PM orders completion of 100MW G-B solar project in one year

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to ensure the completion of the 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) within a year, reaffirming the federal government's full financial commitment to the initiative.
Chairing a review meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said the project would be executed on a priority basis to provide uninterrupted, low-cost, and environmentally sustainable electricity to the region, which frequently faces prolonged power outages.
The premier said he would personally supervise the progress of the project, which he described as a crucial step toward ending energy shortages in G-B. He further instructed that the infrastructure be built to withstand the impacts of climate change.

Emphasising the urgency of the matter, he said, 'Solarisation offers the most practical solution for remote regions like G-B, where 18 to 20 hours of load-shedding remain a routine challenge.'
PM Shehbaz also directed that electricity supply from both hydropower and solar sources be strengthened to help residents cope with extreme weather conditions and power disruptions.
To ensure effective implementation, Energy Minister Awais Leghari was appointed chairman of the Steering Committee overseeing the project. During the briefing, the meeting was informed that six solar parks would be established in Gilgit, eight in Skardu, and six in Diamer.
Additionally, solar panels would be installed on 234 government buildings in Gilgit, 179 in Skardu, and 66 in Diamer. A real-time monitoring system for battery backup is also being developed.

Officials assured that the project would adhere to international standards and that transparency would be ensured throughout its construction.
The project had earlier been announced by PM Shehbaz during his visit to G-B, as Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) also approved the project few days later.
Separately, in a meeting with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, the prime minister directed the authority to enhance coordination with provincial governments for effective response and rehabilitation efforts amid recent rains and flooding.
He called for the swift operationalisation of G-B early warning system in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change, stressing the importance of timely alerts in vulnerable areas to reduce risks during extreme weather events.

This year's celebrations also marked Pakistan's victory over India in the Marka-e-Haq in May. On the occasion, President Asif Ali Zardari conferred awards on military commanders and officials in recognition of their services during the four-day conflict. The day dawned with 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salutes in each of the four provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques after Fajr prayers for peace, solidarity, and prosperity of the country. The main flag hoisting ceremony was held at Pakistan Monument where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hoisted the national flag. Similar ceremonies were held in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and other big and small cities and towns. In a message, President Zardari said that nation celebrated the Independence Day with a sense of renewed pride and hope as recently the nation had reaffirmed its strength, resolve, and unity in the face of external aggression. "Our success in Marka-e-Haq and Operation Bunyanum Marsoos is a landmark moment in our history. It was a demonstration of unshakable national will, professional excellence, and united purpose," the president said. An impressive change of guard ceremony was held at mausoleum of 'Muffakir-e-Pakistan' Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Acting Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan also visited Iqbal's mausoleum, laid a wreath and offered Fateha. Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir received the Hilal-e-Jurat for leading Pakistan Army from the front and formulating war strategy, while Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz. Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, were conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, and DG ISI Lt Gen Asim Malik was awarded the Sitara-e-Basalat. Independence Day celebrated with traditional fervour
LAHORE: The country's Independence Day was marked with traditional fervour and a renewed pledge to work devotedly for the betterment of the country. The day dawned with 31-gun salute at the Federal Capital and 21-gun salutes at provincial headquarters. Special prayers were offered for peace, solidarity and prosperity of the country. In Punjab, main ceremony was held at Governor House in Lahore where Acting Governor Punjab Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan hoisted the national flag. Meanwhile, Corps Commander Lahore, Lieutenant General Fayyaz Hussain Shah, visited the Allama Iqbal's mausoleum. He laid a floral wreath at the mausoleum of the national poet and philosopher, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and offered Fateha. The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore marked Pakistan's Independence Day with a solemn and spirited ceremony attended by a large number of students, faculty members, and staff. The proceedings began with the national flag hoisting. UHS security personnel presented a guard of honour to the flag. At exactly 9:00am, Prof Rathore hoisted the national flag, followed by the singing of the national anthem. The venue resonated with chants of Pakistan Zindabad. Addressing the gathering, Prof Rathore said Independence Day is a golden chapter in Pakistan's history that taught lessons of sacrifice, unity, and devotion. 'This day reminds us that we must channel all our abilities towards the country's prosperity and public service,' he said. To mark the occasion, a tree was planted on the university premises as a symbol of growth and hope. Director General Public Relations, Punjab, Ghulam Saghir Shahid hoisted the national flag at DGPR Headquarters, Lahore, on Independence Day. He congratulated the whole Pakistani nation and said that freedom is the greatest blessing. It is the national duty of all of us to work for the development and prosperity of Pakistan, he observed. PM announces formation of force to supervise missiles
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the formation of a new military branch — the Army Rocket Force Command — in a move aimed at strengthening the country's conventional warfare capability in the wake of recent hostilities with India. Speaking at a ceremony marking the country's 79th Independence Day late Wednesday night, the prime minister said the new command, equipped with advanced technology, would enable the armed forces to 'target the enemy from every direction' and represented 'another milestone' in bolstering the nation's defensive posture. The formation of the Rocket Force follows a brief military confrontation with India earlier this year in May, referred to as Marka-e-Haq, or Battle of Truth. The conflict erupted after the 22nd April attack in Pahalgam and concluded with a ceasefire on 10th May. Sharif described the military engagement as a swift and decisive response by Pakistan's armed forces, claiming victory within 'three to four days'. 'India forgot that wars are not won with weapons alone, but with the spirit of the nation,' he maintained. The establishment of the new command comes shortly after the federal budget for 2025-26 fiscal year, announced in June, which included a 20 percent increase in defence spending — a rise widely viewed as part of a broader strategy to modernise country's armed forces. At the Independence Day event — held late on Wednesday night — the prime minister unveiled a digital model of the proposed Marka-e-Haq Monument. The ceremony featured a military parade, a flypast by the Pakistan Air Force Falcons, and participation by personnel from Türkiye and Azerbaijan. Fireworks marked the culmination of the event as the national anthem was played at midnight. Senior officials in attendance included President Asif Ali Zardari, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, as well as Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and other senior civil and military officials. The prime minister praised Field Marshal Munir, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu for their leadership during the conflict, calling it the beginning of a 'new Pakistan'. He also paid tribute to his brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, for defying international pressure in 1998 to conduct Pakistan's nuclear tests in Chagai, Balochistan. 'Our nuclear arsenal is not for aggression. It is only for defensive purposes,' he added. In a move aimed at promoting political unity, the prime minister also invited all political parties to join a proposed national charter, Misaq-e-Istehkam-e-Pakistan (Charter for Pakistan's Stability).
