Inside the UK's craziest festival with medieval taverns and futuristic techtopia
The 2025 Boomtown festival will run from August 6 to August 10 (SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) Boomtown might be the country's trippiest, mind-bending festival, but it's kept pretty meticulously under wraps. Beyond being a major genre-fluid music festival, Boomtown is known for its unique design, stages, characters and experiences grouped together into 'themed districts'. The 17th annual Boomtown, dubbed 'Power of Now' is set to take place between August 6 and August 10, 2025 at South Downs National Park. The 2025 line-up includes a mix of international stars and big names like Sean Paul, Sex Pistols and Rudimental, as well as infamous DJs Honey Dijon and Jyoty and literally hundreds of more acts. The festival organisers have declared Boomtown 'the largest interactive theatre in the world' and highly encourage attendees (aka Boomtown citizens) to 'explore different worlds and ways of living' by taking on characters and engaging with the set pieces. It arrives just as a forecast reveals the exact date a 39C heat plume will scorch the UK. This year's festival boasts 12 main stages and over 50 hidden venues with more than 60,000 people are expected to attend. The 2025 Boomtown festival is already sold out, but resale tickets may become available through the festival's Citizen-to-Citizen Ticket Marketplace. Below is a snapshot of six of Boomtown's themed districts. Pretty Irish city that is 'better than Dublin' but has hardly any tourists 'I switched my perfume to a cheaper alternative - and I've never had so many compliments' 1 of 7 "Will you connect to the mycelium at the heart of Botanica?" organisers inquire. If you're keen to tap into your ethereal fairy/earth goddess energy, this is the place to be. (Boomtown) 2 of 7 Area 404 is an industrial wasteland that is "a refuge for radical revolutionaries, lost kids and punks". In 2024 over 40,000 of Boomtown 'citizens' voted in Boomtown's election, choosing Area 404 and their district spokesperson; The Collector, to lead Boomtown. (Boomtown) 3 of 7 Boomtown has killed off Copper County - it's all about the tinsel town of Copperwood now. This is the place to be for all "aspiring celebrities" looking for glitz, glamour, and the promise of stardom. (Boomtown) 4 of 7 Metropolis is Boomtown's cutting-edge techtopia. Festival-goers are invited to transcend into the digital realm under the guidance of Aurora Venturestone, CEO of Betterverse(TM) - though there may be some negative 'side effects'. Big Love Festival founder dies days after marrying partner
Stu Housley was diagnosed with angiosarcoma in early July before passing away on July 28 at the age of 49. Despite his health worsening, he attended the Big Love festival he founded in Usk, Monmouthshire, and married his partner Jo in a five-day ceremony. The Big Love Festival took place from July 17 to 20. Set in Monmouthshire and just 35 minutes from Bristol and Cardiff, the event shone a spotlight on East African music, art, and culture this summer. A post on the Big Love Festival website said: 'We are devastated to have to announce the death of Stu Housley, one of Big Love's two founders and the festival's joint director. 'Stu had worked tirelessly over the last nine years to build Big Love from a small weekend gathering into the celebration of music and art it is today. 'He never paid himself a penny, and was motivated by his love of music, bringing people together and putting on a damn good party.' According to the post, Stu loved the technical challenges of hosting a festival, and was adept at almost anything, whether it was sound systems, lighting, plumbing, power or mechanics. 'Whatever the problem, he could always come up with a solution. He had a great imagination too and was always planning ambitious ways to make Big Love even more fun or spectacular. 'What really stood out about Stu, even more than his technical ability, was his kindness and generosity. He always went far out of his way to help anyone he knew in need, giving his time, advice and practical skills without hesitation. 'This kind and caring nature meant he had an incredible array of friends, of all ages and backgrounds, and bringing them together gave him so much pleasure. 'Some of the Big Love team were honoured to be able to attend the wedding of Stu and his fiancé Jo just after the festival.' The post continues to describe Stu as 'irreplaceable' and even though he won't be able to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Big Love Festival next year, his wife and young daughter will attend along with thousands of others to celebrate his hard work.

Dekmantel: who's on the line-up as the festival kicks off?
The line-up gets even busier. On The Loop, Call Super and Honey Dijon will be playing from 7pm and 9pm respectively, while Shanti Celeste opens The Selectors stage at 1pm and Steevio and Priori both play live sets on the UFO II stage. That's already a lot, but do make time to see East African DJ Kampire take over The Nest: her bass-heavy sets are a great way to spend a Saturday.
