Colorado Rockies minor league pitcher Eric Veras suspended 56 games following positive drug test
Veras was disciplined under the drug program for minor league players assigned outside of the U.S. and Canada.
An 18-year-old left-hander, Veras was 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA in five starts this season. He signed for a $125,000 bonus in January 2024 and was 3-1 with 3.80 ERA in 10 starts last year.
Veras was the ninth player suspended this year for a positive test, the seventh under minor league programs. Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar was suspended for 80 games on March 31 and Philadelphia Phillies closer José Alvarado for 80 games on May 25 under the major league program.

Justin Fields participates in 7-on-7 drills at Jets practice, 2 days after dislocating toe
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields participated in 7-on-7 drills at training camp Saturday, two days after being carted from the field with a dislocated toe. Fields threw passes during quarterback positional drills and then again in a session with wide receivers, including tossing a perfectly placed deep ball to Tyler Johnson for a big gain that drew cheers from the fans in the stands. Fields didn't participate in team drills and will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis. The Jets have their first off day from practice Sunday. 'I thought he did a good job in 7-on-7s,' coach Aaron Glenn said. 'And the thing is, he has a ways to go until we get him out there and we're going to make sure we keep the process going, keep the protocol going to make sure he's ready.' Fields sent fans and social media into a frenzy Thursday when he dislocated a toe on his right foot early in practice. He was carted from the field to the facility, where he had multiple tests before the team announced the diagnosis — relieving fears that it could be an even more significant injury. Fields watched practice Friday from the sideline while wearing his helmet but had progressed enough Saturday to take part in some of the practice. Glenn didn't think Fields, expected to be the starter in his first season with the Jets, would fall behind because of the injury. 'He's going to be just fine,' the coach said. 'He missed one day. He's been in meetings, so he's going to be just fine.' Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor continues to lead the offense during team drills while Fields is sidelined. ___ AP NFL:

Shelter worker is mauled to death by two dogs rescued from abuse and fighting ring
A shelter worker was mauled to death by two rescue animals saved from a dog-fighting ring. Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, died this month at Second Chance Animal Alliance in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, during the attack, according to WREG. 'A dog was already in a pen and he was trying to put another dog in there and the other dog tried to run out, and he tried to hold him off with his foot and that dog grabbed his leg, pulled him down. And then the other dog jumped in with him. One of them was a pit, and the other was a pit mixed breed, and they killed him. They got it all on tape down there,' friend Dudley Woods told the outlet. The two dogs that attacked were at the shelter after being taken in a court-ordered seizure in an investigation into abuse and dog fighting, Yalobusha County Sheriff Jermain Gooch told the North Mississippi Herald. Police who responded to the scene had to shoot one dog dead to reach Phillips. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other dog was euthanized. Phillips had worked at the shelter for two years, according to WREG. 'His quiet and caring demeanor helped him foster a love for animals and he remarked that he often felt more comfortable around his pets than around people, perhaps recalling the time he spent with Eon, his beloved childhood dog,' his obituary read. He had also worked at a bakery and a Piggy Wiggly in recent years, according to the obituary. Phillips loved watching social media videos - including seeing people's reactions to old TV shows and movies when being shown them for the first time. The 57-year-old was a regular attendee at Sylva Rena Baptist Church, his obituary stated. 'Quiet, caring, and unassuming, Cliff never met a stranger. He loved people. Cliff enjoyed meeting people and swapping stories about their past experiences and sharing details of his own,' the obituary stated. 'He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.' It's unclear what led the dogs to launch into their attack. The shelter released a statement in the wake of Phillips' death. 'It has been one week since the death at the shelter of our friend and employee Cliff Phillips,' it read. 'Alongside his family and many friends, we are devastated by this loss. While we cannot address every question or rumor we have seen over this past week, we have cooperated with local officials. 'Please know that we take the safety and security of our volunteers and employees seriously. We are proud of the work we do in our community and will remain vigilant as we continue to do it.' The victim's older brother, Charles, told WREG that his brother loved animals but he wondered if more could have been done. 'I went out and picked his vehicle up and his last paycheck, but she said, 'I'm sorry I have no words for it,' but she said, 'I'm so sorry for your loss and everything,'' Phillips told the station. 'They've always done good. They've took a lot of strays and puppies and stuff from around here and they've always done good with that.'

2025 MLB betting: Nick Kurtz now a massive favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year
Coming off of a historic game on Friday night in which he became the first Major League Baseball rookie to hit four home runs, the general public has been introduced to Athletics rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz. This is coming off a week where the 22-year-old Kurtz was named the AL Player of the Week. The betting market has taken notice as well. Kurtz opened up far down the odds board to win American League Rookie of the Year at BetMGM with 80-1 odds. New York Yankees outfielder Jasson Dominguez opened as the favorite at +600. It wasn't all smooth sailing for Kurtz, as Yahoo's Jordan Shusterman detailed in this article, as he went through and 0-for-21 skid in May before breaking out and becoming the best hitter in baseball in July. On June 14, Kurtz was down to 14-1 odds (tied for the second-best odds), but still a massive underdog to his Athletics teammate Jacob Wilson, who was -1000 to win the AL ROY. That equates to roughly a 90.9% chance to win the award. Even five days ago on July 21, Wilson was the +100 favorite at BetMGM and Kurtz was second at +160. Wilson had second-most wagers (11%, behind the Royals' Jac Caglionone) and by far the most money of any player at 33%. Wilson also represented the sportsbook's biggest liability on the award. But after Friday night's offensive explosion, Kurtz became the odds-on favorite for the first time all season and now has -2000 odds to win, an implied probability of 95% to win the award. It's an astonishing baseball — and betting — story, and one we'll be sure to follow throughout the rest of the season.
