Averted Bengaluru-like stampede in Hyd: Police
Hyderabad: A potential stampede was averted through swift and firm action after celebrations over Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title turned unruly near the state Secretariat here on the night of June 3, said the Hyderabad police on Thursday.
While fans across Hyderabad took to the streets to celebrate RCB's win, chaotic scenes emerged at certain locations - particularly near the Secretariat - prompting police to rush additional forces. Mild force was used to disperse revellers who were behaving in a disorderly manner, police said.
"In the RCB's IPL victory celebrations over 20,000 people gathered from Secretariat Road to IMAX circle which led to a massive traffic jam. Ambulances were stuck and the public faced inconvenience.
But the Hyderabad City Police responded swiftly & firmly and averted a potential stampede situation and safeguarded many lives. The Telangana State Police and Hyderabad City Police remain committed to ensuring public safety at all times," the Hyderabad City Police said in a post on 'X' on Thursday.
In a post on 'X', Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand said, "Watching and hearing about the stampede in Bangalore made me wonder where we are going! This is not a national team winning the World Cup ! It's a mere franchise called RCB which works on commercial lines and does not have a single Hyderabad player in it!? It's not even a #Hyderabad based team!" He said hordes of youngsters and revellers descended on Tank bund, NTR marg and Necklace Road (near Secretariat) and behaved in an unruly manner due to which traffic got jammed in all directions. He said seeing the situation and the hooliganism, extra forces were rushed and a lathi charge was done to disperse the unruly crowd.
"From a police officer's perspective, this unannounced celebrations on the streets by large gatherings are a big danger to public safety and may lead to exactly what we saw in Bengaluru. What if there were some deaths in Hyderabad too? Can anyone expect celebrations for RCB in Hyderabad city! But with social media playing a huge role across the country and the globe, perhaps police must be alert for everyone and everything in future! Is it humanely possible to do so - is what I am wondering," Anand said. A large number of youth took to the streets in different parts of the city on Tuesday night bursting crackers and celebrating RCB's victory. The police dispersed youngsters, who assembled near the Secretariat, set off firecrackers on the roads, and "blocked" traffic, ACP (Saifabad Division) Sanjay Kumar said.
"They were unruly. They were bursting firecrackers on the road and troubling others. Had we not controlled them then maybe there might have been a big issue here also," the ACP said. Videos circulating on social media showed similar scenes in Kukatpally area, where youth were seen climbing onto lorries with posters and others were dancing on the roads.
As celebrations disrupted traffic movement, police dispersed the youth.Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by six runs to lift their maiden Indian Premier League title in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night.

DKS' behaviour was dadagiri: Joshi
Mysuru: Demanding the resignation of the chief minister and deputy chief minister in connection with the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives, Union minister Pralhad Joshi censured DCM DK Shivakumar for his alleged behaviour, describing it as a kind of dadagiri on the day of the incident. Shivakumar acted like a bully all day, and he shouldn't continue in his position for even a moment. Both CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar should resign immediately, the minister told reporters in Mysuru. Pointing out the suspension of Bengaluru city police commissioner B Dayanand for allegedly denying security in writing, Pralhad Joshi asked if Shivakumar didn't call all fans to the celebration on his X account. Shivakumar went to the airport holding a flag to receive the team. "If there is command in the high command of Congress, let them first act against Shivakumar. The leader in opposition Rahul Gandhi goes around the world and talks about everything. Doesn't he know about this incident?" Joshi questioned. The Union minister claimed that even after three people died near Chinnaswamy stadium, the CM, deputy CM, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and IAS officers were busy taking selfies near Vidhana Soudha before the RCB team set out to the stadium. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "Isn't this an unforgivable crime?" he asked. The govt's decision to inquire into the incident by a promoted IAS officer was done in haste. Only after the high court took suo motu cognizance of the stampede were senior police officers placed under suspension to cover up the lapses, he claimed. Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda is an efficient officer. The state govt has given the reason that they haven't denied permission in the letter, but the CM himself tweeted about the celebration in front of Vidhana Soudha, and as a result, fans gathered in large numbers because of an open call, he said. "If Dayanand didn't give permission for the event, then why did the deputy CM go to the event? What moral responsibility will the CM take for the call made? Didn't Shivakumar feel ashamed to kiss the IPL trophy even after fans died?" he asked. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Stampede deaths: Outrage over missing political accountability as ministers go scot-free
Bengaluru: The govt is facing a storm of criticism over the absence of political accountability for the stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium which claimed 11 lives. Though the govt suspended three IPS officers and transferred another, mounting public outrage and opposition fire has centered on the fact that no minister has been held accountable for clearing Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL celebrations. At a press conference Friday, NDA partners BJP and JD(S) demanded the resignation of chief minister Siddaramaiah , his deputy DK Shivakumar, and home minister G Parameshwara. They accused the govt of making scapegoats of police officers while absolving themselves of responsibility for the tragic incident. "Congress' high command should think about sacking both Siddaramaiah and his deputy and bringing in new faces," said union minister HD Kumaraswamy of JD(S). "They and their supporters were jostling to secure political mileage from RCB's victory celebrations." He alleged that while Shivakumar was away attending a court case in Kanakapura, K Govindaraju, the CM's political secretary, "goaded him into holding celebrations on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha". "When his media adviser alerted him about this, the deputy CM rushed to receive the cricket team at HAL Airport. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo The tragedy unfolded from there," said Kumaraswamy. BJP state president BY Vijayendra lambasted Siddaramaiah, saying, "Bengaluru's police commissioner has been made the scapegoat in this entire episode. In the FIR, DNA (event management firm), RCB and KSCA have been named. In truth, accused No 1 is the chief minister himself, accused No 2 is deputy CM and accused No 3 is home minister G Parameshwara. Their sheer carelessness and negligence led to this tragedy. Despite deaths, Siddaramaiah went to a hotel to eat dosa, while Shivakumar participated in the victory celebration at the stadium. This is so insensitive." Opposition leader R Ashoka said: "The CM wants to hit a century by completing his full five-term, while the DCM wants to run him out. But, in the process, people of Karnataka have been out hit wicket." Kumaraswamy demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting high court judge and said BJP would consider pushing for a special legislature session. Amid the growing backlash, Siddaramaiah defended the govt's response. "They (opposition) are indulging in politics. I don't want to politicise this. We penalised those who were visibly responsible and found to be negligent in their duty," he said. Shivakumar said: "Let them (BJP) demand (my resignation). They are trying to politicise the issue over dead bodies. My chief minister was kind enough to announce a judicial inquiry. Action has been taken against some. An investigation is underway. The case has been handed over to the CID. What more can the govt do?" Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !
