Jim Irsay let his football people do their jobs
Much can and will be said about the late Jim Irsay, who died on Wednesday at 65. As it relates to one of the most important things any NFL owner can do, he let his football people do their jobs.
During a Thursday visit to PFT Live, Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy cited two examples: (1) the decision to draft quarterback Peyton Manning over quarterback Ryan Leaf in 1998; and (2) the decision to let future Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James leave via free agency.

As to James, Dungy explained that the Colts wouldn't have been able to afford various other key players, if they had re-signed James. Irsay (whom James selected to present him for Hall of Fame induction) didn't want to lose James. Irsay nevertheless didn't overrule his football specialists.
Regarding Manning vs. Leaf, history obscures how close the decision was. Manning was seen as the safe choice; Leaf was regarded as the high-ceiling gunslinger.
Irsay's gung-ho personality likely would have made him more inclined to roll the dice on Leaf. Especially since his friend, journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, urged Irsay to pick Leaf over Manning.
"[Leaf] looks strong & Manning doesn't -- or at least not strong enough to handle that 'Welcome to the NFL' business for two years without a world-class offensive line," Thompson wrote to Irsay.

That didn't sway Irsay.
Sure, there were times that Irsay opted not to ignore his football people but to fire them. One of his most notorious (and misguided) decisions came in 2022, when coach Frank Reich (who became the emergency replacement after Josh McDaniels left the Colts at the altar after Super Bowl LII), was fired and former Colts center Jeff Saturday became the interim head coach.
As it relates to the two fairly important personnel decisions, both worked out. Peyton Manning became one of the all-time greats, and in the first season without James the Colts won their only Super Bowl since the 1970 season.
There's an important lesson to be learned by owners who believe football is easier than it looks. Let your people do their jobs.
That means not only resisting the temptation to pull rank, but also being very careful about questions asked and comments made. Those employed by a multi-billionaire hope to stay that way. They listen for clues regarding what the boss wants. And those perceived or actual clues have real influence.

Russell Wilson's Wife Ciara Reveals Exciting Personal Update
Russell Wilson's Wife Ciara Reveals Exciting Personal Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ciara has been out and about the past couple of weeks. It's been a decade since Ciara performed in London, but her return at Mighty Hoopla Festival on Sunday night was anything but quiet. The R&B icon and wife of NFL player Russell Wilson headlined the festival this past weekend, alongside Ke$ha, who performed on Saturday night. Other people in the lineup this year included JADE from Little Mix, Jojo, Loreen and Erika Jayne. During her set, the "Goodies" singer stepped out in an all-white ensemble: a corset-style tank top, matching pants, a pair of Nike Air Force 1s, a dramatic fur coat and a large statement-making crown to top it all off. "Came back to perform in London after a decade and headline the Mighty Hoopla Festival!" Ciara wrote on Instagram a few hours after leaving the stage. "What an amazing feeling it was to hear all 20K + of you singing my songs with me! I will never forget this moment! 🫶🏽 🇬🇧." Ciara's previous performance in London prior to the Mighty Hoopla was on July 5, 2015, at the Wireless Festival. This event marked the conclusion of her "Jackie Tour" and was her sole European show during that tour. Before that, she performed in London in June 2009 as a supporting act for Britney Spears' The Circus Starring Britney Spears Tour at The O2 Arena. The 39-year-old also went to TikTok to celebrate this personal milestone, dancing to Brittany Spears' "Toxic" after finishing her performance. "After you just Headlined the Hoopla Festival with over 20 plus thousand crowd," she wrote as her caption. The week before, Ciara presented at this year's American Music Awards in Las Vegas. Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow retires after 7 seasons, 4 Pro Bowls
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit center Frank Ragnow, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who was key to coach Dan Campbell's Lions revival, announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday after seven seasons. Ragnow, 29, posted to social media that he has tried to convince himself he's feeling well enough to play, 'but I'm not,' he said. Advertisement 'I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don't,' said Ragnow, who was drafted 20th by the Lions in 2018. 'I have to listen to my body and this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life.' Ragnow battled through multiple injuries during his career. In 2021, following a season in which he played with a fractured throat, general manager Brad Holmes made him the league's highest paid center at the time with a $54 million, four-year extension. Ragnow earned second-team All-Pro honors in 2020, 2023 and 2024. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2020 under then-coach Matt Patricia, and then made three straight from 2022-24. 'These past couple of months have been very trying as I've come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I'm officially retiring from the NFL," Ragnow said. "The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process and I can't emphasize this enough how grateful I am for this team and all the fans. It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.' Advertisement Harrison Phillips, the eighth-year veteran defensive tackle with division rival Minnesota, raved about Ragnow when asked on Monday about the news of his retirement. 'He's one of the best centers I've ever had the privilege to play against,' Phillips said. 'I know that every time I had to play against him, I had to buckle my chinstrap extra tight and watch a lot of extra film.' Phillips said his teammates on the Vikings' offensive line would often ask him for tips about Ragnow's technique because his fundamental blocking skills were so exceptional. 'The way that he played was acknowledged amongst all players on both sides of the line of scrimmage,' Phillips said. ___ AP NFL: The Associated Press

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson should be getting contract extension very soon.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson should be getting contract extension very soon. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best players in the entire NFL in superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, and he could get a massive pay raise whenever the team decides to extend him. Advertisement The current highest-paid player in the NFL is Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who signed a four-year, $240 million deal back in September of this past year. CBS Sports' Joel Corry thinks Jackson could eclipse that annual $60 million mark by a solid margin. "Jackson should also make it clear to the Ravens that by waiting until next year to do a deal, the growth in the salary cap from 2025 to 2026 will need to be taken into account," Corry wrote. "For example, if the 2026 salary cap is set at $302.5 million, then the deal would have to be at $70 million per year because that would reflect the 34.56% salary cap inflation from 2023." While that number ($70 million APY!) may seem quite steep, which it is, there are not many people more deserving of that big of a contract than the Ravens superstar. Jackson finished this past season with 4,172 passing yards and 41 touchdowns on just four interactions. He was obviously also able to get it done with his legs with 915 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Advertisement The 28-year-old field general is just two seasons removed from winning the NFL Most Valuable Player Award, so there will not be much debate that he deserves to be paid more than Prescott when the time comes.
