Netflix show with 100% rating that critics are calling 'incredible'

Daily Record28-05-2025

The twelve-part series dropped on Netflix back in 2024 and it's safe to say viewers have been left seriously impressed with raving Google reviews.
Netflix now boasts an extensive library of TV series and films available at the touch of a button. The popular streaming giant has hosted some of the most buzzworthy series of recent years.
However, there's one hidden gem that might have flown under your radar, Scavengers Reign. This twelve-episode series landed on Netflix in 2024, starring talents such as Sunita Mani, Wunmi Mosaku, Rob Stephenson, and Alia Shawkat.

Prior to its Netflix debut, it premiered on HBO Max in October 2023, reports Surrey Live. But what's it all about? Scavengers Reign is an animated sci-fi spectacle charting the cosmic escapades of survivors from a cargo ship that crash-lands on an extraterrestrial world.

Initially, the survivors are scattered, forced to acclimatise to an environment teeming with strange and perilous wildlife. Key characters include Azi, a survivor, her robotic companion Levi, and fellow castaways Sam and Ursula.
A brief description states: "Created by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, the remaining crew of a damaged interstellar freighter ship find themselves stranded on a beautiful, yet unforgiving alien planet where they must survive long enough to escape or be rescued. As the survivors struggle to locate their downed ship and missing crewmates, their new home reveals a hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference."
Scavengers Reign has taken the viewing world by storm, with online praise pouring in for its cutting-edge creativity and detailed artistry. The show has achieved perfect scores across review platforms, boasting a dazzling 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 4.8-star rating on Google Reviews.
One enthusiast beamed, "This show is incredible. The creativity and attention to detail is strikingly innovative. The immersive, otherworldly atmosphere that you experience as a viewer is unprecedented. Everything feels so alive. The creatures and landscape designs are absolutely breathtaking, and the gorgeous artwork and animation is masterfully done. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that most of the show was hand-drawn, which is very impressive!".

Another viewer was equally swept away, expressing, "Scavengers Reign is a mesmerising masterpiece that caught me completely off guard when I stumbled upon it on Netflix. From the very first moment, it pulled me into its hauntingly beautiful world and hasn't let go since."
On Rotten Tomatoes, one individual praised, "This is one the greatest animated shows I have ever watched. The art style was beautiful, and the story was gripping. Please give this a Season 2!", mirroring a sentiment that appeared multiple times in reviews.
Echoing the voices of many, another commenter added, "Absolute brilliant! What a creative way to tell a story. Love it. We need a second season of this show."

The clamouring calls from fans for a sequel season highlight the show's phenomenal success. Unfotunately, it was disclosed that the series would not be returning for another instalment. Last year, the revelation left fans deeply gutted.
The show's creator Joe Bennett broke the news on social media, giving followers a glimpse of what might have been if the series had continued.

His post on social media stated: "As of right now, Scavengers Reign is not being renewed for a second season. I wanted to let everyone know directly because I really love our fanbase, they've been such champions for the show, and I don't want to leave everyone hanging.
"We've had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season last year."
Joe also took the opportunity to thank those who backed the series and the team behind its creation. He concluded: "But this is not the end. There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season, and we produced in-house at Green Street a teaser for what was going to come in the second season. Thanks again to everyone who watched and supported the show."

