Movie Review: A reckoning in surreal, riveting ‘On Becoming a Guinea Fowl'

Shula is driving home from a fancy dress party one night when she encounters an unusual sight in the middle of a country road: her Uncle Fred's dead body.
But Shula, portrayed by Susan Chardy, does not behave in a way that we would expect. She doesn't cry out in horror or appear the least bit upset or shocked by the sight. Instead, we sit there with her in silence, her in sunglasses and a silver helmeted mask adorned with sparkling rhinestones. Shula looks straight out of a music video as she stares off into the distance. This, we realize quickly, is going to be a thing. At the very least, it's an inconvenience, ripping her out of her independent life and back into the throes of her traditional family, their patriarchal ways and all their crippling secrets.
This is the opening scene of 'On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,' Rungano Nyoni's darkly comedic, stylish and hauntingly bizarre portrait of a Zambian family funeral. It is perhaps the first great film of 2025 — though it's technically been awaiting its moment in the United States since 2024. It premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival and has already had a run in the U.K.
And it's a post-Oscars treat to have something this great in the cinemas to shake audiences out of their end-of-the-road awards contender boredom. What better way to do it than with something so different, so vibrant and so unforgettable as 'On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,' only the second feature from the self-taught filmmaker.
Nyoni centers this story around a dayslong funeral for this predominately Bemba family. Shula is in the middle of the generations involved, a reluctant but obedient participant in the rituals of the elders. The women organize all the things, make all the food, and then serve all the men who are sitting around doing nothing. Eventually, they'll all gather for a climactic, distressing scene in which they divide up Fred's assets and place blame for his death. It is, like everything else, deeply unfair and misogynistic, coming down to whomever shouts loudest.
The elder women cry and wail and are cruel to Uncle Fred's widow for not taking care of him. But there is an open secret that's bubbling up to the surface now that Fred is dead: He was a predator and a pedophile whose abuse of the young women in his family stretches back decades. This is, most of the elders agree, something that should just be forgotten and buried along with Fred.
'Do you want me to dig up the corpse and ask it what happened?' Shula's dad asks when she confronts him with the truth.
This is a society that remains bound to protecting the reputation and memory of a man whose actions continue to affect the women he violated: His wife; his young niece; Shula's grown, often drunk cousin (Elizabeth Chisela). The women are just supposed to compartmentalize and move on — something the matriarchs seem largely on board with.
Shula reads one of her auntie's words, presumably for an obituary: 'You were not just a brother, but also a father figure. … Ever jovial and joyous. A person who was fair.' Done in quick succession with her young cousin Bupe's confession that she too was a victim of the deceased, words like 'father figure' and 'jovial' echo with malice.
'On Becoming a Guinea Fowl' shares some spiritual DNA with 'Women Talking,' in which mothers pass on traumas and secrets and the cycle goes on, despite even the best of intentions. Nyoni and her cinematographer David Gallego make this a transportive, stylish and unforgettable experience that powerfully transcends the specifics of its setting, while also taking audiences into an culture that's likely unfamiliar.
The ending is not what one might call conclusive, but perhaps a litmus test for the individual viewer as to whether or not they'll exit with hope or dread for what's to come. And regardless, when you take a step back, 'Guinea Fowl' cements the exciting arrival of a true filmmaker.
'On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,' an A24 release in theaters Friday, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for 'thematic material, sexual abuse, suggestive references and some drug use.' Running time: 95 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

I Didn't Expect to Be Into J.Lo's New Movie—But The Trailer Changed My Mind

The trailer for Kiss of the Spider Woman just dropped—and yes, you're going to want to see it. But first, a little backstory. In this new film adaptation, Kiss of the Spider Woman centers on Valentín (played by Diego Luna), a political prisoner who ends up sharing a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh), a window dresser imprisoned for public indecency. As they spend time together behind bars, Molina captivates Valentín with the retelling of a lavish old Hollywood musical starring his favorite screen siren, Ingrid Luna—played by Jennifer Lopez. Now back to the trailer, it's really good. is seen sporting blonde locs as she sings and dances her way through dreamy musical numbers. As someone who walked into this trailer knowing nothing about the story, I can confidently say this is going on my watchlist. And given that musical films aren't usually my go-to (Wicked being the exception), I was genuinely surprised by how into it I was. This one feels right on key. And I'm not alone. Fans in the comments are already hyping the film up, with some even calling it Academy Award-worthy. 'Looks absolutely PHENOMENAL Expect this to rule the Oscars,' one user wrote. Another added, 'Awards contender on the horizon,' while a third chimed in, 'Oscar nomination for 2026.' The musical version of Kiss of the Spider Woman made its Broadway debut in March 1993. It became a critical success, earning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and a win for Chita Rivera, who originated the iconic title role. The first film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman hit theaters in 1985. Now, the story is being reimagined by director Bill Condon—best known for Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast—with Lopez taking on her first-ever movie musical role. She's also behind the scenes as a co-producer, teaming up with her former husband Ben Affleck and his production partner Matt Damon under their Artists Equity banner. Kiss of the Spider Woman hits theaters on October 10. Want all the latest entertainment news sent right to your inbox? Click here. Austin Butler Battles A Bee To Protect Zoë Kravitz

