Sabah dancers bring home ballet medals

Kota Kinabalu: The all-girls team from Ballet By Nora, who represented Malaysia at the Dance World Cup 2025 (DWC2025) in Burgos, Spain, brought home four international medals, making history for Malaysian ballet. Competing in eight categories – six solos, one duet and one group – the dancers earned the followings:

Coach Nora Ridzwan praised her students' graceful movements and strong connection on stage. 'Their connection on stage was like poetry, and their hard-work had paid off' she said. Tiara, who previously won gold in the Children's Folklore Trio at the 2024 finals, impressed the crowd with her performance of 'Kreasi Zapin Galit.' Despite dancing in pain, she finished with strength and determination. 'Tiara danced until her nails came off, but she never complained,' said her mother, Tuya, tearfully. 'She told me, 'I just wanted to finish strong.' Ten-year-old Ivana won silver in the Mini Ballet Any Style Solo category, shared that she felt nervous at first, but once she started dancing, she just imagined she was home. She felt proud to be able to dance in international stage. Coach Nora added, 'This double silver means more than just medals. It shows years of hard work, late nights, and strong commitment. Tiara and Ivana have inspired us all.' Ivana's parents, Dr. Natassia and Mr. Mohammad Ezral, said,'We're very proud of Ivana. She danced with joy, and that joy brought her this far. We're also happy to celebrate this moment with Tiara and her family.' These young dancers are now seen as ambassadors for Malaysia, showing the world the beauty of Sabah's culture and talent. Meanwhile, more Sabahan dancers won on the world stage when in the Children's National and Folklore categories, the Parhakow team placed 4th in the world in two events, namely; Small Group National and Folklore (Boya), just 0.1pc behind the 3rd place winner, and Small Duo/Trio National and Folklore (Nyebang). Team member Farish Hail Umar Farruq, 13, won a silver medal in the Solo National and Folkdance Boys category. He was accompanied by his mother, Maria Sularso, who was extremely proud and excited about the team's achievements, even though none won gold. Another Sabahan team from Tawau students brought home bronze, they are two students from SK Muhibbahraya, Tawau also made Sabah proud by winning third place at DWC2025. Muhd Syahmi Asyraf bin Sulaiman and Muhammad Ammar Asyraf bin Mohd Taufik impressed judges with their energetic Zapin performance titled 'Suara Siam.' Their success was guided by teachers Sarena Sanin and Basri Kambung, with support from headmaster Tuan Haji Sapri bin Haji Raupu, who said the win reflects the school's vision to help students succeed internationally. Ten-year-old dances her way to history
Ivana became the first Malaysian to win a silver medal in the DWC finals in Burgos, Spain. KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia made ballet history when a Sabahan ballerina won silver in the ballet solo category at Dance World Cup (DWC) 2025 finals in Spain earlier this month. Ivana Iman Mohammad Ezral became the first Malaysian to break into the top three when the 10-year-old stunned judges with her fun, fresh and graceful moves during the finals held in Burgos, Spain. She competed against elite dancers from ballet powerhouses such as Russia, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, China and the United Kingdom. Her mother Dr Natassia Sarah Mohd Danny said Ivana Iman is the first Malaysian to win the second highest prize in the ballet solo category in the DWC finals. She added that according to a judge, Ivana Iman's triumph was not just a personal win but a national milestone. Little winner: Ivana with her father Mohammad Ezral and mother Dr Natassia Sarah. Her silver medal and score of 89.3% was just 0.7% shy of the gold winner from England. 'To see such poise, technical excellence and storytelling at her age, from a country not historically known for classical ballet, is nothing short of extraordinary,' Dr Natassia Sarah recalled the judge as saying. The DWC, often referred to as the Olympics of youth dance, sees over 120,000 dancers from more than 70 countries competing through rigorous qualifiers, with only the top dancers advancing to the finals. The classical ballet solo is one of the most competitive categories, judged by former principal dancers and internationally renowned choreographers. Ivana Iman's achievement represents a breakthrough for Malaysia in global performing arts and positions her as a rising figure in the international ballet scene, her mother said. Prior to this, the eldest of four siblings had joined her first international competition at the Dance World Cup 2024 grand finals in Prague, the Czech Republic. Ivana Iman finished seventh in the soloist (any style ballet) category with a score of 89.4% against competitors from 52 other countries. Dr Natassia Sarah also paid tribute to her husband and Ivana Iman's father, Mohammad Ezral Ansari, for being the support system behind their daughter's victory. 'He is the superhero who juggles all her training and needs,' she added. She also thanked all the sponsors, including Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and the Sabah government, Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Fong Hin and Papar MP Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali for supporting and assisting Ivana Iman's journey. "All these sponsors greatly helped with tickets and accommodation to compete in Spain,' she said.