Spider-Man 4 filming to take over Glasgow this summer

Production crews will take over the city centre to shoot scenes for the next instalment in the Spider-Man franchise. Spider-Man 4, officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will see Tom Holland reprise his role as Spider-Man. Slated for a July 2026, the long-anticipated movie will be helmed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton, with reports suggesting that Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink has been cast opposite Holland. READ MORE: Baby Reindeer star to film new drama on Glasgow streets Film crews descend on Glasgow Cathedral for Netflix Frankenstein reboot Major update on Highlander reboot ahead of Scotland filming Plot details remain under wraps, but long-time Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal, while appearing on Deadline's Behind the Lens podcast in December last year, teased what we can expect from the story. She said: 'We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker [in No Way Home], and that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard.' The most recent Spider-Man film, 2021's No Way Home, was a huge box office success, grossing $1.9bn worldwide - making it the sixth highest-grossing movie in history. Tom Holland revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will begin filming in the summer of 2025 during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in October 2024. Now The Herald can reveal that production crews are set to descend on Glasgow to shoot scenes for the forthcoming blockbuster in mid-August. Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed approximately $1.9 billion globally Filming notification engagement letters for the production - which has the working title 'Blue Oasis' - went out to residents in Glasgow city centre earlier this week. The letters note that production crews are "working towards" filming on Bothwell Street, St Vincent Street, Waterloo Street and Oak Street through Richmond Street. According to the letters, some of the scenes being shot will "involve vehicles in the road, with production crews anticipating that Bothwell Street will be closed to vehicles (between Pitt Street and Hope Street) for approximately one week to accommodate filming. The news that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be shooting in Glasgow this summer comes as Scotland's biggest city gears up to play host to another bid-budget Hollywood production. The Herald understands that filming for JJ Abrams' next movie is set to take over Glasgow City Chambers and nearby Cochrane Street over a number of days next week. The still-untitled feature - Abrams' first since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - brings together an all-star cast, with Samuel L. Jackson tapped to play a key role alongside Glen Powell (Twisters/Top Gun: Maverick), Jenna Ortega (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) and Emma Mackey (Sex Education/Barbie). Reports suggest it will be a fantasy film inspired by the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter, a space opera about a video game player recruited to fight an interstellar war against aliens. Hollywood star Glen Powell was recently in Glasgow to shoot Edgar Wright's reboot of 1987 action flick The Running Man. A number of sites in the city were used to emulate the streets of New York, with filming taking place across the city centre, the West End and the SEC Armadillo. Approached by The Herald, a spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: 'While we cannot comment on individual productions, the council's Glasgow Film Office is in constant dialogue with film, broadcast and advertising productions of all sizes who are interested in filming in the city to establish how we can support them. "These productions bring a significant economic benefit to Glasgow, and have helped to steadily grow the capacity of our film and broadcast sector in recent years, as seen in new facilities such as the Kelvin Hall studio.'

Harmful gender stereotypes being shaped by popular animated films

The study, entitled 'Mr Predator and Mrs Prey', suggests the pattern reinforces the idea that males are associated with aggression and dominance while females are linked to vulnerability and weakness. Almost 1,900 animal characters from children's films were analysed and even after accounting for an existing bias, the study found an overwhelming amount of males were predatory characters. Almost 75% of all characters were male, and 85% of those were predators while in contrast, female prey outnumbered female predators by four to one. Read More The study then followed up with 140 children aged between four and 14, and adults aged up to 65 and through a series of interactive tests, it was revealed that many carried those same strong gender beliefs. It suggests the stereotypes are internalised early in life and are then carried into adulthood where they can persist. Dr Wood said: 'In the animal world, a predator is no more likely to be a male than female, and likewise for prey but these movies perpetuate this narrative, and children acquire this stereotype young. 'This study shows how easily potentially harmful stereotypes can be learned by children from everyday media. While some argue that stereotypes reflect real world differences, this study demonstrates that children can develop false assumptions and lasting misconceptions that often persist into adulthood. 'In an era where predatory behaviour is increasingly under the media spotlight, both online and in in the real world, it's important to reflect on and properly understand how our perceptions might have been formed, and the impact these messages can have on individuals.' There are now growing calls for more nuanced and responsible portrayals in the many forms of media consumed by young children during critical developmental stages. One of the central themes of his Netflix series Adolescence is how social media has an influence on children, and how harmful stereotypes of masculinity can affect young people in their teenage years and shape perceptions of gender roles and behaviour. Dr Wood believes it is important to change those perceptions from an early age with more balanced gender roles in animated films. Dr Wood added: 'While some progress has been made toward greater gender representation in media—such as efforts by filmmakers to challenge traditional portrayals like the 'rescued princess'—the work is far from complete. 'To build a more equal society, we need to critically examine and reform the messages we send to our children. This study also highlights the need for further interdisciplinary research into how media influences development and stereotype formation. 'It's a reminder that what we expose children to - whether intentionally or not - has a profound impact, often more than we realise.'

