Aaron Rodgers' pal has ‘no update' after QB's ring fuels wedding rumors
Even to his closest friends, Aaron Rodgers is a man of mystery.
During Tuesday's installment of his ESPN show, Pat McAfee peppered his co-host, A.J. Hawk, about Rodgers' personal life after the free-agent quarterback was spotted wearing a ring on his left ring finger while attending the Kentucky Derby festivities in Louisville, Ky., this past weekend.
Hawk and Rodgers, who revealed in December he is in a relationship with a woman named Brittani, both attended the annual Barnstable Brown Gala on Derby eve last Friday, and posed for photos with former Packers teammates Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Jimmy Graham, Corey Linsley and David Bakhitari.
'Shocking, you know, no update from the situation, not gonna lie,' Hawk said, referring to the dark colored ring on Rodgers' left hand.
Hawk explained that he didn't question Rodgers about the ring.
Rodgers said last month he's in a 'serious relationship.'
'He does look good physically,' Hawk said. 'He's definitely in shape and taking care of himself … he's in great shape right now.'

McAfee, who is friends with Rodgers, quipped that the quarterback posed with his left hand over his right hand 'on purpose' to show the ring.
On his Monday show, McAfee said Rodgers was wearing a 'clear wedding ring.'
McAfee asked Hawk if it was 'a wedding party' for Rodgers in Louisville, and Hawk said the group was 'a bit surprised' by it.

'It was not a wedding party from what we knew, but all of us were a bit surprised when we showed up as well,' Hawk said. 'And to tell you the truth, I don't really know. I don't know if I have answers for you when it comes to that situaiton.
'He is very private and mysterious when it comes to things like that, and this is definitely one of them for sure. He seems very happy, he's doing very well. He looks good physically, mentally, but not a lot of clarity on this situation, I'm not gonna lie.'
During an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show' last month, Rodgers explained he was focusing on his personal life while keeping his playing future open-ended.
'I was honest from the jump about where I was at mentally and some of the constraints I have in my life right now that warrant my attention,' Rodgers said at the time.

'I'm open to anything and attached to nothing. Retirement could still be a possibility, but right now my focus has been, and will continue to be, on my personal life. And that's what I've told the coaches. There's still conversations that are being had. It's all been very honest lines of communication.'
Prior to his romance with Brittani, Rodgers was engaged to actress Shailene Woodley. They ended their relationship in early 2022.

Belmont Stakes has plenty of storylines without a Triple Crown in play
Normally, the running of the Belmont Stakes without a chance at a Triple Crown winner makes the third leg of the series about as interesting as a television procedural — the Chicagos, FBIs or Law & Orders — in the last two minutes after the culprit has been identified and prosecuted. But not this year. The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes has about as many plot lines as a season of "The White Lotus." It's easily the best race of the year, and, yes, that includes the Kentucky Derby. Advertisement You've got your sentimental favorite in Journalism, whose stretch drive in winning the Preakness Stakes could make almost anyone a fan of horse racing. You've got your villain in Sovereignty, who kicked racing tradition in the teeth after winning the Kentucky Derby when his connections refused to enter him in the Preakness Stakes because of the short time frame — two weeks — between the first two legs of the Triple Crown. It killed any opportunity racing had to build a new fan base revolving around the Derby and a possible Triple Crown winner. You've got your fresh-faced wannabe in Rodriguez, whose last race was a win in the Wood Memorial. He was scheduled to run in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but a sore hoof forced him to withdraw from both races. His early speed and front-running ability likely means he'll be on the lead as the horses head down the backstretch. Add to that the fact that he is trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith, both Hall of Famers who know how to get a horse from gate to wire in winning form. And finally, you've got a wiseguy (professional gamblers) horse in Baeza, whose talent far exceeds his early results. He finished a strong third in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Santa Anita Derby behind Journalism. He is also trying to find a place in history for his mom, Puca, who has produced Kentucky Derby winner Mage and last year's Belmont winner in Dornoch. If Baeza were to win, he would be the first horse who has a dam who has won three Classic races. That's a record. Whoever finishes first, the victory is likely to be remembered as having an asterisk next to it. The Belmont Stakes, considered the test of champions because of its normal 1 1/2-mile distance, is being run at the less interesting distance of 1 1/4 miles. The reason is the race has been moved from Long Island's Belmont Park to Saratoga Race Track in Saratoga Springs, a suburb of the New York state capital of Albany, because of a massive rebuild at Belmont Park. The reason the race was shortened is because to have a 1 1/2-mile race at Saratoga, the horses would have to start on a turn, something the organizers didn't want to happen. Advertisement The starting positions add little clarity as to who might win. Sovereignty (post 2, 2-1 on morning line) should have no problem getting early running room, especially with Rodriguez on his immediate outside. Rodriguez (post 3, 6-1) and Crudo (post 5, 15-1) are expected to battle for the lead early. Crudo's last win was his last outing with a 7 1/4-length win in the Sir Barton Stakes at Pimlico. Journalism will be breaking from post 7 at 8-5 morning line odds. "He's been kind of the same horse since July of last summer,' Michael McCarthy, trainer of Journalism, told NYRA publicity. 