Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos recalls launch of Sacred Games, calls Indian entertainment market 'exciting'

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 8 (ANI): Nawazuddin Siddiqui's 'Sacred Games' was India's first original web series, directed by Anurag Kashyap and released on Netflix in 2018. The series is considered to have marked a significant shift in India's digital entertainment landscape, underscoring the potential of web series and streaming platforms in India. Netflix's Co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, recently opened up about the platform's expectations from the Sacred Games, as it was their first big web series venture in India. In a wide-ranging conversation with Nikhil Kamath on his podcast, CEO Ted Sarandos recalled the platform's early creative choices in India, particularly 'Sacred Games', India's first original web series. Sarandos noted, "It was very, very novel (Sacred Games), but I didn't realise that we were going to be introducing a brand new kind of entertainment to a country the size of India." The Netflix co-CEO also acknowledged the broader learning curve of the OTT platforms in India. Despite the early struggles, Sarandos said that he believed in India's huge entertainment market capacity before launching India's first original web series. "Early on, it took us a couple of years to get the product-market fit right, including payment systems and all those things. We knew that India was going to be a slower journey, but it's a great prize at the end of the day. Right now, you can see how fast Indian households are adopting fixed broadband, big-screen TV is growing - the addressable market in India is exploding in the next couple of years. So it's exciting," said Ted Sarandos at Nikhil Kamath's podcast. Sarandos also discussed the timing of the show's launch, saying, "If I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later? Maybe." However, this statement didn't sit well with Anurag Kashyap as he believed his directorial 'Sacred Games' was launched at the right time. Taking to his Instagram handle, Anurag expressed his displeasure, sharing a screenshot of a report on Sarandos' comments on Nikhil Kamath's podcast. In a post, he wrote, "He should have started with Saas Bahu... he would have done well. Which he is doing now. I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but @tedsarandos is the definition of dumb - that I didn't know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now." 'Sacred Games', starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, was widely praised upon its debut and marked a pivotal moment in India's streaming content landscape. Directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, the gritty thriller was lauded for its storytelling and production value, although its second season drew mixed reactions, and the series was not continued beyond that. Sonali Bendre recalls Salman Khan making 2 trips to New York during her cancer treatment: ‘It showed how caring he is'

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan's co-stars have often spoken about his humble nature. In a recent interview with ANI, Sonali Bendre, who worked with him in Hum Saath Saath Hain, recalled that while she didn't share a strong bond with him during the film, she later came to appreciate his caring nature when he kept checking in on her during her cancer treatment in New York. (Also Read: Salman Khan confirms film with Atlee is delayed, announces new actioner with Sanjay Dutt: Its action is on another level) Sonali revealed that she and Salman were not the best of friends while working on Hum Saath Saath Hain, adding that his mischievous side often got under her skin. She recalled how Salman would make faces at her from behind the camera, which offended her at the time. However, her perspective towards the superstar changed when she witnessed his concern during her illness. She shared, 'Salman is like a child, and everything about him is to the extreme — even his care and concern. The same person who was making faces behind the camera is the one who made two trips to New York to see if I was okay during my illness. He called up my husband, Goldie [Behl], and asked, 'Are you sure you've got the right doctors? You should speak to these doctors too,' and even shared contacts.' She added, 'He was just so invested and wanted to ensure everything was being done correctly. He wanted to make sure we had ticked every box. It was as if he had taken on the role of an elder from the fraternity, making sure everything was in place. Once he was convinced that we had chosen the best option available at the time, he was calm. But in doing so, he showed how sensitive and caring he truly is. I've had my issues with him, but I've grown to appreciate that side of him.' Salman and Sonali's chemistry in Hum Saath Saath Hain had impressed fans. While they haven't shared the screen together in many films, the two seem to share a sweet bond off-screen. Meanwhile, Salman will next be seen in an action film alongside Sanjay Dutt and also has a cameo in the Saudi film 7 Dogs. Sonali, on the other hand, is yet to announce her upcoming projects.

AB de Villiers shares tactical insight ahead of South Africas maiden WTC final at Lords

London [UK], June 8 (ANI): As South Africa prepares to play in their first-ever ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, former Proteas stalwart AB de Villiers gave valuable advice and tactical perspective ahead of the all-important clash against Australia. The final, scheduled to begin on June 11 at the iconic Lord's in London, marks a significant moment for South African cricket as they chase a maiden WTC title. While speaking to Star Sports around the historic venue, de Villiers emphasised the unique challenges posed by the conditions at Lord's, particularly the movement off the pitch and through the air that makes life difficult for batters. "Lord's is a tricky ground to play on. You've got the ball moving around more than most grounds in the world for a longer period of time," de Villiers said. "You're never in, and that's probably my best advice to the batters, to sort of respect the bowlers, whether it's the first over or the 67th over. You're never in, so just respect the game," he added. With Australia entering their second consecutive WTC final and South Africa making their first appearance, the stakes couldn't be higher. Australia, led by Pat Cummins, come in with the experience of having won the title in 2023, while the Proteas are looking to script a new chapter in their red-ball history. From a bowling standpoint, de Villiers stressed the importance of hitting fuller lengths to exploit the traditional Lord's assistance for seamers. "Lord's, you generally want to be a bit fuller as a seam bowler and try and get the best out of the conditions," he noted. "There's always a bit of seam movement for the seam bowlers. So I would probably urge my bowlers to bowl full and straight for as long as possible," he said. South Africa's pace attack, comprising the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi, is expected to play a pivotal role in swinging the momentum their way. With the unpredictability that Lord's offers, control and discipline with the new ball could define the outcome of the match. (ANI)
