Sudden suspension of Smart Selangor bus routes sparks public outcry

KUALA LUMPUR: The sudden suspension of five Smart Selangor bus routes in Subang Jaya earlier this month has provoked widespread frustration among residents, many of whom depend heavily on the free service for their daily journeys to work, school and healthcare facilities.
This disruption has left commuters without clear alternatives, triggering a flood of complaints on social media and urgent calls for action from the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
MBSJ announced the temporary suspension of the affected routes on May 2, but did not give a date for when services might resume, leaving thousands in uncertainty.
Many working adults expressed how the suspension has thrown their daily routines into chaos, with no immediate alternatives readily available in the impacted areas.
"MBSJ, can you provide an alternative for the SJ03 Smart Selangor bus that suddenly stopped? How am I supposed to get to work?
"Please provide a solution as soon as possible. The Rapid KL On-Demand service does not even cover the Kinrara BK5 light rail transit (LRT) area," said user @HedayahDain on X.
Another user, @iripann, lamented the increased cost of transport.
"When will the Smart Selangor buses resume? It has been unbearable to pay for e-hailing services every day just to get to Serdang Hospital.
"The Rapid KL On-Demand service costs RM4 per ride and only operates from 8am to 8pm. It is not practical at all."
Some have questioned whether the service has been discontinued without prior notice.
"Has the SJ03 bus stopped for good? I did not see it yesterday or today. I rely on it to get home from the LRT station as it is the only bus that serves my neighbourhood," another user said.
Parents, educators and students have also voiced concern over the disruption to schooling, particularly affecting those in Puchong and Kinrara.
"This has impacted Form Six students travelling from the BK5 LRT station to Batu 8. Today, they had to walk all the way to college. We urge the city council to find an immediate alternative," a Facebook user appealed.
"Our students will be severely affected. Many live along the bus routes such as Taman Mawar, Puchong Jaya and Taman Kinrara. We hope the buses are reinstated as soon as possible," said user Francis Ng Chun Kia.
"Please understand that the Smart Selangor bus is essential for students from BK5, Batu 8 and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Puchong Jaya (A). Nearly all of them rely on it," said another user, Chikta Kunan.
Besides working adults and students, the elderly have also felt the impact of the suspension.
"It was heartbreaking to see an elderly gentleman waiting in the heat. These buses need regular maintenance," said user @anisabdaziz_.
Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that bus services on five Smart Selangor routes in Subang Jaya were suspended after the operator failed to submit permit applications on time and did not meet key licensing conditions, APAD said.
APAD clarified that the disruption was not caused by processing delays, but by SKS Coachbuilders Sdn Bhd's late submission of applications, which were only received on April 25 and 26.
The New Straits Times has contacted APAD for further comments but has yet to receive a response.

