Tesla owner wants harsher charges after vandal caught on video scratching car with box cutter
"It's frustrating. I don't know what he was thinking!" said James Lipari, whose Model 3 Performance Tesla was vandalized just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday on Northeast 59th Street.
Lipari had parked one street away from a nearby event when his Tesla's Sentry Pro app sent him a push notification.
"I started a free trial of an app called Sentry Pro, which gives you a push notification to your device if Sentry is activated," Lipari said.
Video from the vehicle's security system shows a man approaching, pulling out what appears to be a box cutter, and dragging it across the car's front end twice.
"The hood alone would cost around $1,200," Lipari said. After bringing the car to Tesla on Tuesday, he was told the repair cost could be even higher.
"He told me normally what they do is they'll repair not only the hood where it's damaged, but also the two other panels here, to kind of blend all the colors in. That's what makes it more costly."
The video also shows the man vandalizing a nearby truck in the same way.
"It just makes me think he's done this before," Lipari said.
Lipari filed a police report. So far, the incident is classified as criminal mischief under $1,000, but he wants it upgraded to a third-degree felony.
"It's important that people are aware that this gentleman is walking around not only with a box cutter in his pocket but also that he's just randomly targeting vehicles — and who knows what else," Lipari said.
The Miami Police Department is investigating.

Human skull found near iconic river
Partial remains of a human skull have been found in bushland off the Murray River near Mildura on the NSW/Victorian border. A man taking an evening walk along the Murray riverbank came across the partially buried remains of a skull near the entrance to Apex Riverbeach Holiday Parks about 5.30pm on Monday. Police were called to the riverbank where they established a crime scene and launched an investigation. Barrier Police District Inspector Wayne Demery from NSW Police told the ABC the early indications were the remains were not historic ones. 'The remains will be sent to Newcastle for a special forensic investigation,' he said. 'We've got a crime scene guard in place, until our crime scene section is able to attend and do a full examination of the scene.' Tesla driver dies in fiery crash in Monterey County
The driver of a Tesla sedan was killed early Monday when the car crashed into a tree in Monterey County and caught fire, authorities said. The California Highway Patrol said in a press release that the white Tesla was heading south on River Road north of Chualar River Road south of Salinas at about 1:41 a.m. when it veered left and off the roadway for an unknown reason. The car crashed into a tree and caught fire; the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. It was not known if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, or if the vehicle was in full self-driving mode, the CHP said. The Monterey County Coroner's Office was withholding the driver's identity until the person's family was notified. Dundas homicide victim identified; search on for shooter
Hamilton police have identified 25-year-old Zachary Shuman of Dundas as the victim of a fatal shooting in a Governors Road parking lot Sunday. Investigators are now looking for a suspect who fled in a blue Ford Edge. Police were called to the area of 77 Governor's Rd., a condominium west Ogilvie Street in Dundas, around 5 p.m. and found Shuman unresponsive in a parking lot near the building, said Det. Sgt. Sara Beck, of the homicide unit. Heavy police presence expected in area of Governors and Ogilvie. His grey Dodge Ram pickup truck was found parked in the lot that is next to Chegwin Park Path. Witnesses described a blue Ford Edge leaving the scene. Detectives have learned there was a brief interaction between Shuman and the driver of that Ford Edge in the parking lot of the Metro, at 15 Governors Rd. — less than half a kilometre away — shortly before the shooting, Beck said. Police remained at the scene of a homicide near 77 Governors Rd. in Dundas Monday morning. The shooting took place Sunday. 'We know an interaction occurred, what the content was, the conversation or why it was happening we don't know,' Beck said of the brief interaction at the grocery store. 'It occurred while both Zack and the suspect were in their vehicles.' From there both vehicles travelled to the nearby parking lot, but Beck would not say whether one driver was following the other or the order they arrived.
