Michigan State hockey lands commitment from Swedish forward Eric Nilson
Michigan State hockey finished their roster moves on the defensive side of the ice with adding Ferris State transfer Travis Shoudy into the mix, leaving just one or two more forwards left to add to completely fill the 2025-26 roster. The Spartans have found their latest piece to the puzzle on Friday night.
Michigan State gained the commitment of Eric Nilson, a 2007-born native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but coming from Sweedish heritage. He is expected to join the Spartans roster in 2025-26. He will come to MSU from Sweden's J20 Nationell league as a member of Djurgårdens IF.
Nilson is the son of former NHL player Marcus Nilson, who played 10 seasons in the league, racking up 270 points. The son of an NHLer, Nilson has NHL prowess himself, being one of the top prospects in the upcoming 2025 NHL Entry Draft, and is currently projected as a second round pick.
A 6'0", 155 pound 18-year-old, there will most likely be a small learning curve coming to NCAA hockey, but he should be a plus player for the Spartans over the next few seasons.

Bateman, who had a big part in landing Ricks from the portal, revealed on Tuesday that Ricks played over 650-plus snaps during his redshirt freshman season in 2024, which is exceptionally challenging for any young player. Still, his improvement this month has been nothing short of impressive, calling him "one of the shining stars" during the preseason. At wide receiver, Elko, OC Collin Klein, and WR Holmon Wiggins deserve the credit for landing KC Concepcion and Mario Craver from the transfer portal. At the same time, sophomore Ashton Bethel-Roman has been another "shining star" due to his elite speed and fluid route running. Ricks, who has covered all three players in practice, is excited to see just how good Texas A&M's passing game can be, knowing the talent level has dramatically increased. "KC (Concepcion), he's really good, how he runs routes, Mario Craver, real twitchy guy, Ashton Bethel-Roman, a lot of speed, he can stretch the field." Elko and Bateman's trust in Ricks shouldn't be surprising to anyone knowing his talent level, while his 6'1", 188-pound frame, length, and impressive speed make him one of the top candidates to improve significantly, and is still on track to earn one of the two starting outside corner spots. Michigan State football included in ESPN's preseason bowl projections
One of the two experts at ESPN has the Spartans bowling this season. ESPN has released their preseason bowl projections, and one of the two writers included in the projections has the Spartans reaching the postseason this fall. That would be Mark Schlabach, while Kyle Bonagura has Michigan State failing to reach bowl eligibility for a fourth straight season. Schlabach has Michigan State landing in the nearby GameAbove Sports Bowl in Detroit. His projected matchup for the Spartans is against Ohio out of the Mid-American Conference. Michigan State comes into this season with a win total over/under of 5.5, signifying the Spartans will be right on the fringe of reaching the postseason. The Spartans went 5-7 last season in year one under head coach Jonathan Smith, but expectations have been raised this year with fans expecting a bowl berth from the Spartans. Michigan State opens the 2025 season next week against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium on August 29 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Wisconsin football transfer edge named to Comeback Player of the Year watch list
Wisconsin football transfer edge rusher Mason Reiger was named to the Comeback Player of the Year watch list on Tuesday. Reiger, who missed the entire 2024 slate with a knee injury, was one of 75 players across 51 programs to earn a spot on the preseason list. Including Reiger, a total of 13 players from the Big Ten appeared on the lengthy list. The 6-foot-5 outside linebacker joined Luke Fickell's program in December following four seasons with the Louisville Cardinals. In 32 total games from 2021-23, the Illinois native logged 49 total tackles (32 solo), 17 for loss, 8.0 sacks, four forced fumbles and three pass deflections. As a redshirt junior in 2023, Reiger tallied a career-best 22 tackles and 5.0 sacks. In a top-10 win over Notre Dame, he showed out with a season-high four tackles, two sacks for 12 yards and one forced fumble. As a transfer this winter, Reiger was considered 247Sports' No. 18 overall edge and a four-star prospect. His addition to the Badgers' defense, which accounted for 17 total sacks and 42 tackles for loss in 2024, will provide a much-needed boost in scenarios where Mike Tressel elects to hunt the opposing quarterback. Reiger projects to line up at right outside linebacker ahead of veteran Aaron Witt. Darryl Peterson, Tackett Curtis and Christian Alliegro are slated to accompany the first-year Badger as starters in the linebacker room -- a group that has traditionally performed at a high level at the center of the Wisconsin defense.