'He does everything you ask a good horse to do — eats well, trains well, packs well. I thought the last six or seven weeks here, his energy has been the same throughout. Obviously, Saratoga is very good for horses. He seems reenergized up here. I'm looking forward to a wonderful renewal of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday." If either Journalism or Sovereignty wins, they will be the first repeat winner of a Classic race since Justify in 2018, who won all three Triple Crown races. Since then, no horse has won more than one Classic race, making it a 21-race streak. Of course, Triple Crown races are only for 3-year-olds meaning trainers start every year fresh trying to find prospective winners. Advertisement Racing is in desperate need of stars and the chase for the Triple Crown is one way of getting them. It's why there was such consternation when trainer Bill Mott and owner Godolphin, decided to skip the Preakness Stakes. 'You never know until they actually do it in a race,' said Michael Banahan, who heads Godolphin in the U.S. 'He always gave us that indication that he'd like to go long. And we thought the Derby as well and then finished up, from the top of the stretch to the wire in very good fashion and galloped all the way through the wire. Crudo is a 15-1 longshot to win the Belmont Stakes, which features an eight-horse field. (Seth Wenig / Associated Press) 'So, I'm with the Belmont this year at Saratoga. He just has to do the same distance again. So, I would anticipate that'll be fine for him. I suppose if it were a regular Belmont at Belmont Park, that'll be another question to answer going that far. It certainly looks like a mile-and-a-quarter was well [within] his wheelhouse in the Derby and anticipate that it shouldn't be any issue at Saratoga as well.' Advertisement The horse that is poised to pull the upset is Baeza, who has only won one race, a maiden at Santa Anita. His second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby would have normally been enough to get him in the Kentucky Derby. But Churchill Downs, in an obvious attack at West Coast races, lowered the point total because of a small field. Trainer John Shirreffs did not want to bring the horse to Churchill Downs, hoping there were enough scratches to get him in the race. Shirreffs was overruled by the owners so he stood on the backside at Barn 41 while hoping for an entry to the world's most famous race. The reprieve, and entry, came when Rodriguez was scratched because of a sore hoof. Baeza more than proved his entry into the Derby with a strong third-place finish. 'I think Baeza, week by week, he's developed a little bit more,' said Shirreffs. 'He's developed a little bit more. I see him, maybe, a little bit taller, a little 'stretchier' He seems to be holding his weight really well. And you can really get an image of him now is what he'll look like as a 4-year-old. So, you're starting to see him emerge.' Advertisement The most likely scenario is the winner of the Belmont Stakes will come from the four most prominent horses. It's more than possible that the 21-race streak without a repeat winner will be over. But they run the races to answer that question. It's a legitimate shame that Aaron Rodgers waited so long to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers – for no other reason than the entire country won't get to see him face his most recent team, the New York Jets, on a prime-time stage during the 2025 NFL season. Naturally, reunion/revenge games – apply your label of choice – are typically fun, and the league did slot Rodgers' first matchup with his original team, the Green Bay Packers, into the 'Sunday Night Football' window in Week 8. Yet nearly three years removed from his final appearance with the Pack, that contest could be more reunion adjacent. But the Jets? The team that summarily cut Rodgers, according to him, after he flew across the country for what turned out to be a very brief sit-down with new head coach Aaron Glenn in February? Not only will that Week 1 meeting be saturated in spice following the failed Rodgers experiment in New York, it will also provide the initial exit polling of who won what will wind up being a de facto trade of quarterbacks after the NYJ signed Justin Fields, Pittsburgh's opening day starter in 2024 and a player the Steelers tried to bring back this year, per reports. In words rarely uttered or written, I'm guessing that, in the aftermath of this veritable swap, the Jets come out looking like the better run organization than the Steelers. Admittedly, it's dangerous to draw conclusions from what occurs on NFL practices fields in May and June. However it's natural to glean impressions, and the ones Fields has been giving off in Florham Park, N.J., lately have been almost universally positive. '(H)e has this quiet confidence about himself. He leads by the way that he wants to lead, alright. His influence with the guys out there, I think you guys can see it. He can galvanize a group of men,' Glenn said earlier this week when asked about Fields' progress. Galvanize a group of men. Rodgers certainly electrified the Jets' fan base upon his arrival via trade two years ago. But his 2023 season was infamously short-circuited after four plays by an Achilles tear. And there was definitely no galvanizing apparent amid a 5-12 campaign in 2024, one that incrementally saw former coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas swept aside before the rest of the staff and then Rodgers were pink slipped. And now? As he typically does regardless of circumstances, Rodgers proceeded on his own timeline this spring − though, in fairness, he