Steve Coogan: ‘Fawning podcast fans should get a life'
'I do think the podcast bubble might be about to burst,' he said of the countless celebrity-hosted shows which have 'followers flock to them'.
Coogan has posed as his evergreen character Alan Partridge since 1991, when he was created for the BBC Radio 4 comedy programme On the Hour.
The comedian turned his hand to podcasting as the character in 2020, when podcasts exploded in popularity during the Covid pandemic.
Coogan, who writes the show with his long-time collaborators Neil and Rob Gibbons, explained: 'The podcast is stuff we want to do, that we're passionate about and we think is funny and relevant.'
He differentiates it from 'intimate chat' celebrity podcasts because every word of the show is scripted and rehearsed.
'People forget it's not real, it's all written,' Coogan said, adding: 'Even when Alan is going away on a train of thought, all that's been crafted so it's funny.'
The Telegraph described the first episode of the podcast as '25 minutes of sheer Partridge pleasure' in its review, saying Coogan's 'fictional alter ego is on top form'.
Political podcasts
Speaking about the crowded industry, the comedian said there 'used to be proper analysis' offered, particularly in political shows.
He explained: 'The problem with political podcasts is there are no solutions. There used to be proper analysis that was evidence-based with references and research.
'Now it's loads of people's gut feelings everywhere. They just like talking about politics, the game of it.'
While he didn't single any out by name, the actor said his focus remains on trying 'to get the balance between doing stuff that has some substance, without vanishing up my own arse, and doing things that are entertaining'.
He continued: 'If you go one way or the other, for me that's failing. I want it to be about something, but I don't want to be a bore.'

Former Big Brother star Charley Uchea has got engaged to a mystery man just weeks after she was 'left for dead' in a shock car crash. The reality star, 40, who rose to fame on the eighth series of Big Brother in 2007, shared the happy news on Instagram on Monday. The clip began with a blurry close-up of her huge diamond ring after being propose to by her partner, 43, who she has not named publicly. The announcement came just weeks after Charley was rushed to hospital after allegedly being 'left for dead' in a shocking car crash. She took to her Instagram Stories last month to detail the shocking incident, telling fans she had been hit by a truck. She got into the crash after spending the evening out and claimed that she was 'left for dead' on the side of the road after being 'knocked out'. Charley shared a video of herself in hospital wearing a neck brace. She had painful-looking red injuries across her eyebrow and cheek and claimed she could barely use her arms following the crash. She penned in a caption: 'Bless my nurse brushing my hair out, I can't really use my arms atm I'm so weak.' Alongside another picture of a smashed-up car, she added: 'Look at the damage this truck did just by hitting me, then leaves me [for] dead on the side of the road.' Charley also shared a photograph of herself out on the town before the crash and penned: 'Such a nice night before I ended up in the air lol and knocked out.' Charley, who celebrated her 40th birthday just days before on June 30, reassured her 251,000 followers that she would be 'home soon'. MailOnline contacted Charley for further comment at the time. Charley is best known for her 2007 Big Brother stint in the same year that Brian Belo was crowned the winner. She survived eviction until week eight, and was famously argumentative; rowing with Chanelle Hayes for ten minutes about how old Rihanna was. Charley was also attacked with a racist slur by fellow housemate Emily Parr, who was aged 19 at the time. Emily was ejected from the house in the early hours of the morning after she was heard using the N-word to Charley while they were chatting in the garden hours before. Both Charley and Nicky Maxwell, who was also present, were stunned at her use of the word however Emily swiftly insisted it 'was a joke'. The musician, 52, was caught on camera by a sneaky fan as he headed inside, but catching the lens the star made it known he had been seen as he mimed a drug reference. Pointing inside the cubicle he then alluded to taking cocaine before he headed inside. I've got a thyroid problem – Hashimoto's disease – so I can get a really hoarse voice.' In 2023 Liam revealed that he needed the joints replacing in his hip due to arthritis as a result of a longstanding thyroid problem. He then underwent a major hip operation. Before that in 2017 he was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition of the thyroid gland. In addition he also suffers with the skin condition psoriasis. Speaking about his hip issues in 2023 he said: 'My hips are f***ed, I've got arthritis, bad. 'I went to get it checked out and my bones are mashed up. The lady was going, 'Oh, you might need a hip operation, a replacement.'' He said at the time he didn't want the operation because of the 'stigma'. 'I think I'd rather just be in pain. Which is ridiculous, obviously. I know that. Just get them fixed. But it's the stigma, saying you've had your hips replaced. What's next?' Taking to social media he penned: 'Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk all went well and RESPEK to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound' He told MoJo magazine: 'When the weather's cold, my hips are like snap, crackle and pop. I need warmth. 'I can't sleep at night for the pain. Tossing and turning. So I'm on herbal sleeping tablets and they've saved my life. One of them, seven hours out, no pain, nothing. 'My new thing is Deep Heat. Caked myself in it on the knees and hips, the calves, then into the steam room for as long as I can handle it.' Liam, a keen jogger, was told by doctors to run less to help manage the condition. In the interview he also spoke about his psoriasis, saying he once met a fan who thought he had cocaine in his hair - but it was actually bits of skin from his itchy scalp. He said: 'I've got psoriasis, so I had obviously been scratching it during the day and there were little white bits and s**t. They were taking it out of my hair and putting it on their gums and putting it up their f***ing nose!' Taking to Twitter last February he said of having his hip operation: 'Morning Rastas so I had my Hip operation last wk [week] all went well and RESPEK [respect] to all the doctors n nurses who looked after me Big shout out to the A team for getting us home safe n sound. 'You know who you are and Florence guru I love and adore you Riverdance here I come LG x'.
