Sudden suspension of Smart Selangor bus routes sparks public outcry

KUALA LUMPUR: The sudden suspension of five Smart Selangor bus routes in Subang Jaya earlier this month has provoked widespread frustration among residents, many of whom depend heavily on the free service for their daily journeys to work, school and healthcare facilities.
This disruption has left commuters without clear alternatives, triggering a flood of complaints on social media and urgent calls for action from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
MBSJ announced the temporary suspension of the affected routes on May 2, but did not give a date for when services might resume, leaving thousands in uncertainty.
Many working adults expressed how the suspension has thrown their daily routines into chaos, with no immediate alternatives readily available in the impacted areas.
"MBSJ, can you provide an alternative for the SJ03 Smart Selangor bus that suddenly stopped? How am I supposed to get to work?
"Please provide a solution as soon as possible. The Rapid KL On-Demand service does not even cover the Kinrara BK5 light rail transit (LRT) area," said user @HedayahDain on X.
Another user, @iripann, lamented the increased cost of transport.
"When will the Smart Selangor buses resume? It has been unbearable to pay for e-hailing services every day just to get to Serdang Hospital.
"The Rapid KL On-Demand service costs RM4 per ride and only operates from 8am to 8pm. It is not practical at all."
Some have questioned whether the service has been discontinued without prior notice.
"Has the SJ03 bus stopped for good? I did not see it yesterday or today. I rely on it to get home from the LRT station as it is the only bus that serves my neighbourhood," another user said.
Parents, educators and students have also voiced concern over the disruption to schooling, particularly affecting those in Puchong and Kinrara.
"This has impacted Form Six students travelling from the BK5 LRT station to Batu 8. Today, they had to walk all the way to college. We urge the city council to find an immediate alternative," a Facebook user appealed.
"Our students will be severely affected. Many live along the bus routes such as Taman Mawar, Puchong Jaya and Taman Kinrara. We hope the buses are reinstated as soon as possible," said user Francis Ng Chun Kia.
"Please understand that the Smart Selangor bus is essential for students from BK5, Batu 8 and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Puchong Jaya (A). Nearly all of them rely on it," said another user, Chikta Kunan.
Besides working adults and students, the elderly have also felt the impact of the suspension.
"It was heartbreaking to see an elderly gentleman waiting in the heat. These buses need regular maintenance," said user @anisabdaziz_.
Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that bus services on five Smart Selangor routes in Subang Jaya were suspended after the operator failed to submit permit applications on time and did not meet key licensing conditions, APAD said.
APAD clarified that the disruption was not caused by processing delays, but by SKS Coachbuilders Sdn Bhd's late submission of applications, which were only received on April 25 and 26.
The New Straits Times has contacted APAD for further comments but has yet to receive a response.

Land Public Transport Agency revokes lorry firm's licence over Teluk Intan crash that killed nine FRU personnel

PUTRAJAYA, May 30 — The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has revoked the licence of the operator of the stone-laden lorry company involved in an accident that claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, on May 13. The revocation of Tashveen Trading's operator license is effective May 29, 2025. 'With the revocation of the operator's license, the company is not permitted to operate or provide any services using any vehicles licensed under that operator's license,' APAD stated in a press release today. APAD's investigation also found that the company failed to comply with the Industrial Code of Practice (ICOP) safety requirements, failed to ensure the Global Positioning System (GPS) was functional and had expired, was carrying loads that violated the type of goods specified in the vehicle's permit, and did not prioritize the safety of other road users. APAD wants to emphasize its stance that it will never compromise on any dangerous driving offences by public land transport vehicles that cause accidents and can threaten the safety of road users. 'APAD also wishes to advise all licensed operators to comply with the license conditions set from time to time to avoid undesirable incidents, which could then lead to license revocation,' APAD said. In the incident at 8.50am on May 13, an FRU lorry carrying 18 personnel from Unit 5, based in Sungai Senam, Ipoh, was involved in a collision with a stone-laden lorry while on its way back after completing duties for the Chitrapournami celebration in Teluk Intan. The accident also resulted in two serious injuries and seven other injuries. — Bernama

Lorry operator's licence revoked after fatal FRU truck crash

The accident on May 13 involved a gravel-laden lorry and a FRU truck transporting personnel who were returning from a security deployment in Ipoh. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Land Public Transport Agency (Apad) has revoked the operating licence of the company linked to a May 13 crash that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) men. In a statement today, Apad said its investigations revealed that Tashveen Trading had committed multiple safety breaches, including transporting goods not authorised under its vehicle permit. Apad said the company also failed to comply with its Industry Code of Practice (ICOP), was operating with a non-functional and expired GPS tracking system, and did not provide access to essential operational records, 'Following these findings, Apad's license suspension and cancellation committee yesterday decided to revoke the company's operator license with immediate effect,' it said. 'The company is now barred from operating or providing services using any vehicle previously authorised under the licence. 'Apad does not tolerate dangerous driving practices involving public transport vehicles that threaten road users' safety.' The crash occurred when a gravel-laden lorry collided with a FRU truck transporting personnel who were returning from a security deployment in Ipoh. The driver of the lorry had previously claimed trial to nine charges of causing death by reckless driving.
