A year on from his disappearance, Michael's mother Cristina Pittalis has told Sky News of her anguish over what happened to him.
"I'm trying not to lose my mind," she said as she recounted the last time she heard his voice.
"He was in a rush but absolutely clear in his speech, I didn't detect any confusion in his state of mind."
Michael, 26, vanished on 13 July 2024, just the day after he arrived on the Mediterranean island.

Cristina, who is from Somerset, told the broadcaster: "Human beings do not disappear from the face of earth without leaving traces unless … something extremely bad happened to them."
Her son had reportedly gone for a walk, and returned in a confused state and showing signs of heatstroke.
After this, he went for a second walk - from which he never returned.
His clothes and trainers were later found close by.
Michael's mum told Sky News is was "extremely unlikely" he would suffer heatstroke as he had lived on the island before.
It would also be "completely out of character" to wander off barefoot and leave his belongings behind, she added.

She has now moved to Sardinia along with her other son, 11, in an attempt to look for Michael.
Cristina, who is originally from Sassari in the island's northwest, said she is "extremely worried because there are no traces of Michael".
Although a local investigation into his whereabouts is ongoing, Michael's mum wants Interpol to step in to help with the search.
"It's a never-ending nightmare," she said. "There's no real accountability... I am here and I am broken."
Cristina said that "during the past 12 months, the area was constantly searched, through woodland, caves, mountains" - but nothing was found.
She is also calling for a woman from Jersey who is believed to have been with Michael in the days leading up to his disappearance to come forward with any available information.
One of her friends previously set up a GoFundMe to help with the search that raised more than £10,000.
The money was aimed at supporting various costs including travel, legal fees and awareness campaigns.
Cristina further told Sky of the impact Michael's disappearance has had on his younger half-brother Emanuele.
Emanuele's father died back in 2017.
"He's devastated," she said. "The three of us were extremely close, the two of them, they used to do everything together."
She added that for him "it's horrible, he lost his father and now he lost his brother."

Mum of Glasgow gangland boss Steven ‘Bonzo' Daniel has court case dropped after fears for her safety

Daniel, of the city's Robroyston, was at Glasgow Sheriff Court, but was the case did not go ahead with it being marked as "not called". A Crown Office spokesperson later confirmed: "The Procurator Fiscal received a report relating to a (then) 62 year-old female and an incident said to have occurred on February 18 2024. "After careful consideration of the facts and circumstances - including available admissible evidence - it was decided there should be no further proceedings taken at this time." The statement added prosecutors "reserves the right" to re-raise the case should further evidence become available. Daniel had initially been due to appear at court to face the charge back in April. But, she was not in the dock following fears for her safety after her home had recently been torched amid a high-profile underworld turf war. Daniel's home was targeted by thugs acting for Dubai-based mobster Ross 'Miami' McGill in April as part of an explosion of gangland violence across the country. Defence lawyer Ross Jenkins told the sheriff at the time: 'There are professional concerns about Ms Daniel attending court. 'She is on standby to attend should the court wish, but there are issues that you may be aware of.' Fresh twist in Scotland's deadly gang war as 'Lyons' driver ambushed in brutal machete attack The case was then adjourned until the July date before being shelved by prosecutors. Daniel's bungalow and her 72-year-old brother Norman's home in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, were set alight in late-night attacks. We told how her home was set on fire at around 1am on April 14. A nearby bungalow belonging to Norman also went up in flames. 3 Annette Daniel faced trial for shoplifting but has had the case dropped Days earlier a woman of 72 and a 12-year-old — both thought to be relatives of the Daniels — were battered when hoods stormed a flat in Milton, Glasgow. A second house linked to Annette in the city's Robroyston had a window smashed. Cops are also investigating blaze attacks and shootings in the capital. The mayhem has seen thugs targeting properties linked to the Daniel clan and jailed Edinburgh cocaine kingpin Mark Richardson, 37. Bonzo Daniel was left disfigured after a machete murder bid by Lyons crew rivals in 2017.

Nick Kyrgios troubled over Jannik Sinner reaching Wimbledon final after drug ban

Nick Kyrgios believes Jannik Sinner reaching the Wimbledon final is 'not a good look' for tennis after his three-month doping ban earlier this year. Sinner has enjoyed a superb run at Wimbledon this year, defeating Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals to set up a showdown with Carlos Alcaraz. It's the first time the Italian world No.1 has reached the final at the Championships as he looks to get his hands on a fourth major trophy. There is still some controversy surrounding Sinner – who failed two drug tests in 2024 – with Kyrgios one of his biggest long-term vocal critics. Sinner was suspended at all tennis competitions from February 9, 2025 to May 4, 2025 following a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) settlement. The 23-year-old twice tested positive for clostebol, a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass. WADA accepted Sinner's explanation that he was accidentally contaminated by a massage from his physiotherapist, who used a spray containing the banned substance to treat a finger cut. They ruled that Sinner 'did not intend to cheat' but insisted that he was responsible for his team's negligence, which ultimately saw him punished. After Sinner made his return at the Italian Open in May, he went on to reach the French Open final – where he lost to Alcaraz – and he's now reached a second Grand Slam final in a row after his impressive run in SW19. But Kyrgios has been left concerned over how Sinner playing in the Wimbledon final will impact tennis' image, especially after Iga Swiatek, who accepted a one-month ban after testing positive for a banned substance in November 2024, won this year's women's singles title. 'Do I think it's a good look for the sport that Swiatek and Sinner are in the final at Wimbledon after serving a ban? I don't think it's a good look for the sport,' Kyrgios told iNews. More Trending 'And I think people could agree. But I'm not going to sit there and talk about that [on commentary] in the final. They've been playing some incredible tennis. 'Sinner, he served a ban, which do I agree with? No. But he came back and he's been playing some excellent tennis. 'He didn't look like he missed a beat, and he looked like he improved during that period of time, which is still incredible, regardless of why he was banned.'
