Phillies secure bizarre walk-off win not seen in MLB for over 50 years

Fox News5 days ago
The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Red Sox in walk-off fashion, but in a bizarre way that hasn't happened since 1971.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Edmundo Sosa was trying to be the hero at the plate in Citizens Banks Park. However, when he attempted to swing at a Red Sox pitch outside the strike zone, he checked his bat just in time as to not cross the plate for a strike call.
As he was doing it, though, his bat made contact with Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez's glove – catcher's interference.
No, Sosa wasn't intending on swinging all the way through the pitch, but when the bat makes contact with the catcher's glove, it's an automatic interference call and a trip to first base. With the bases loaded and nowhere to put Sosa, Brandon Marsh waltzed home for the 3-2 victory.
While a celebration unfolded for the Phillies, the Red Sox couldn't believe that's the way they went out on the road Monday night.
This marked the second time ever a catcher's interference ended a baseball game in the divisional era, which began in 1969, per MLB.com. The last time it happened was 1971.
It was a huge win either way for Philadelphia, as they maintained their NL East lead by a half-game over the New York Mets, who came back to beat the Los Angeles Angels, 7-5, in their matchup on Monday.
The Phillies saw RBI singles from Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto in the fourth inning, but those were the only two runs they scored over the first nine innings.
Boston, which saw Jarren Duran belt a homer in the top of the first inning, finally got back on the scoreboard thanks to Trevor Story to tie the game.
However, after not being able to capture a run at the top of the 10th, it was a brutal way to go out in the end.

Phillies Surprisingly Named No. 1 Suitor for Top Trade Deadline Slugger

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still waiting to get in on the action. In a high-pressure season, the Phillies have mostly played good baseball. But you'd be hard pressed to call them the favorites in the National League right now, and several other contenders have already made moves. The top needs many have identified for the Phillies throughout the summer have been center field and bullpen. But with Alec Bohm on the injured list, third base has emerged late in the game as a sneaky spot to upgrade. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - JULY 20: Eugenio Suarez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin #88 after hitting a solo home run against the St. Louis Cardinals during the third inning at Chase Field on July 20, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. MoreThere's only one third baseman worth pursuing for the Phillies: Arizona Diamondbacks impending free agent slugger Eugenio Suárez. Competition will be stiff, though, if the Phillies want in on the action. However, on Sunday, Thomas Harrigan of labeled the Phillies as the No. 1 prospective suitor for Suárez, purely in terms of need. "Why are the Phillies atop this list? Because when you look at the way this roster is constructed, arguably no team is under more pressure to win now than Philadelphia," wrote Harrigan. "The Phillies got close with a World Series appearance in 2022, but they've taken a step back since then. Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos and Aaron Nola are all signed beyond 2025, but each is 32 or older. So are Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, both of whom are in the final year of their contracts." Harrigan listed six other teams as fits: in descending order, the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. With only four days to go before the Thursday deadline, we'll soon know if the Phillies want Suárez as badly as many now seem to think they should. Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman day-to-day with back tightness

Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman had to leave Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a back injury, but Boston appears to have avoided a massive hit to its bullpen. Chapman may have to take a quick break, but Boston manager Alex Cora doesn't expect to lose his All-Star closer to the Injured List. Chapman is considered day-to-day with back tightness, Cora revealed after the team's 4-3 victory over Los Angeles. While it's great news that Chapman won't be shelved for very long, the ailment further hammers home the fact chief baseball officer Craig Breslow needs to add to Boston's pitching staff at Thursday's MLB trade deadline. With the Red Sox hanging onto a 4-3 lead, Chapman came on in the eighth inning Sunday to face the meat of the Dodgers lineup. He was very un-Chapman-like from the get-go, walking Miguel Rojas on five pitches, with ball four coming on a pitch clock violation. He struggled to find the plate against Mookie Betts too, walking him on five pitches. Chapman was able to get the dangerous Shohei Ohtani to fly out, but his velocity was clearly down and his control wasn't there. Cora and Boston's trainer went out to the mound, and after a brief chat with Chapman and catcher Carlos Narvaez, Chapman was taken out and replaced by Jordan Hicks. Chapman plead his case to stay on to face Teoscar Hernandez, but Hicks got out of the jam when Ceddanne Rafaela turned an unassisted double play. Hicks got his second save with Boston when he tossed a scoreless ninth inning to secure the victory. After the game, Chapman said through a translator he felt a little spasm in his back Saturday and he felt "a little uncomfortable" on Sunday. He hopes to return to the mound in the next couple of days. Chapman closed the door on Saturday's 4-2 win for his 18th save of the season, which has been one of the best of his 16-year career. The 37-year-old has a 1.30 ERA and 0.82 WHIP, and has fanned 61 batters in his 41.2 innings of work. Boston is reportedly looking at starting pitching options and right-handed bats ahead of Thursday's 6 p.m. trade deadline. But even though Chapman's injury doesn't appear to be anything serious, it highlights a need for more arms in the Boston bullpen as well. The Red Sox bounced back from a 2-4 road trip out of the All-Star break by taking two of three from the Dodgers over the weekend. The weekend series win keeps Boston in the second American League Wild Card spot, half-a-game up on the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers and one game behind the New York Yankees.

Phillies Reportedly Targeting Moves For Bullpen Help Ahead Of Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the better teams in baseball, but there are still some massive holes on their roster to patch up. The biggest hole the Phillies have is in the bullpen, created by the suspension of closer Jose Alvarado. Alvarado was suspended for 80 regular-season games and the postseason after failing a drug test for PEDs earlier in the year. Philadelphia signed David Robertson, but it still needs to add on. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported that the Phillies were looking to add another bullpen arm in the next few days. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images "The Philadelphia Phillies, after signing free agent David Robertson to a $6 million contract, want to add one more high-leverage reliever by the deadline," Nightengale wrote. With the Phillies reportedly eyeing a high-leverage reliever, it's important to look at some of the options on the market. It seems like Mason Miller and Emmanuel Clase are off the market, which leaves pitchers like Jhoan Duran, David Bednar, and Ryan Helsley as some of the best relievers on the market. If the Phillies don't want to go after a big-name closer, somebody like Griffin Jax could make a lot of sense. Jax would slot in well in Philadelphia. Phil Maton of the St. Louis Cardinals or Raisel Iglesias from the Atlanta Braves make sense, too. There are plenty of options to explore. At the end of the day, it's important that the Phillies add a talented pitcher to their bullpen. It could be one of the names listed, or it could be a different name. Either way, the Phillies need to keep adding on. More MLB: Padres' Trade Deadline Takes Wild Turn After Red Sox's Jarren Duran Decision