SMP 2025: Museums Dept Relives Nostalgia Of Over 20 Traditional Games, Sports
By Siti Azila Alias BATU KAWAN, July 19 (Bernama) -- The traditional games booth set up by the Museums Department at the National-Level 2025 Unity Week (SMP) celebration at the Batu Kawan Stadium complex has emerged as one of the main attractions, particularly among the younger generation. More than 20 types of traditional games and sports were featured at the booth, including sumpit, galah panjang, baling getah, boling kelapa, kaki hantu, batu seremban, congkak, teng-teng and dam ular - all of which reflect the rich cultural diversity of Malaysian society. Curator of the National Museum, Mohd Jamil Harun, said the games were not only on display but also made available for visitors to try out, allowing them to relive nostalgic memories while introducing the younger generation to traditional pastimes that are increasingly at risk of being forgotten. 'The younger generation who visit the booth are especially drawn to kaki hantu as well as kerchang, a traditional game of the Orang Asli community. Many of them are unfamiliar with how these games are played, so the secretariat demonstrates the proper way to play them. 'It's the same with lastik tin (slingshot) - we provide rubber slingshots like those used to target lizards. They don't know how to use them properly, which is why we need to regularly introduce these games through programmes like SMP, so that at the very least, they are aware of and appreciate our heritage,' he told Bernama when met here yesterday. Mohd Jamil said that in addition to allowing visitors to try out traditional games, his team also organised daily activities and competitions at the booth throughout the four-day SMP celebration. These included contests such as timbang chapteh, baling damak and sepak raga gelung - all aimed at reviving interest in traditional sports. To further engage young visitors and families, the booth also featured a series of interactive DIY (Do-It-Yourself) workshops, such as making batu seremban and kites, as well as crafting congkak boards. What made the experience more meaningful, he said, was that participants were allowed to take home the games they made themselves, creating lasting memories while learning about the country's heritage. He noted that such activities indirectly help instil interest and raise awareness about the artistic and creative value embedded in traditional games.

Batu Kawan Stadium Becomes Focal Point As PM Anwar Set To Launch Unity Week
BATU KAWAN, July 19 (Bernama) -- Now in its third day, the National-Level 2025 Unity Week (SMP) celebration at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds continued in a lively and festive atmosphere, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim scheduled to attend the launch ceremony today, marking the highlight of the event. Themed 'Harmony in Diversity', the ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10.30 am, and will also be attended by National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. This marks the third edition of the national-level celebration, following previous instalments in Kuching, Sarawak (2023) and Johor (2024). The event will also feature the presentation of the Progressive Rukun Tetangga (Neighbourhood Watch or RT) grant and the presentation of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation scholarships to deserving recipients. Adding colour to today's programme are a variety of cultural and community-centric activities that reflect Malaysia's rich diversity, including the 'Roti Canai Terbang ' contest and the all-ethnicities bridal show. The day will culminate in the 'Malam Irama Unity Sama-Sama Kita' concert, featuring performances by a star-studded line-up of Malaysian artists such as Datuk Awie, Stacy, Jaclyn Victor, Black Hanifah, Shila Zikir, and Suki Low. A total of 35 exciting activities await visitors throughout SMP 2025, taking place from Thursday to Sunday. Highlights include the Rumah KAMI exhibition, the Kadazan Dusun and Orang Asli villages, the Malaysia Tanah Airku exhibition, the 'Susur Masa' exhibition by the Department of Museums Malaysia, and the National Library Pavilion. In conjunction with Unity Week, various public services are also being offered directly to the people. These include discounts on summonses from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), as well as reductions in compounds issued by local authorities such as the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP). During his one-day working visit to Penang, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to attend several other programmes, including the launch of the MADANI Bumiputera Tunas Master Plan and the JKPSB Housing Project at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Campus in Permatang Pauh, near here, before officiating SMP 2025. After that, he will attend the groundbreaking ceremony and launch of Rumah Bakat MADANI SkyWorld Pearlmont in Seberang Jaya, before concluding his visit by officiating the groundbreaking ceremony of the Teluk Kumbar MADANI Complex in Bayan Lepas at 4 pm.