recently revealed that some people close to him are battling cancer and made him reluctant to immediately jump back into football. As the Steelers stood by and waited, the most notable thing that occurred with their otherwise pedestrian group of quarterbacks was longtime backup Mason Rudolph's recent appearance at a Donald Trump rally in suburban Pittsburgh – one that forced the Steelers, whose Rooney family ownership has long leaned Democratic, to respond to enraged fans who were upset when Trump was presented with a team jersey. Meanwhile, Fields, who was largely impressive while leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start in 2024 before coach Mike Tomlin's decision – some would call it misguided, as I did then – to pivot to Russell Wilson, has been all business so far with the Jets. (Ironically enough, that's probably for the best given Fields' current boss, team owner Woody Johnson, was the American ambassador to the United Kingdom during Trump's first term.) But let's stick to football, right? Again, it's June. But Fields has looked spry this spring, something Rodgers hasn't really been since leaving Wisconsin. How quickly we forget this is a guy who rushed for more than 1,100 yards with the flawed 2022 Chicago Bears, who made Fields a first-round pick the year before ... and then did next to nothing to help him, usually a stratagem reserved for quarterbacks the Jets draft. Lately, Fields, 26, has been busy organizing team-building events with his new mates, several of whom initially deified four-time league MVP Rodgers but didn't necessarily connect with him on a personal level. Importantly, on that very front, Fields has resumed vibing with star wideout Garrett Wilson, whom he played with at Ohio State. (Also, it's fair to say Wilson, who's now open to a long-term extension and wants to be 'a Jet for life,' was quite clearly not galvanized by his former quarterback last season.) '(Wilson) has been my guy for a long time now, so I really feel like we haven't skipped a beat out on the practice field. It's been great so far just being with him,' Fields said last week. '(W)hen I came here it's like we really didn't miss a day. He's been great.' Whether the Jets will be great in 2025 or the near future remains to be seen. But Fields seems to be in the optimal spot. After getting benched for Russell Wilson, who initially soared then predictably sank the Steelers last season, Fields is now with a team that is showing him the love after showing him the money – even if two years and $40 million are bargain bin bucks as it pertains to NFL quarterbacks. But he's reunited with Garrett Wilson and working behind a heavily resourced offensive line, a luxury he's rarely had during his four NFL seasons, and seems to have a chance to fully leverage his dual threat ability and potential. 'I think I can be great, and that's been the goal for me my whole life, my whole career,' says Fields. 'I think the sky's the limit for this team, for this offense. 'I mean, we have all the guys we need, we have all the talent. So it's really just going to come down to discipline and execution when the games come.' And the first one comes Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. ET, when the Steelers – and Rodgers – travel to the Meadowlands. '(I)f Aaron decides to play, it probably just makes many – if not all – the Steelers games a little more interesting,' league scheduling czar Mike North said last month after the NFL released its 2025 docket, even as Rodgers remained in limbo. 'We tried to play it down the middle. If we knew for certain that Aaron was going to be the quarterback of the Steelers, we might've done something a little different in Week 1 with the Steelers game." Still, when the topic is 'different,' there's no doubt the Jets and Steelers both look vastly altered in 2025 – and that seemed inevitable some time ago for Gang Green, spanked 37-15 in Pittsburgh last October and falling to 2-5, when Russell Wilson made his Steelers debut. Fields didn't play that night, and Rodgers was miserable (two interceptions). Forging ahead, it's hard to envision the Steelers, who clearly needed a quarterback, and Rodgers, who clearly needed a team, accomplishing much more than averting Tomlin's first losing season. It's reasonable to expect Rodgers, especially if he can remain healthy all season, to be a superior option to Wilson behind center – though it must be noted he has far less familiarity with the Steelers from schematic and personnel standpoints than he did with the Jets … and, aside from private throwing sessions with DK Metcalf, that's hardly changed this spring. As for Fields? He now seems to have a longer and more promising runway – one the Steelers might have had by keeping him in the saddle last season and allowing him to potentially flourish into the franchise quarterback they haven't had since Ben Roethlisberger was at his peak. Yet how ironic would it be if Fields fills the same role for the long woebegone Jets, who have been effectively grounded since Hall of Famer Joe Namath was at his peak five decades ago? Not that Glenn wants to apply that kind of pressure. 'Listen, obviously he's a talented player, and I'm happy that I have him as my quarterback,' the rookie HC said of Fields, who presented numerous problems when he was with the Bears and Glenn was in charge of the NFC North rival Detroit Lions defense. 'I really am,' continued Glenn, 'because I think the sky's the limit for this player, I really do. Listen, I'm not going to go out there and say that he's the next Joe Namath or anything like that. But I will tell you what, man, he's going to be a good player for us. And I'm excited with what he's going to do for us this season.' And it absolutely could be significantly more than Rodgers manages in Western Pennsylvania, where buyer's remorse could set in quickly. All NFL news on and off the field.
