Sudirman Cup 2025: India's squad led by PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, schedule, opponents and where to watch
The BWF Sudirman Cup Finals is the name given to the World Mixed Team Championships. The event takes place once every two years, alternating with the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals – which are the World Men's and Women's Team Championships respectively. The Sudirman Cup is often considered the pinnacle of a country's badminton depth, as it tests the depth across all five categories. Each tie in the Sudirman Cup Finals (named so because only the best teams in the world can qualify for the event) will consist of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.
Where's the 2025 Sudirman Cup being held?
As has been the case recently, it is China hosting another major BWF event. This time it is Xiamen starting from 27 April to 4 May. Hosts China are the defending champions as well, and by some distance the most successful team in the history of the tournament, having won it a whopping 13 times, South Korea have won it four times, while Indonesia won the inaugural edition.
What's the format?
The 16 teams are divided into four groups, with top seeds China placed in Group A and second seeds Indonesia in Group D. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout rounds, for which a draw will be conducted once more. Semifinalists will be assured a place on the podium.
How's India's group?
Tricky. India were drawn into Group D alongside second seeds Indonesia, European powerhouse Denmark and a tricky England unit. The squad has been significantly weakened too, by the injury-enforced absences of top doubles pairs Satwik-Chirag and Treesa-Gayatri. But, on the flip side, Indonesia and Denmark too are hit by withdrawals, so it could be still be a close shootout for the top two.
What's India's squad?
Men: Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Hariharan Amsakarunan, Ruban Kumar R., Dhruv Kapila, Sathish Kumar Karunakaran
Women: PV Sindhu, Anupama Upadhyaya, Tanisha Crasto, Priya Konjengbam, Shruti Mishra, Aadya Variyat
What's India's schedule and where to watch?
India vs Denmark, April 27: 2.30 pm IST
India vs Indonesia, April 29: 2.30 pm IST
India vs England, May 1: 2.30 pm IST
Where to watch Sudirman Cup 2025?
Although BWF events are telecast / streamed on the Star Sports network and JioHotstar it is not clear yet where the Sudirman Cup finals will be available in India. If there isn't an official broadcaster, matches will be available on BWF TV YouTube.

Patience and discipline needed for US Open at difficult Oakmont
Oakmont's fiendish layout provided a rain-softened preview Monday of what the world's top golfers will face when the 125th US Open starts Thursday. Thick rough was damp and dense for the first official practice round while greens and fairways were far more receptive than they are expected to be when the major billed as the toughest test in golf gets under way. "It requires patience and discipline," fifth-ranked Justin Thomas said. "If you just get lazy, like on any drive, any wedge shot, any chip, any putt, you can kind of look stupid pretty fast, especially at a place like this. "It's a great week to be in a great place mentally and very patient and picking our spots out there." Third-ranked Xander Schauffele, last year's British Open and PGA Championship winner, says golf fans enjoy seeing mighty players humbled. "I don't think people turn the TV on to watch some of the guys just hit like a 200-yard shot on the green," Schauffele said. "I think they turn on the US Open to see a guy shooting eight-over and suffer. That's part of the enjoyment." Oakmont offers risk-reward challenges seeking to tempt players into mistakes. "It's challenging myself to try and hit every fairway, every green, to try and be disciplined like through and through," Schauffele said. "There's going to be a point where you lay up into a bad spot, and it goes to laying up again from that layup spot. If you have a decent lie, you might try to take some risk, and that's part of the fun." Schauffele sees it as a perfect set-up for world number one Scottie Scheffler, who has won three times since the start of May, including his third major crown at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. "Take Scottie Scheffler," Schauffele said. "He's in the middle of every fairway. It takes a serious amount of discipline to play away from pins and hit really good shots to safe targets and that's what it takes to play well at US Opens." World number two Rory McIlroy, who won the Masters in April to complete a career Grand Slam, might be one who