Upset over healthy trees felled in Selangor

RESIDENTS of Klang, Selangor, are angry with their local council, alleging that it is on a 'tree-chopping rampage'. Taman Melawis resident G. Santhi, 61, said Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) contractors went to her area without prior notice and started felling trees almost to the root. 'I have been living here since I was seven. This is the first time this is being done,' said Santhi. 'Usually, they will only prune and trim the trees for maintenance and not destroy them completely.' Going by the way the contractors hacked at the trees, Santhi said they were probably not trained to do the job in a proper and non-destructive manner. HK Sidambaram, 46, another resident there, alleged that MBDK had destroyed the trees that made the neighbourhood a pleasant place to live in. 'Now it is hot, humid and very uncomfortable without the trees,' he said. Besides Taman Melawis, another area that bore the brunt of tree culling was the recreational park next to Stadium Sultan Sulaiman. Senior citizens, retirees and those who frequent the park were heartbroken after 15 trees there were cut down. Retired trade unionist A. Balasubramaniam said that without the trees, the seniors found it difficult to sit and chat because of the heat. 'There is no shade or cool environment and this has thrown a spanner in our social activities,' he said, adding that the retirees used to hold potluck meetings under the shady trees. Jeanne Sivakumar, 48, is another affected park-goer who used to exercise at the park every morning but has stopped after the trees were cut. 'It is too hot now and most of those who used to frequent the park have also found other places for their morning recreation,' said Jeanne, adding that the once beautiful park was now barren. Residents in USJ2, Subang Jaya, had also previously complained about rampant tree-cutting after Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) cut down 35 trees in their neighbourhood. A tree being felled in Taman Melawis, Klang. Christine Das, who is a wildlife conservation artist, said the indiscriminate cutting of the trees, which provided beauty and shade, had devastated the neighbourhood. 'The removal of this cluster of 35 trees has destroyed our vibrant bird habitat and reduced the bird population. 'It is a profound loss for me and my neighbours,' she said. Christine said that after a mediation arranged by Subang MP Wong Chen between all stakeholders in late July, MBSJ had agreed to replace the trees that were chopped down. 'But the dates have not been confirmed yet. 'Currently our jogging track is being upgraded,' she added. Wong, in a Facebook post on Aug 1, said the MBSJ Landscaping Department had explained that the trees in USJ2 were cut to manage landscape congestion and for public safety. Malaysian Society of Arborist president Mohd Zailani Jamil said any decision pertaining to trees in a public place must be based on the needs of the people in the area. Those involved in the management of these trees, he said, must also know how to maintain and manage trees to ensure they do not pose a danger. 'There is a technique to manage trees to promote their longevity as well as to ensure that their lifespans are long and healthy,' he added. Mohd Zailani said it did not mean the trees posed a danger to people just because they were old. 'With proper pruning and management, trees will not pose a risk,'' he said. He also said concerned residents had a right to know why the trees were felled. When asked about the felling in Klang, MBDK Landscape and Recreational Department deputy director Azzura Zainal said she would look into the matter. 'There definitely must be a good reason for the city council to have done that,' she added. Selangor local government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said the two city councils would be questioned as to what prompted them to fell the trees.

Asnaf lady complains about social support: Netizens think the problem was her many babies

WHILE charity to the poor is often seen as a heartwarming act, the result is not always so. Recently a lady from the Asnaf community went viral for complaining about the lack of efficiency in the Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) system in helping the poor. According to her in a lengthy video, the system was either slow at responding or gave the wrong items, such as pampers for the babies. A good number of netizens, however, pointed out her ungratefulness as well as her attitude, which appears to be condescending. Harap pihak MAIWP ambil maklum la apa yang akak ni komplen dan lepas ni bagi sekali ubat perancang dekat dia. Dah bagi betis, nak paha. Cara cakap tu macam tak bersyukur bantuan orang bagi. Sendiri buat anak, MAIWP pulak nak kena tanggung pampers and susu. DEMAND pulak tu — ALAN KENA SABAR (@IniAlalalannn) June 7, 2025 'It is tough being a good person. People have offered help but she is not grateful but complains instead,' said netizen @eightletternad. However, a hard-hitting @AmirulA1253 pointed out that there is a fine line between kindness and stupidity. Perhaps it is carefully worded insult towards those do-gooders who may make matters worse when trying to help out. Then there was @10pelukan who comically said, 'When having sex, did she invite the MAIWP officer?' Several others have since mocked her for having too many babies, take for example, @tolakrasuah suggesting that MAIWP give her condoms instead. Note that MAIWP has a responsibility to distribute zakat, which in accordance to Islam, is a compulsory form of charitable giving in Islam, considered one of the five pillars of the faith. But the lady has her supporters too. 'What right do you have to insult her for having children? The children are also the provision of Allah SWT. She did not speak for herself but for the Asnaf group. Asnaf are the parties that are eligible to receive Zakat assistance collected from Muslims,' said @YuraDaisy9. Also, @anwarrahindi said people, no matter which category they are from, have the right to speak up. 'If they keep quiet, there will be no improvement,' he continued. Another netizen said it was appropriate that matters should be made easy for the Asnaf community. However the lady may have been a little rough when speaking. Netizen @Bluee5626747921 further pointed out that children are indeed given by god, but parents must never forget that they too have a responsibility towards their children. —June 8, 2025 Main image: @IniAlalalannn
