Wanita PKR urges crackdown on child grooming, slams social media pages promoting sexual harassment
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Authorities in particular and society at large have been urged to take firm and prompt action in tackling the grooming and sexual harassment of children.
Condemning the existence of social media pages that promote such elements, Wanita PKR called on the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry to take the necessary action.
'The authorities must ensure that children remain protected under the laws of the country,' said Wanita PKR in a Facebook post.
Wanita PKR also urged parents and society to remain vigilant and protect children from sexual violence by monitoring the presence of such social media pages and offensive comments that violate the dignity of children, encouraging them to report to the authorities promptly.
'Wanita PKR also pledged to play a proactive role, including carrying out a series of advocacy and child protection literacy programmes within communities, aimed at raising public awareness to safeguard children and the wider community from sexual harassment,' it added. — Bernama

KOTA KINABALU, June 14 — The recent tensions between American billionaire Elon Musk and United States President Donald Trump have posed a setback to Sabah's space ambitions. 'This is relevant because we are targeting investment from Elon Musk's side. Most of the world's major commercial space programmes are based in the United States, followed by Europe. We are also considering China. All this requires firm decisions at the federal level,' explained Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah Ministry (KSTI) Permanent Secretary, Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim. From a global perspective, he said there is currently congestion in satellite launches due to a shortage of launch platforms. 'There is a bottleneck. Rocket operations are also very costly. That's why we're focusing on developing the ground-based operation site. In the future, God willing, with proper training, Malaysians – particularly Sabahan talents – can move further into the space sector,' he told reporters during KSTI's Sabah Excellent Service Awards ceremony at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort yesterday, which was graced by KSTI Minister Datuk Ariffin Mohd Arif. Hanafiah said the study on the proposed Sabah Space Centre is nearing completion, with the final report expected by the end of July. 'It was supposed to be completed earlier, but delays occurred due to pending information from several government offices. The new target for completion is by the end of July. It's nearly done,' he said. Once the study is finalised, planning for the project's implementation phases can begin, including identifying the budget requirements. 'Before we can proceed, the first step would be budgeting. The space industry is highly advanced and demands substantial funding, so foreign investment will be essential. Essentially, they will be the ones carrying out the implementation,' he said. He also emphasised that the project has the potential to create job opportunities for the people of Sabah. In addition to Sabah, the states of Pahang and Sarawak are also vying to become Malaysia's launch site. 'There are three states involved, if I'm not mistaken. But everything is still undecided. Each state is likely conducting its own study. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the state governments and subsequently brought to the federal level. Only then will a final site be selected,' he said. Nevertheless, Hanafiah expressed optimism that Sabah has the capability to be chosen as the launch site. Touching on the awards ceremony, he said it is part of the Sabah Government's policy to recognise the contributions of public servants. Search ongoing for pedestrian swept away in river after Nissan Sylphy-Toyota Camry crash on Jalan Ipoh, driver detained
KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 — A pedestrian is believed to have drowned after falling into a river when he was hit by a car that skidded in an accident on Jalan Ipoh heading towards the Kepong Roundabout, near here, yesterday morning. Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the accident, which occurred around 11:45 am, involved two cars and a pedestrian. 'Initial investigations found that a Nissan Sylphy, driven by a 39-year-old Bangladeshi man from the direction of PPR Batu Muda, lost control and collided with the front right side of a Toyota Camry, driven by a 43-year-old Vietnamese woman from the direction of Batu Kentomen, near here. 'The Nissan Sylphy then struck a pedestrian before plunging under the bridge and getting caught between concrete structures and iron pipes,' he said in a statement today. He added that the Nissan Sylphy driver sustained injuries and was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for further treatment, while the pedestrian victim, whose identity is still unknown, is suspected to have fallen into the river and has yet to be found. He stated that a search and rescue operation is currently underway by the Fire and Rescue Department from Sentul, Jinjang, and Hang Tuah stations, along with the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM), Motorised Patrol Unit (URB), and JSPT Kuala Lumpur. Mohd Zamzuri said further investigations revealed that the car driven by the foreign man was not his, and police are tracking down the actual owner of the vehicle for further action. He said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and the Bangladeshi man will be detained for further investigation. — Bernama

Selangor police: Malaysian actor-singer to face child sex offence charge in court next week after hotel incident with teen
SHAH ALAM, June 14 — A male actor and singer suspected of committing sexual misconduct against a 17-year-old girl recently will be charged in the Putrajaya Court next Tuesday. (June 17). Selangor Police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the prosecution directive against the suspect was received today from the Selangor Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office. 'The suspect will be charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for committing physical sexual misconduct against the victim. 'The Royal Malaysia Police is committed to ensuring justice is served. A thorough investigation was conducted to protect the victim's rights and uphold the transparency of the legal process,' he said in a statement today. On June 4, it was reported that police arrested a well-known actor and singer for allegedly committing sexual misconduct against a teenage girl at a hotel in the state. — Bernama
