X reacts to Commanders' trade for wide receiver Deebo Samuel

Yahoo02-03-2025

The Washington Commanders made their first move of the offseason Saturday by trading a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The trade does not become official until the new league year begins on March 12.
Samuel, 29, has one year remaining on a contract extension he signed in 2022. For his career, Samuel has caught 334 passes for 4,792 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns. He's also rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 20 rushing touchdowns. Samuel may no longer be the running back threat he once was, but the Commanders are confident that offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury can get the most out of him.
Of Washington's rumored wide receiver options, many fans were split on Samuel, believing his best football may be behind him. But for the cost of a fifth-round draft pick, it's a worthwhile move for the Commanders to add more help around quarterback Jayden Daniels. Adding Samuel does not preclude Washington from adding more receiver help in free agency or the NFL draft.
Speaking of reactions, here are some of the best reactions from X — formerly Twitter.
Deebo will be a perfect fit with Commanders. He is strong, great blocker, can line up in slot or outside and excellent after the catch. Just what they needed.

Offense got better today. I'll take paying $17.5 million to upgrade as substantial as we did today.

New All-22 on @AthlonSports: How will Deebo Samuel fit with the @Commanders after the big trade? Given what Deebo is great at, and what Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels did in 2024, it looks like a perfect marriage. https://t.co/bpshpqGHEQ

The Cowboys traded more to acquire Jonathan Mingo than the Commanders paid the Niners for Deebo Samuel.

Very interesting trade for washington here. Good value for a 5th, but i really don't see him doing any damage. But what do i know, he could be very good in that system. https://t.co/Ar4jJAFiFN

If Deebo Samuel is healthy I like him to bounce back from '24. He'll make some huge plays. Legit Commanders offense just got harder to stop. Interestingly, Samuel at 29 is younger than projected fellow weapons -- McLaurin, Ekeler and Ertz. WSH still needs to add youth/ speed.

Scary Terry McLaurin #1 WRDeebo Samuel's versatility.Jayden Daniels is smiling EAR TO EAR right now. And Adam Peters is already in his bag this offseason. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/FHLfXiHdhi

With Anthony Castonzo picked, who did Colts select in PFF's 2011 NFL redraft?

With Anthony Castonzo picked, who did Colts select in PFF's 2011 NFL redraft? With Anthony Castonzo off the board, who did the Colts select in PFF's 2011 NFL redraft? With hindsight being 20/20, who did the Indianapolis Colts select in Pro Football Focus' 2011 NFL redraft? With PFF using their grading system as their guide, they redrafted the entire first round. In this draft, following a 10-6 season in 2010 that ended in a loss in the wildcard round of the playoffs, the Colts held the 22nd overall pick and originally selected offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo. In this redraft, Castonzo went at pick 21 to Kansas City before the Colts were on the clock. So Indianapolis instead selected offensive tackle Nate Solder. "While the Colts would've loved the chance to select Castonzo again, they settle for Solder due to their original first-round pick coming off the board one pick earlier," wrote PFF. "Solder tallied an 81.6 career PFF overall grade and was a steady starter at tackle throughout his decade-long career." Solder was originally taken in the first round at 17th overall by New England. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion and played 10 seasons in the NFL, with seven of them coming with the Patriots. Solder appeared in 146 games, which included 143 starts. He was steadily one of PFF's higher graded offensive tackles for several years throughout his playing career. Castonzo, meanwhile, played all 10 of his NFL seasons with the Colts, which included making 144 starts. "Castonzo was very consistent in his 10-year NFL career. He logged 10,368 snaps at left tackle and earned a PFF overall grade of 76.0 or higher in all but two seasons — his first and his last, both between 73.0-74.0," wrote PFF. "He recorded an elite 90.8 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2014, his best season of work."

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell earns national spotlight in new NFL prediction from CBS Sports It's too early to make predictions. It's only June, but even though the mind says 'don't get excited', the heart, more often than not, refuses to listen. This Baltimore Ravens team looks good on paper, and even though games aren't played on looseleaf, every glance at the roster produces adrenaline. This team sent 11 of its players to the Pro Bowl last season. All of them are back. DeAndre Hopkins was added during free agency. Malaki Starks and Mike Green were drafted. The new faces have an opportunity to add more punch to an already formidable roster. Then again, so do some of the guys who have already been here. May we present Keaton Mitchell for your consideration? CBS Sports names Keaton Mitchell as a player to watch Mention the Ravens and why they are a Super Bowl contender, and several names may come up before a backup running back. Keaton Mitchell was added to Baltimore's roster as an undrafted rookie free agent. Pro Football Focus named him as one of the NFL's best UDFA prospects during that offseason. CBS Sports recently named him as an under-the-radar player to watch in their dig on one player from each team who could make a surprising impact. Tyler Sullivan wrote this one up and did a great job. Here's some of his reasoning for mentioning Mitchell as the Ravens representative. "For a six-week stretch during the 2023 season, Mitchell was a lightning rod. The back averaged 8.4 yards per rush and 10.5 yards per reception. However, that run ended when he suffered a torn ACL that also put a dent in his 2024 campaign. Now, Mitchell is back healthy and noted recently that he feels 'like I'm back better than when I first got to Baltimore'. Of course, Derrick Henry will carry the bulk of the work out of the Ravens' backfield, but Mitchell could prove to be a change-of-pace option with home run ability for what is already one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL." Henry and Mitchell could provide some 'thunder and lightning'. The latter is no stranger to adversity or this Ravens offense. An undrafted rookie free agent selected after the 2023 NFL Draft, Pro Football Focus named him as one of the best UDFAs taken that offseason, but two days after making the 53-man roster, he found his way to the injured reserve. He returned in Week 6 and appeared in eight games with two starts before seeing his season end with a torn ACL. He began last season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list but was activated for Week 10. For his career, he has notched 426 yards and two TDs on 62 carries. Keep an eye on him as the Ravens begin another run, and expect some big moments because even though the opportunities will be limited, he'll be able to deliver a few.

Former USC guard Desmond Claude commits to Washington

Former USC guard Desmond Claude commits to Washington Back in April, USC men's basketball star guard Desmond Claude made headlines when he surprisingly entered the transfer portal. On Sunday, Claude found a new home: He is headed to the Pacific Northwest to join Big Ten foe Washington. Claude is not the first Trojan transfer to depart for the Huskies this offseason. In May, Washington hired away USC assistant coach Quincy Pondexter. Shortly following that move, another high-profile Trojan transfer, Wesley Yates III, also announced his commitment to the Huskies. Here is what Huskies Wire had to say about the addition of Claude: 'As the Huskies scoured the country for a seasoned, high-impact wing to round out the rotation, the 6-foot-6 senior, who was named an All-Big Ten honorable mention for the 2024-25 season, is the perfect fit. Although he shot just 30.7 percent from long range last season, which has been one of Sprinkle's biggest points of emphasis throughout the offseason, Claude led the Trojans with an average of 15.8 points and 4.2 assists per game, adding 3.5 rebounds per contest while bringing several much-needed aspects to the roster.' With Claude and Yates both departing Southern California for Seattle, next season's matchups between USC and Washington should certainly be interesting. The Trojans and Huskies are slated to face off twice next season—once at Galen Center, and once in the Pacific Northwest.