Pride and Prejudice gets a starry makeover as Marisa Abela, Harris Dickinson and Glenn Close lead all-star Audible adaptation for Jane Austen's 250th anniversary

Is this the most A-list audiobook ever? Forget screen credits - some of Britain's biggest stars are lending their voices to a new audio adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, released by Audible to mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth. Marisa Abela plays a sharp-tongued Elizabeth Bennet opposite Harris Dickinson's brooding Mr Darcy. Jessie Buckley voices the snide Caroline Bingley, Bill Nighy brings Mr Bennet to life and Glenn Close takes on the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh. While some fans are mourning the fact this dream cast never appears together on screen, Ms Abela confirmed they did come together in the studio. 'Recording this with such a phenomenal cast and team was such a true joy,' she said. Staying 'faithful to the original text', the production adds what Audible calls a 'unique interior perspective' from Elizabeth Bennet, offering insight into the heroine's inner world. The audiobook will be released in English on September 9 in the UK, US, Canada, India and Australia, with translations in Castilian Spanish, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese to follow. Ms Abela, 28, known for Industry and the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black, said: 'Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most fiercely intelligent and iconic characters in literature, and stepping into her shoes has been an incredible honour. 'What I love about this adaptation is how it lets us hear her inner world in such a vivid, intimate way - it feels both timeless and fresh.' Mr Dickinson, 28, whose credits include The Iron Claw and Babygirl, added: 'Playing Mr Darcy was an amazing experience. I've always known him as this iconic character, but getting to really dive into the novel through this process gave me a whole new appreciation for him and the world. 'Being part of such a talented cast made it even better. It's a real privilege to be part of something so timeless.' The supporting cast includes Will Poulter as Mr Wickham, Toheeb Jimoh as Mr Bingley, David Gyasi as Mr Gardiner, Rosalind Eleazar as Mrs Gardiner, Bertie Carvel as Mr Collins and Leah Harvey as Charlotte Lucas. Other members of the Bennet family are voiced by Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Mrs Bennet, Sophie Wilde as Jane, Antonia Salib as Kitty, Patricia Allison as Lydia and Aasiya Shah as Mary. 'It's remarkable how Pride and Prejudice has stood the test of time globally to be one of every generation's favourite love stories,' said Aurélie de Troyer, Audible's head of regional content for Europe. Netflix announced the cast for its upcoming six-part limited series based on Jane Austen's beloved 1800s novel Pride & Prejudice with Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden in lead roles 'Lulu Raczka's script is thrilling and conveys all of Jane Austen's energy in an engaging, modern way. Through the intimacy of audio, we have the unique ability to make the passion and romance truly electric, and Marisa Abela and Harris Dickinson's chemistry as Elizabeth and Darcy is undeniable.' This latest production joins Audible's growing roster of high-profile audio dramas, including 1984 with Andrew Garfield, Tom Hardy, Cynthia Erivo and Andrew Scott, The Mysterious Affair at Styles starring Peter Dinklage and a trilogy of Dickens adaptations produced by Sam Mendes. The company is also preparing new versions of all seven Harry Potter books, with the first due out in late 2025. Details of the cast are yet to be announced. And for those who still prefer their Austen on screen, Pride and Prejudice is set to return to television in a new limited series for Netflix. Dolly Alderton, the bestselling author of Everything I Know About Love, has written a six-part adaptation directed by Heartstopper's Euros Lyn. 'Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it,' Alderton said. The series will stay true to the period setting and features a high-profile cast. The Crown's Emma Corrin stars as Elizabeth Bennet, with Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden as Darcy and Oscar winner Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet.
