Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns are once again the team to beat, with many PSL club coaches tipping them to secure an unprecedented ninth consecutive league title.
Since the 2017/18 season, the club has enjoyed an unrivalled period of coaching success under Pitso Mosimane, Rhulani Mokwena, Manqoba Mngqithi, and now Miguel Cardoso.
Cardoso, who guided the team to league glory during his short stint since December 2024, maintains a laser-focused approach. He said: 'We always need to push ourselves to achieve better as a team. Sundowns will continue to be a competitive side, but it will not be easy. The plan is at least to win cups this season, and the CAF Champions League will also be important.'
Sundowns' formidable squad, known for its consistency and masterful navigation of the season's fixtures, is a significant concern for their rivals. The challenge they pose is no small task, and teams like Orlando Pirates are gearing up to give them a run for their money.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, after a successful stint at Marumo Gallants, has joined Pirates, who have recently signed eleven new players.
'Yes, without any doubt, the league title will be our main target this season,' he asserted, emphasising his optimism after five weeks of intensive training.
AmaZulu FC, coached by Arthur Zwane, are also aiming to improve on last season's sixth-place finish. Zwane recognises the challenge of surpassing Sundowns but remains optimistic. He told reporters:
'Yes, everything favours Sundowns, but football is a funny game. There are a lot of teams that are extremely strong and will give Sundowns a good run for their money. Pirates are strong, and so are Sekhukhune and Stellenbosch. It's not going to be easy for Sundowns.'
Meanwhile, Polokwane City are looking to build on their previous two Top Eight finishes.Coach Phuti Mohafe emphasised his team's fighting spirit, saying:
'As Polokwane City, we will always fight for three things. We will want to survive relegation, and then we want to finish in the top eight or even challenge for league honours. It is going to be difficult for Sundowns if you look at the performance of Pirates, Stellenbosch and other teams in the MTN8.'

Cavaliers roar louder: Boland overpowers Lions in Currie Cup showdown

Boland Cavaliers flyhalf Ashlon Davids produced a commanding performance against the Lions on Sunday in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Boland Cavaliers showed their Currie Cup mettle on Sunday as they subdued the Lions with excellent defence and a powerful scrummaging and lineout performance to claim a vital 29-10 bonus-point victory in Wellington. After two good wins, the Johannesburg side looked a shadow of the team they had been in the previous games, losing the physical battle, faltering in the lineouts, missing numerous tackles, and spilling their ball at scrum time. It was their counterparts who looked more dangerous, and the shock win in front of their home fans will give the Bolanders plenty of confidence as they continue a bright start to the tournament. Next Stay Close ✕ Despite losing their captain early in the game, and copping a yellow card in the first five minutes, the Cavaliers started the game off well and the two tries through winger Donavan Don, who has become a try-scoring sensation early in the competition, put the side in the driving seat. And they never gave up that dominance, taking a 15-5 lead into halftime. Last weekend, against Griquas, they also led at halftime but gave it up to eventually lose. However, this time around, the star-studded Lions couldn't muster up anything to disturb the rhythm of their hosts and the supporters at Boland Stadium were treated to a brilliant game by their side. Yes, there were plenty of errors that they can improve on, but despite that, they shut the Lions down. While it was an excellent team effort – something head coach Hawies Fourie will be proud of – a few of the Cavaliers players spearheaded the win. Eighth man Thurlow Marsh, who stole a couple of lineout balls, tighthead prop Dayaan van der Westhuizen, who emulated Richie McCaw with his ball stealing at the breakdown, and flyhalf Ashlon Davids also played out of their skin. The sharp attacking play of Davids, buoyed by Schreuder's speed behind the ruck, carved the Lions' defence up a couple of times when the ball came down the backline. Winger Xavier Mitchell and replacement Juan Mostert completed the try-scoring in the second half to seal the bonus point for the hosts. Cardoso urges Mamelodi Sundowns to refocus after opening-day Betway Premiership setback

Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso says they need to get their Betway Premiership title defence back on track after a disappointing result in their opening game. Sundowns drew 1-1 with Chippa United in the opening match of their league campaign at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday. Despite dropping two points, it was a huge result for Chippa, who will want to build on the momentum throughout the course of the domestic campaign. The same cannot be said for Sundowns. The result stung, as they were clear favourites for the game given their depth, experience, and title aspirations for the season. Cardoso is not crying over spilled milk, though. He has urged his troops to turn their focus to their next league game at Loftus Versfeld against AmaZulu on Wednesday night (7.30pm). Video Player is loading. 'But two points dropped in the first match or the last one are still two points. We need to finish with more points than our opponents. So, let's see the number of points that our opponents are going to get in this round. We have to fight in the next game. 'This game is already over, so we need to look ahead, fix our mistakes, and build the team. There are still many days left in the transfer market as well. Let's sort out our issues and see how strong we are, because we need to work and develop our squad.' Zuko Mdunyelwa reflects on the #BetwayPrem opener and looks ahead to the next game. 💪 #Sundowns #AreyengMasandawana — Mamelodi Sundowns FC (@Masandawana) August 10, 2025 One of the issues Sundowns must address is their transfer situation, as Peter Shalulile, Lucas Ribeiro, and Khuliso Mudau were notable absentees in the MTN8 opener. The trio have reportedly been pushing for moves away from the club this transfer window after attracting various offers from abroad. Shalulile, however, returned to the match-day squad against the Chilli Boys, although he was an unused substitute. Cardoso, speaking during his pre-match TV duties, said Shalulile was available and ready to contribute whenever called upon, while Mudau is also close to returning to the team. 'I think people are talking too much about Mamelodi Sundowns players,' he told SuperSport. 'Peter is with us, heart and soul. That's what everybody, especially Mamelodi Sundowns, needs to understand. So why not bring in a player who is heart and soul with us? 'Peter is always ready to play, always ready to perform, and his fitness is unbelievable. We believe in him, just as we believe in the others in the squad.' Regarding Mudau's absence, Cardoso said: 'I believe Mudau will be with us pretty soon — let's hope so.' In the absence of the trio, who played an influential role in the team's success last season, Cardoso has been using youngsters as impact players.

Zwane unfazed by Sundowns stumble ahead of Loftus clash

Arthur Zwane says AmaZulu will need to nullify Sundowns' individual brilliance if they are to take points from Loftus Versfeld. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane is refusing to be drawn into talk of an 'easier' assignment when his side face Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria on Tuesday, despite the champions dropping points on the opening day. Usuthu will travel to Loftus Versfeld in high spirits after beginning their Betway Premiership campaign with a 1-0 victory over newly-promoted Orbit College at the Princess Magogo Stadium. Zwane's men controlled the match from start to finish but needed a first-half own goal from Sekhoane Moerane to seal the three points. Sundowns, meanwhile, were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Chippa United in Gqeberha — a result that raised eyebrows given the Brazilians' dominance in recent seasons. The defending champions are also navigating uncertainty, with key players Lucas Ribeiro, Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau all linked with possible moves before the transfer window closes. Zwane has cautioned against reading too much into that slow start or the speculation surrounding their squad. 'We can't think because they drew their first game that perhaps it's going to be an easier game,' Zwane said. 'It's going to be a very difficult season for everyone. There will be fewer underdogs this season because if you look at our previous games against Sundowns, we lost due to their individual brilliance.' The Usuthu boss highlighted the match-winning qualities that Sundowns' stars have consistently produced against his side. 'The likes of Lucas Ribeiro and Peter Shalulile stood out for them in games against us — they made the difference. So this is why I say it's going to be difficult for everyone,' Zwane added. AmaZulu's recent meetings with Sundowns have often been close in general play, only for individual moments to tip the balance towards the Pretoria giants. Zwane knows that neutralising those threats will be key if his team is to return from Loftus with a positive result. His side's defensive performance against Orbit offered cause for optimism, with Keagan Allen and Taariq Fielies marshalling the backline effectively. The clean sheet was a promising foundation, but Zwane will be urging greater attacking efficiency, especially in a fixture where chances may be scarce. For Zwane, the bigger picture is that this season's league campaign could be among the most competitive in years, with smaller clubs showing less fear and bigger teams facing greater challenges across the board. Tuesday's clash will serve as an early litmus test for both teams — Sundowns looking to reassert their dominance, and AmaZulu aiming to prove they can go toe-to-toe with the very best.