Austin Butler is making waves, again. It's not because everyone's thirsting over those new Men's Health photos. And it's not because he got too stoned from an edible and awkwardly danced on stage with Bad Bunny. Austin's literally making waves because he protected his Caught Stealing co-star Zoë Kravitz from a potential bee sting. On Tuesday, at the UK premiere of the new Darren Aronofsky crime thriller, Austin and Zoë walked the carpet in complementary Saint Laurent outfits, and they looked very sweet — perhaps, too sweet. When a rogue bee tried to pollinate the actors as they posed for photos, Zoë and Austin attempted to wave the insect away from her face before it set its sights on the Dune 2 actor. Austin, Zoë, and Darren were visibly amused by the bee, who I'm convinced is Barry B. Benson from 2007's Bee Movie trying to make a comeback. The best part about this insect interaction is that it's not Austin's first rodeo with a bumblebee on a red carpet. In May, while posing for pictures during the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Eddington, Austin tried to save Emma Stone from a bee. When the bee buzzed into their space, Pedro Pascal laughed, Emma dodged, and Austin unsuccessfully tried to blow the bee away. Fortunately, Austin has improved his technique since the last time. Austin revealed what went down during a Tuesday, Aug. 12 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "Some things just happen, and you don't really realize what's happening in the moment," Austin explained. "[Emma] said, 'Bee, bee, bee!' And then I look, and there's actually a bumblebee that's attacking..." he told Jimmy. "And then Pedro starts laughing, and then I started blowing the bee away. That was my reaction." Austin admitted that he "didn't want to hurt the bee," and that's why the video might appear a little suspect. "It kind of looks like I'm blowing the bee at her. You know? So I was doing my best to try to get the bee to just playfully get away." In Caught Stealing, Austin plays Hank, a former baseball star turned bartender who gets involved in the world of 1990s New York City crime. Zoë plays Yvonne, Hank's love interest. Caught Stealing will be in theaters on Aug. 29. Do you love all things TV and movies? Are Sean and Allyshia Still Together Post-‘Bachelor in Paradise'?

Sean McLaughlin and Allyshia Gupta may have left Paradise together—but did they stay together? Ever since the two self-eliminated on the latest episode of Bachelor in Paradise season 10, fans have been trying to figure out whether the couple is still going I'm sorry to say that things aren't looking good for them. Let's review the evidence, shall we? First, there was Allyshia's Bachelor Happy Hour interview on August 7, where she talked about how things might have been different if she'd arrived in Costa Rica sooner. 'I do think that had I come in Day 1 or Day 2, like earlier days, I do think that Dale [Moss] and I probably would have ended up coupled up,' she said. Sean's response? After Bachelor Happy Hour posted a clip from the episode on IG, Sean slid into the comments to write, 'Oh interesting'...before reportedly unfollowing Allyshia and removing all photos of them together from his grid. Then, on August 12, when asked by Us Weekly where she and Sean stood following her comment about Dale, Allyshia said they were on 'great terms'—though she didn't actually clarify whether they were still a couple. As she explained, 'I can see why he might feel like he was a second option, which wasn't the case whatsoever. We have a real relationship and I think that's where he has his feelings hurt a little bit because it's more than just a TV show.' She also mentioned that she was 'actually FaceTiming him before coming into this interview,' so there's that! The next twist came on August 15, when Reality Steve posted a new batch of spoilers on Instagram, which included the fact that (supposedly) Sean and Allyshia are 'not together' anymore. But the biggest clue yet came on August 19, when Sean got his turn on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. During his appearance, he seemed to suggest that he and Allyshia tried to make things work post-Paradise but eventually split. 'When we got sent home, I was so excited,' Sean said. 'We were going back to Tampa together. We had talked about leaving in a relationship well prior to us getting eliminated.' He continued, 'I thought I found the most amazing person. I was incredibly excited about our relationship. I couldn't wait to get back to Tampa—' but! Just as he was about to seemingly provide an update on where he and Allyshia currently stand, host Joe Amabile cut him off, saying they couldn't 'touch on where your relationship status is now.' Mmkay! Stay tuned for more deets as we have them.
