Football legend Frank McAvennie gets behind women's football team in shirt deal
Scottish football legend Frank McAvennie has turned his attention to the ladies once more, this time by sponsoring a women's football team.
The former St Mirren, Celtic, West Ham and Scotland striker's podcast Let Me Be Frank has backed Hamilton Academical WFC with a season long shirt deal.
Macca, who hosts the Let Me Be Frank podcast alongside journalist pal Simon Houston, said: 'Anything I can do to help the ladies.
'I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to support the Accies Women's team like this.
"It's no secret that in the past I wasn't the biggest fan of women's football and didn't watch a lot of it, but fair's fair. I have become a convert and I have been massively impressed with some of the games I have watched.'
The Accies Women's team are set to play in the top flight next season alongside other SWPL1 clubs after becoming SWPL2 Champions for 2024/25.
Frank, 65, said: 'Hamilton did incredibly well last season and now they are back in the top flight and I'm thrilled that our logo will be on their shorts as they go for more glory.
'I knew some of the people who work for charities at Hamilton and have known the men's side for years. I've been going to see them for years.
'It gives the podcast a wee lift as well.'
Frank, who was at New Douglas Park this week to meet some of the players and hand over a cheque for £1,000, made a name for himself as a top scorer in both the Scottish top flight and in England.
His reputation for scoring stretched to the ladies, prompting comedian and TV producer to lampoon Frank in the television series Only An Excuse with the catchphrase, 'Where's ra burds?'
Frank said: 'A lot of my mates are poking fun telling me that I was very much a fan of the ladies back in the day, so I'm expecting a bit of a ribbing. But I can take it.
Some of Phil's sketches have been hilarious. It was all good fun.
"But in all seriousness, I'm delighted at the massive increase in profile that the women's game has enjoyed, not just in Scotland but all over the world.
"I've been watching a lot of the Euros which are on at the moment and it's just a pity the Scottish team didn't make it to Switzerland. Let's hope they can be back on the big stage soon.'
Frank, who enjoyed top flight football in the 1980s and 1990s, added: 'It would be great to see some of the Hamilton team showcasing their talents on the world stage.
"We will give our podcast followers regular updates on their scores as the new season progresses."
Frank has also promised to cheer the Accies women's team from the stands when they play upcoming matches against Partick Thistle and Celtic.
He said: 'Women's football has taken off and it has got to a stage where women's games are filling stadiums.
'You have got to be happy with the way they have got the leagues together and the clubs have bought into it. There are some decent players.'
Hamilton Academical WFC manager Robert Watson added: "This is a magnificent boost for the team.
"We are absolutely delighted to have the Let Me Be Frank podcast sponsoring our shorts for the upcoming season.
"This will be one of the biggest seasons in the team's history after returning to the top flight of Scottish women's football.
"We couldn't do what we do without the support of people like Frank. We are not full-time so every penny we receive is really important and extremely helpful."
The Let Me Be Frank podcast regularly boasts top guests. Past shows have included chats with everybody from Rod Stewart to Ray Winstone.
Frank said: 'The podcast is about letting people talk. Every time we have someone in we have a story that we haven't heard. It's great because normally I would ask a question then answer it, but Simon has taught me to keep quiet and let people speak for themselves and it has been a joy to talk to everybody from Scott Brown about his time at Celtic to Rod because you can't get much bigger than that.'

Nico Raskin in bizarre Rangers booking while warming up as yellow card sparks on air confusion
The Belgian wasn't in the starting XI and was booked for a seemingly innocuous off-the-ball moment Nico Raskin was booked for dissent in Rangers ' clash with Viktoria Plzen for a seemingly innocuous off-the ball incident – when he wasn't even playing. And it sparked a perplexed reaction from co-commentator Steven Thompson after Raskin himself was left in disbelief. Rangers were leading the Champions League third qualifying round first leg 1-0 thanks to Djeidi Gassama's opener when the bizarre moment, which left the BBC's commentary team astonished, took place. Experienced whistler Clement Turpin briefly stopped play on 31 minutes when he was called over by the fourth official and brandished a yellow card in the direction of Raskin, who, alongside his skipper James Tavernier, had been dropped by Russell Martin. The midfielder was amazed at the decision and replays could only conjure up a seemingly harmless moment where away defender Sampson Dweh went to retrieve the ball, and Raskin touched him on the shoulder. After TV cameras showed a confused Raskin walking away, Thompson asked: "What's he done to get a yellow there? Deary me. I'd like to know why he was booked..." The TV coverage later stated it was given for dissent – but couldn't clarify which incident had been identified. Commentator Liam McLeod then said, after a bit of digging, that it was for "delaying the play" but Thompson was adamant: "He didn't do that." Whistler Turpin, who took charge of the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid three years ago - is no stranger to officiating matches involving Rangers. That same season, he officiated the Ibrox side's sensation 4-2 win away to Borussia Dortmund on their way to the UEFA Cup final. He was also in charge for Rangers' Champions League hammering at home to Liverpool, and their qualifier against PSV Eindhonve in the same competition when the sides drew 2-2. Rangers to request postponement of fixture amid new rule
This is contingent on their progression in the Champions League. The Ibrox club wishes to exercise the new rule allowing the postponement of league fixtures between European play-off matches. The league's governing body had earlier confirmed clubs involved in the play-off round of European competitions could request their matchday three fixture be postponed. This is to aid their qualification efforts. Rangers' match against St Mirren is scheduled for Sunday, August 24, at the SMiSA Stadium. However, it will only take place if they do not progress to the play-off round. The club will have to first succeed in the third qualifying round tie against Viktoria Plzen. A win there will see them face either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge in the play-off round. Their progression will result in the postponement of the fixture against St Mirren. A club statement confirmed: "Our fixture against St Mirren at the SMiSA Stadium has now been rescheduled for Sunday, 24 August, kicking off at 12 noon and will be shown live on Sky Sports. "However, following a request from the club, should we progress to the UEFA [[Champions League]] play-off round, we will exercise the option to postpone the match and it will be played at a later date." The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has also provided an update on match arrangements for round three of the William Hill Premiership. An [[SPFL]] statement read: "As previously confirmed, Dundee United v Aberdeen on Saturday, August 23 has been postponed following a request by Aberdeen, who will be participating in the [[UEFA]] Europa League play-offs. "The new policy, which allows clubs involved in UEFA play-off matches to postpone their round three fixtures, was approved by the SPFL Board in April to support clubs aiming to reach the league phase of UEFA competitions. "St Mirren v Rangers has been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports on Sunday, August 24, kick-off 12 noon, but following a request from Rangers will be postponed if they reach the play-off round of the Champions League." The SPFL will announce new dates for postponed round three matches following the publication of the UEFA league phase fixtures at the end of August.
