Beneil Dariush before UFC 317: Training for Renato Moicano 'kind of stale' now
Beneil Dariush admits there is a challenge in keeping things fresh during preparation for his UFC 317 fight against Renato Moicano.
Dariush (22-6-1 MMA, 16-6-1 UFC) will return to competition for the first time in 18 months when he meets Moicano (20-6-1 MMA, 12-6 UFC) in a lightweight bout on the June 28 card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). At least he hopes that's what will go down.
The pair were initially scheduled to fight at UFC 311 in January, but it fell apart on weigh-in day when Moicano was elevated into a main event title fight against Islam Makhachev. The left Dariush without an opponent or fight, which was disappointing despite being paid his full purse.
Dariush, No. 8 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie lightweight rankings, said he understands why the UFC rescheduled the bout with No. 12-ranked Moicano. However, he's now been training for the same opponent since late 2024, and it's a little dull.
"You get kind of stale on it," Dariush told MMA Junkie Radio. "I've got to freshen up on all the homework I was doing. ... I don't really look at it as unfinished business."
The biggest driving force for Dariush going into UFC 317 is knowing that the 155-pound division is a new world of opportunity after Makhachev vacated the belt to move to welterweight. Ilia Topuria will fight Charles Oliveira to crown a new champion on the same card where Dariush competes.
Dariush said that's a good opportunity for him to perform and show he's still a real contender.
"I could be maybe two fights away," Dariush said. "If I have a good performance now, I beat a top five guy then I beat a top five guy, I'm in title contention. You never know. Sometimes one fight might be enough. It might take three. It will probably take two more fights to be honest with you."
As far as who will leave UFC 317 with the belt, Dariush said he's inclined to believe that Topuria is about to get his moment of glory and take the division into a new phase.
"I don't think I have a preference," Dariush said. "I want the best fighter to win. It's interesting to see if Ilia's style will translate from 145 to 155, because there is a different size, but there is going to be a different pressure in that size difference. Will he be able to apply the same pressure at 155? Will he be able to handle the grappling at 155? I feel like the answer is yes, but I'm looking forward to seeing it, especially against a guy like Charles. Charles is fantastic."

Andreas Gustafsson took back-to-back weight cuts in stride at UFC 316: 'That's life' Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: Andreas Gustafsson post-fight interview UFC 316 winner Andreas Gustafsson spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his unanimous decision victory over Khaos Williams. NEWARK, N.J. – Andreas Gustafsson met the media Saturday after his win over Khaos Williams at UFC 316. Gustafsson (12-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) took a unanimous decision from Williams (15-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) on the preliminary card at Prudential Center. He was an underdog in the fight, but also took the matchup on a week's notice. Gustafsson was set to fight a week prior against Jeremiah Wells, but had an opponent switch to Trevin Giles on short notice. Then Giles suffered an injury on weigh-in day that canceled the fight. Gustafsson got pushed to a bigger event at UFC 316, but had to endure the drama of changing matchups and the annoyance of back-to-back weight cuts. 'It's a long and never-ending fight week – the first week when you have weight, and then you have to start over,' Gustafsson said at his post-fight news conference. 'That's life. It feels great (to win).' Check out Gustafsson's post-fight news conference in the video above.

Davante Adams feels rejuvenated: Joining Rams was "exactly what I needed"
After eight seasons in Green Bay, Davante Adams now is on his third team in four seasons. Adams said Tuesday he feels 'rejuvenated' after signing with the Rams this offseason. 'I feel like this is what I needed just based off the vibe and the aura of the building,' Adams said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. 'And everybody's in a good mood. It's not like a dark cloud over the building. And I've experienced that quite a bit over the last few years. So, it's a glaring difference when you come into a building like this.' Adams has spent most of his career playing with Aaron Rodgers aside from the two-plus seasons he was in Vegas. But Aaron Rodgers signed with the Steelers this week, months after Adams signed a two-year, $46 million deal with the Rams after his release from the Jets. Adams compared the Rams to a 'college-type camaraderie.' 'It's just about ball. It's no other BS,' Adams said. 'And [they've] got a really good quarterback in here. Got a really good young team that shows a lot of promise and was obviously really close to being able to have a chance at the whole thing last year. So just knowing how hungry this team is and seeing the work that they're still putting in after having a year last year just kind of confirms that I'm in the right place.' Adams has not made the Pro Bowl since 2022, but he did have another 1,000-yard season and scored eight touchdowns in 2024. He has five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

Orioles Urged to Fix Major Adley Rutschman Decision
Orioles Urged to Fix Major Adley Rutschman Decision originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Baltimore Orioles seem destined to start setting the table for 2026. Despite a six-game winning streak and nine wins in their last 11, Baltimore's postseason odds are still bleak. The hot stretch, impressive as it is, might just be too little, too late. Advertisement Bradford Doolittle of ESPN put it bluntly, the Orioles will do what the Tampa Bay Rays did last year, look ahead. That means letting young bats like Heston Kjerstad sink or swim at the major league level. It means living with mistakes and growing pains in the name of long-term gain. But more than anything, it means finally addressing the elephant in the room: What's going on with Adley Rutschman? May 25, 2025; Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman (35) bats against the Boston Red Sox during the first inning at Fenway Park. Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images© Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images He's supposed to be the guy, the leader, the cornerstone. And yet something just isn't clicking. The power has dipped. The energy looks muted. Whether it's mechanical, mental or physical, Rutschman hasn't played like a franchise catcher this season. Advertisement Through 59 games, Rutschman owns a .695 OPS and a .374 slugging percentage, both career lows. His walk rate has dipped from 11.7% last year to just 9.1%, and the power simply hasn't shown up. For a player who was supposed to be the franchise's offensive anchor, this is more than just a cold stretch, it's a red flag. The deadline isn't just about who Baltimore should trade or keep, it's about who they are. If someone like their cornerstone catcher is slipping, that shapes everything moving forward.
