‘KL Rahul didn't crib, he has seen such things': India star made short detour before England tour, tipped for redemption
KL Rahul made a strong return to India colours with a century for India A against England Lions, staking his claim for a key role in the upcoming five-Test series against England. Rahul has been a regular for India in ODIs and Tests, and with a century in the tour match, he has all but sealed a spot in the XI when India take on England in the first Test in Headingley.
The star batter has long been a vital figure in India's red-ball setup, and his responsibilities – not just with the bat, but also with leadership – are likely to increase as India tour England under first-time captain, Shubman Gill.
Throughout his career across formats, Rahul has shunted between various positions in the batting order. Even during India's previous Test series against Australia Down Under, Rahul played as an opener and in the middle-order once Rohit Sharma returned to the XI. However, with no Rohit in the Test setup any longer, it is expected that the Karnataka batter will have a more cemented role.
Rahul's childhood coach, Samuel Jayaraj, believes that mental toughness, developed over years of dealing with challenges, is what helped Rahul keep his head grounded and overcome the disappointment of not being part of India's T20I team, which won the World Cup last year.
'If you ask me, as a coach, this isn't surprising. He was always ready. He was also a wicketkeeper. He would smartly rotate strike, taking singles on the fourth, fifth, or sixth ball, then face the next over. He follows instructions really well. If you noticed in the Champions Trophy, his role was very specific—and he executed it perfectly,' Jayaraj said.
'In fact, despite having a very good ODI World Cup, he wasn't picked for the T20 World Cup. He didn't crib or get frustrated. Because he has seen these things as a kid. That's why he's so strong today both mentally and technically. And that's his biggest strength. He's matured a lot. He's been playing cricket at a high level for 10 years now. That experience shows. If you watch him now, he's a completely different player — much calmer, composed, and in control. For me, that calmness is what stands out the most,' he added.
Ahead of the England tour, Jayaraj met Rahul briefly and reiterated a lifelong mantra that he says continues to guide his ward.
"I always tell him just one thing — enjoy and become. That's always been my message, my mantra, even my password, you could say. You have to enjoy what you do. You have to be happy. If you're not happy, your body simply won't respond the way you want it to,' Jayaraj said.
"In England, a more and more matured KL Rahul will be seen."

US coach Mauricio Pochettino says 'We're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup'
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — A third straight loss didn't prevent Mauricio Pochettino from thinking big. 'We need to believe. We need to compete like today and for sure we're going to have the possibility to win the World Cup,' the U.S. coach said after the Americans lost their third straight game, wasting an early lead in a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly on Saturday. Jack McGlynn scored 59 seconds in for the U.S., which was missing many regulars as Pochettino revamped his roster following a dismal performance at the CONCACAF Nations League final four in March. Turkey took advantage of a sloppy defense as Arda Güler and Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored in a 2-minute, 20-second span midway through the first half. While the U.S. had 60% possession and outshot Turkey 13-11, the Americans dropped to 5-4 under Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination at last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. They have lost three straight for the second time in a year. 'Today, who is going to tell me, oh, we showed lack of, we showed lack of — lack of what today?' said Pochettino, a 53-year-old from Argentina who coached Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. Turkey inflict third straight loss on World Cup hosts USA
The United States suffered their third straight loss under coach Mauricio Pochettino as they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday. Pochettino, whose team lost to Panama and Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in March, was without several starters, including captain and AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic. Almost a year out from the start of the World Cup, which the USA is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino used the match to take a look at some of those on the fringes of his squad. One of those, Houston Dynamo midfielder Jack McGlynn, put the home side ahead in the second minute in spectacular fashion. The 21-year-old picked the ball up on the right flank, cut inside and then curled a beautiful shot from 20-yards out into the far corner. It was an intense start from a hungry looking USA, but Turkey soon found their footing and began to apply pressure on the USA back line. Arda Guler missed a great chance, unmarked in the box he leaned back and fired over the bar and then Orkun Kokcu forced debutant keeper Matt Freese into a fine save with a fierce drive. The visitors' pressure paid off in the 24th minute but it was gifted to them by USA midfielder Johnny Cardoso who, attempting to play out from the back, clipped a pass against Guler which ricocheted past Freese and into the net. Less then three minutes later, Turkey had the lead after the USA defence was unable to clear and the ball fell to Kerem Akturkoglu who drove home. Pochettino's men were much better after the break though and were unfortunate not to draw level - Max Arfsten headed wide from close range and Patrick Agyemang had a shot on target but the best opportunity fell to Malik Tillman. Substitute Tyler Adams floated a lovely cross to the back post but with all the goal to aim at, Tillman headed straight at Turkey keeper Berke Ozer. As the USA pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Turkey had a late chance to make it 3-1 but after a swift counter-attack Baris Alper Yilmaz screwed his shot wide. "For the first time for a few camps there were more positives than negatives," said midfielder Adams. "I think we have a lot of room for growth, if you asked me in March, I would say that we were far away but after a performance like that, there's a lot more positives that we can take away," he added. The USA face Switzerland in Nashville on Tuesday.
