Transfer news, rumors: Isak to Liverpool latest; Sesko decision looms

The latest transfer news from around the Premier League is focusing on two strikers who are seemingly close to massive moves. MORE — Every in and out for all 20 Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window Below is the latest transfer news on both Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko with Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United all involved in this game of transfer dominoes. Liverpool still pushing for Alexander Isak but Newcastle reject bid Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that a bid for Alexander Isak was rejected by the club as a reported offer of $146 million from Liverpool was turned down. Howe is currently in South Korea on Newcastle's preseason tour and said he hopes that Isak will play for Newcastle again despite the Swedish striker not going on said preseason tour: 'I was made aware that there was a bid [on Friday] - that bid was turned down all before I even heard about it. There's people back in England dealing with the situation. I really don't know what's going to happen next, but from our perspective we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.' According to Sky Sports, Isak, 25, is expected to be at Newcastle's training ground today as the team returns from their preseason tour of Asia on Monday. Isak has currently been using the facilities at his former club Real Sociedad in Spain after Newcastle said Isak had suffered a thigh injury. Reports from David Ornstein and Sky in Germany say that Liverpool have not given up on signing Isak, who Newcastle value at close to $200 million. After scoring 54 goals in 86 Premier League appearances since joining Newcastle in early 2023, Isak has seemed destined for a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world and on his day he is one of the best number nines in Europe. He seems to have his heart set on a move to Anfield but this all hinges on whether or not Liverpool will up their bid for Isak. It seems like that will happen and it also seems like Newcastle know it. So much so that they have already lined up Isak's replacement... Benjamin Sesko left out of RB Leipzig friendly as Newcastle, Manchester United tussle for Slovenian star Reports from David Ornstein and Sky Sports claim that Newcastle have made an offer of over $92 million to RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko, with the Slovenian striker not playing for the German club in their preseason friendly against Atalanta on Saturday. Sesko, 22, is seen as the replacement for Isak if Newcastle agree to sell him to Liverpool and the Magpies are scrapping with Manchester United to sign him. Per the reports, Sesko has not decided where he wants to go and it remains to be seen if Manchester United will match Newcastle's bid. The versatile forward is capable of leading the line but also drifting out wide and would be a very good replacement for Isak, even though he's been less prolific in front of goal so far in his career. Manchester United would also be a good landing spot for Sesko with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes buzzing around him in attack. Sesko has a big decision to make and Newcastle have put the ball in Man United's court as they've reportedly bid exactly what RB Leipzig wanted for their star striker. If he goes to Newcastle he will play in the Champions League but has a huge task to fill Isak's boots. If he goes to Man United it's no Champions League action, at least for this season, but he has the chance to be a key part of a new-look attack and the expectations will be lower. It's a really tough decision for Sesko and seems crucial to the trajectory of his career.

Is Onana set to stay as number one?

Manchester United's overall summer outlay is a surprise given minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe said in March the club could have "gone bust by Christmas" without the huge cuts implemented to slash costs. Club sources cite a number of reasons - including Marcus Rashford's £325,000-a-week salary being fully covered during his loan move to Barcelona, various sell-on clauses that have been activated this summer and the payment schedules agreed with Wolves and Brentford around Mathues Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo's arrivals - as the reason why they can still spend. United sources had said on Friday their attempts to sign Benjamin Sesko were continuing. However, subsequently, reports have emerged in the forward's native Slovenia stating the forward had chosen to join Newcastle. Neither club has commented officially on the latest reports. Yet, it is accepted even if Sesko did arrive in a move that would take the club's overall spend to about £200m, there will still be issues for Amorim to address, chief among them the goalkeeper. It now seems certain Andre Onana will remain as Amorim's first choice. The Cameroon international has been working hard on his fitness in the United States after hurting his hamstring on the second day of pre-season training. He is unlikely to be involved against Everton in Saturday's friendly but there is hope Onana could play some part in the final friendly against a Fiorentina side including former United keeper David de Gea at Old Trafford on 9 August. "We are always looking to improve the team and we have some characteristics we would like to have. But it depends on the market and depends on sales," said Amorim. "You can see the goalkeepers. Tom [Heaton] is leaner, Altay [Bayindir] did really well and [Andre] Onana is going to be better like the other guys that are getting better this year." Read more from Simon

Key change powering United resurgence under Amorim in stark contrast to Ten Hag

New details have surfaced revealing how Ruben Amorim is leading a cultural transformation at Manchester United, with his approach standing in stark contrast to the methods employed by his predecessor, Erik ten Hag. Amorim's tough start to life at United When Amorim was named as Ten Hag's replacement in November last year, it was hoped that the charismatic Portuguese coach would inspire an instant uptick in mood, performances and results at United. The opposite was mostly the case. In fact, it can be argued that things became much worse. United couldn't buy a win in the Premier League, regularly falling short as their rivals continued to get the better of them. The Red Devils appeared unable to cope with the physical and technical demands of the top flight, and the results showed this. Amorim and his players ended up finishing a lowly 15th place, having suffered 18 defeats all term. Nine of these came at home. The heartbreak deepened when United were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, squandering their last chance to secure Champions League football through the back door. After the final whistle on the last day of the Premier League season, which saw United claim an unexpected victory over Unai Emery's Aston Villa, Amorim addressed supporters at Old Trafford and emphasised that the worst is already behind and that the future is looking more promising. So far in pre-season, the signs have been encouraging and there is a feeling of positivity and optimism heading into 2025/26. The Telegraph's James Ducker, who has been observing the team in the United States has revealed that it's crystal clear Amorim is making changes not only on the pitch, but also off it. Amorim changing the culture at United Ducker notes that the squad now appears more united and tightly-knit than ever. Luke Shaw recently echoed this sentiment, describing the current group as the closest he's seen since joining United. Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha are given as examples. The duo have already formed a strong connection, which has been clear to see. That chemistry is starting to show on the pitch as well, with the pair posing a real threat in the 2-1 victory over West Ham. It's understood that Amorim is eager to have a team where everyone is pulling in the same direction. This could explain why he exiled the 'bomb squad' – Marcus Rashford who has since joined Barcelona on loan, Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho and Antony. On Amorim's running United's pre-season camp and how his approach is different to Ten Hag, Ducker points out, 'Given the ground they have to make up, it would not have been a surprise to see Amorim working his players morning and afternoon on the training ground but the Portuguese has actually dialled back the gruelling double sessions that were a fixture on previous tours under Ten Hag.' 'Guarding against injury may form part of Amorim's thinking but training has often wrapped by early afternoon, giving players time to unwind, relax and enjoy each other's company.' 'The 'rec room' complete with table tennis table, basketball hoops and a darts board at the Waldorf Astoria in Chicago where United are based is a couple of floors below where the players are staying at the hotel so has not been as frequented as expected. But the real bonding has evolved more naturally: over meals, in the gym, during trips to the baseball and walks to the Lake Michigan beachfront or around the shops.' Ducker adds, 'Amorim will have usually done his own gym session by the time players begin to file in for breakfast, usually from 7:30am onwards, and the manager's style has been very much to treat the players as adults. There is structure, yes, but not to the point of suffocation, which contrasts starkly with the strict, prescriptive regime ran by Ten Hag, with fines for lateness and an unbending approach to punctuality and process.' According to The Telegraph, when last season concluded, each United player was given a tailored fitness programme to follow during their holidays. Staff have been left impressed by the results and there is a sense that those plans were adhered to. Amorim himself has admitted being upbeat by what he has seen in pre-season and hopefully, it spills over into the competitive campaign. Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they take on Everton in the final game of their Premier Leageue Summer Series.