can risk using driver often. "You drive it like he does, I would pull that driver out as often as I can," Thomas said. "He hits it further and straighter than maybe anybody that has played the game." Thomas, a former world number one, says he would like to challenge for the top again, if Scheffler would only stumble. "Guys are playing unbelievable, like Xander did last year, like Rory is this year, but it's just that Scottie is also doing that. You can't really catch that if he keeps doing what he's doing," Thomas said. "He doesn't seem to be showing any signs of slowing down." Oakmont isn't done with forcing difficult choices upon players once they punch out of the rough. "The way Oakmont plays is you can sort of hack something, if you're courageous enough, and if you get the correct line and a couple of bounces, you could turn what would be a nightmare into a decent situation," Schauffele said. "It just puts an emphasis on hitting the fairway and hitting greens. If you're a premier ball striker, you'll be licking your chops. If you're in the rough, it's very lie dependent." Thomas said practice can only tell a player so much. "It's very helpful, but if I'm not hitting it where I want and controlling the ball like I want, it doesn't really matter if I've hit shots around the green or not," said Thomas. "I'm going to struggle if I'm not hitting it well." js/rcw

Justin Thomas: Oakmont can make players 'look stupid pretty fast'
Justin Thomas doesn't have a specific method for attacking Oakmont Country Club, widely considered to be one of the most difficult golf courses in the world, other than to maintain his patience. Thomas tied for 32nd the last time the U.S. Open was played at Oakmont in 2016. That year he carded three rounds of 3-over 73. The fourth was a 69 in the second round, which he called one of the best rounds of his life despite spraying his tee shots all over the course. "I think I hit four fairways, but I remember I hit seven greens and I shot 69. I chipped in three times. I was beyond exhausted when I got done," Thomas said Monday ahead of this week's U.S. Open. "I actually played with Brooks the first two days. I remember he was so pissed off. He just couldn't get over it." Thomas is anticipating long practice rounds this week, as players grind away trying to figure out every nuance of Oakmont's legendary greens. While he called them "some of the worst practice rounds of the year," Thomas also hopes that the lore of Oakmont gets in his competitors' heads. "Being perfectly honest and very selfish, I hope it psychs a lot of players out," he said. "It's a part of the preparation, like trying to go hit wedges or trying to get the speed of the greens or anything. It's getting a game plan for how you're going to approach the course mentally and strategically. "I understand this place is hard. I don't need to read articles, or I don't need to hear horror stories. I've played it. I know it's difficult. I also have faith that if I go play well and I'm driving the ball well and I'm hitting my irons like I know I can, I'm going to have a lot of birdie opportunities." Thomas, 32, hasn't enjoyed a ton of success at the U.S. Open, where his best finish was a tie for eighth at Winged Foot in 2020. He comes in ranked fifth in the world thanks to a win at a signature event at the RBC Heritage his first since 2022 and a pair of runner-up finishes this season. One of those came at the Truist Championship last month, but Thomas then missed the cut at the PGA Championship and is coming off a T31 at the Memorial. He arrived in Pennsylvania this week "shocked" to find how soft Oakmont's fairways still are due to the heavy rains the area has received. Thomas anticipates those receptive fairways and greens that still have some bounce in them will be much firmer come Thursday. And that's when the patience will need to come to the forefront. "If you just get lazy, like on any drive, any wedge shot, any chip, any putt, you can kind of look stupid pretty fast, especially at a place like this," he said. "I just feel like it's a great week to be in a great place mentally and very, very patient and kind of picking our spots out there." Oakmont has undergone some changes since 2016, when Dustin Johnson shot 4-under par to win. Thomas admits he doesn't remember enough to compare the conditions to that year, but he would be more than happy to replicate that Friday round four times even if it means going to battle against Oakmont's brutally long rough again. "I would prefer to not do that," he joked. "But if that means I shoot 69 every day, I'll take four fairways and seven greens right now." Field Level Media
