Why is the S&P 500 rallying again and how close is it to the record?
The S&P 500 has been riding a steady upward wave, now within less than 1% of its record set in February. The rally has been fueled by easing geopolitical fears, improved investor sentiment, and better-than-expected corporate earnings. The benchmark index has recovered more than 22% from its April closing low when fears over U.S. tariffs spooked investors.
The return of market optimism comes as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, championed by President Donald Trump, continues to stir debate over fiscal policy and its long-term economic impact.
Are tensions in the Middle East easing and what's Trump's stance?
One key reason behind the recent calm in the markets is the perceived de-escalation in the Middle East. President Trump confirmed on Tuesday that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran is now in place, even though he expressed frustration, saying he's 'not happy' with how both sides have handled the situation. Despite these concerns, the ceasefire seems to be holding for now.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue. A U.S.-Iran meeting is scheduled for next week, which could further stabilize global markets if progress is made.
What do Wall Street experts say about the stock market momentum?
Not everyone is convinced that this bullish trend will last. Komal Sri-Kumar, president of Sri-Kumar Global Strategies, told CNBC's
Power Lunch
on Wednesday,
'The various macro factors that I'm looking at seem to suggest that there's no way this situation can continue.'
He pointed to several risks: ongoing global tensions, Trump's tariffs, and the potential fiscal consequences of new legislation. There's growing concern that fiscal deficits might widen under the current administration's economic plans, adding pressure on the long-term outlook.
What economic data are investors waiting for today?
Markets are closely watching weekly jobless claims data, set to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET Thursday. This report offers a key look at how the labor market is performing — a crucial factor in shaping Fed policy and investor expectations. A stronger-than-expected number could boost confidence, while a weak showing might add pressure on stocks.
Can stock futures lead to a new S&P 500 record?
With stock futures ticking higher, all eyes are on whether the S&P 500 can break through its February peak. While recent gains are encouraging, concerns about global politics, U.S. fiscal health, and corporate performance still loom.
Investors should remain alert as key earnings and data releases continue to shape the market's next move. Whether this rally can hold or falter will depend on how the economy and policy decisions play out in the coming weeks — and how much risk appetite investors still have left.
FAQs:
Q1: Why are stock futures rising today?
Stock futures are up due to easing global tensions and upcoming economic data.
Q2: How close is the S&P 500 to its record high?
The S&P 500 is now within 1% of its all-time peak.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff on AI killing jobs, CEOs should make sure that their...
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly growing and also reshaping the corporate landscape. Recently, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff talked about the impact of AI on jobs. Benioff revealed that AI is already handling a lot of workload at Salesforce. Along with this, the Salesforce CEO also emphasised that the CEOs or business leaders now have the responsibility to make sure that their 'values are in the right place' as they move ahead with the transformation. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Benioff revealed that presently the AI agents are performing "30% to 50% of all the work" at Salesforce. The AI agents are easily handling functions like software engineering and customer service. He termed this shift a " digital labor revolution ," noting that AI's accuracy in these tasks can reach as high as 93% for Salesforce. Benioff adds that this adoption is showing 'amazing results' and 'it also enable the human employees to focus on most nuanced issues and customer relationships,' added Benioff. This means that AI will take over most of the jobs in coming future and human employees will either have to adapt for the new working system or will be forced to move on. However, Benioff also adds that it is now the CEOs to ensure that their "values are in the right place. Salesforce CEO believes that although AI is taking over a lot of jobs and is also replacing human roles, but it is now the responsibility of business leaders to ensure ethical and moral considerations of this deployment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 & 3 BHK Homes Near Padur, OMR Starting @ ₹72.50 Lakh* TVS Emerald Undo Salesforce fires around 1,000 employees earlier this year Earlier this year, Salesforce fired around 1,000 employees, while simultaneously hiring for roles focused on selling its AI agent platform, Agentforce . India, Russia defence ministers talk on S-400 air defence system deliveries and future missile supply
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held high-level talks with his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov on 26 June, on the sidelines of the SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Qingdao, China. This wasn't just a formal meeting—it came at a time when India is under pressure to modernise its military quickly and decisively. The two ministers discussed a wide range of subjects, including the regional security situation, cross-border terrorism , and a growing list of bilateral defence priorities. Singh later posted on X, 'We had insightful deliberations on boosting India-Russia defence ties .' This bilateral engagement unfolded just weeks after Operation Sindoor, India's military operation in early May in response to Pakistani cross-border hostilities. One of the flashpoints during that operation was Pakistan's claim that it had destroyed an Indian S-400 battery at Adampur airbase. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now Undo Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly rebutted that claim. On 13 May, he visited the Adampur airbase and was photographed standing in front of an all-terrain transporter-erector-launcher from the same S-400 system. The message was unmissable. India's military leadership considers the S-400 Triumf vital to its national security architecture. These long-range air defence systems form the outer shield of India's integrated air defence network and are directly linked to the Indian Air Force's command and control system (IACCS). Live Events Each S-400 squadron includes two missile batteries loaded with 128 missiles. These can take down enemy bombers, fighter jets, drones, cruise missiles, and spy planes from distances ranging between 120 and 380 km. They are also equipped with long-range radar and mobile launcher vehicles. Russia promises full S-400 delivery by 2027 Under the $5.43 billion (₹40,000 crore) agreement signed in 2018, India was originally scheduled to receive five S-400 squadrons by the end of 2023. But the Russia-Ukraine war disrupted this timeline. India has so far received and deployed three squadrons—stationed in the northwest and east to deter threats from both Pakistan and China. In Qingdao, Russia assured that it would deliver the fourth squadron in 2026 and the fifth by 2027. 'As per Russia, the fourth squadron will now come next year, and the fifth in 2027,' a senior Indian defence source told The Times of India. Air superiority and the Su-30MKI upgrade plan The Su-30MKI fighter jet fleet—India's workhorse for air dominance—was another point of focus in the Singh-Belousov meeting. India is pushing for significant upgrades to these jets, including newer radars, electronic warfare systems, and advanced air-to-air missile integration. These upgrades are vital for the IAF to keep pace with evolving aerial threats. The need to accelerate such projects has only grown sharper following the events of May and the heightened threat environment on both western and eastern fronts. DRDO's Project Kusha: India's homegrown shield While strengthening foreign defence partnerships, India is also working to reduce long-term dependence on imports. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is currently developing a long-range air defence system under Project Kusha. The system is designed to intercept airborne threats up to 350 km away. In September 2023, the Defence Ministry approved the 'acceptance of necessity' to procure five squadrons of the system at a cost of ₹21,700 crore. The government aims to begin operational deployment between 2028 and 2029. Project Kusha is widely seen as India's response to global supply chain vulnerabilities and the need for strategic autonomy in air defence. Defence Minister Belousov acknowledged the importance of Indo-Russian military ties and condemned the 22 April terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. He expressed solidarity, calling the act 'horrendous and cowardly,' and reaffirmed Russia's commitment to deepening bilateral defence cooperation. This meeting, officials say, reinforced the long-standing military and strategic partnership between the two nations, now entering a phase where delivery timelines and domestic defence production must move in sync.
