trust between the people and the government, not erode it,' he said. 'If the URA is rushed through Parliament in its present form, it risks leaving ordinary citizens exposed to exploitation and injustice, undermining public faith in both government and law,' added Saravanan.
