That's a story for another time,' Armizan told a press conference after officiating a national level Consumers' Festival (ConFest) at ITCV Shopping Mall, Sunday. PENAMPANG: GRS Deputy Secretary Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the days when a certain party or coalition in the peninsula can claim that it was responsible for making so and so an Assemblyman or the Sabah Chief Minister are over. 'We've moved on. This is our path forward. We do not want to keep hearing such claims. Past is past. What matters now is the direction we take. 'We can hear in their speeches that 'we (Malaya-based parties/coalition) made Hajiji an assemblyman, we chose Hajiji to be Chief Minister. When we are part of a national coalition or party, sentiments like that are inevitable. 'This is because to become an election candidate, the selection and the official letter of appointment (watikah) have to be issued by leaders from Peninsular Malaysia. 'Even the Chief Minister candidate was chosen from among state leaders who were appointed by the leadership in the peninsula. So whoever is picked will be expected to be loyal and obedient to the top party leadership over there (peninsula). It's different with local parties. 'The candidates are decided by, and the appointment letters issued by, the local party leaders themselves. The Chief Minister comes from among the leaders of these local parties, chosen by our own in Sabah. 'It's time we send a clear signal that the master is not there, the master is here — the ultimate master is the people of Sabah. Why did I use the word 'master'? That's a story for another time,' Armizan told a press conference after officiating a national level Consumers' Festival (ConFest) at ITCV Shopping Mall, Sunday. He was referring to an accusation by Perikatan Nasional (PN) Chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in Sandakan Saturday that GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor betrayed PN to support Pakatan Harapan (PH) following the last general election. Armizan said while it is the right of any individual to join national parties or national coalitions, GRS has chosen to chart its own course for the future. He also said Muhyiddin deserved thanks for stating there would be no negotiation or cooperation with GRS in the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). The Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living said Muhyiddin's remarks have eased the GRS position in Sabah. He said this development is beneficial because it was PN which publicly rejected working with GRS (in PRN17), preventing GRS from appearing to be arrogant if it (GRS) had been the ones to make such a declaration. 'Now that it is clear where PN stands and GRS doesn't have to issue a statement rejecting collaboration with certain parties — which could make us seem arrogant or conceited. Let others say it, and we'll just welcome it. 'It also makes it easier for us to manage sentiments among our grassroots members. 'As you know, previously it involved BN Sabah, and now it's PN, so this clarity helps us move forward and focusing on winning the support of the people, not chasing after alliances with other coalitions,' he said. He said there is no expectation that national leaders will fully understand Sabah's stance, but he made it clear this is the position (GRS moving forward) they hold today. Armizan who is also Member of Parliament for Papar said some from the peninsula only come to Sabah occasionally—once every three or four months — to talk about State issues and the needs of Sabah people. 'But we are here. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji and our local representatives and leaders are here all the time, consistently fighting for the rights and interests of Sabah. 'At the heart of our fight is our responsibility for Sabah first, the interests of our state above all,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Fahmi: GRS-Pakatan talks ‘healthy and productive', unity key to stability in Sabah

PAPAR, July 23 — Pakatan Harapan (PH) communications director Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said seat negotiations between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and PH ahead of the upcoming state election are progressing smoothly, with both coalitions aligned in their goal of ensuring continued political stability. Without going into detail, Fahmi described the ongoing talks between the federal coalition and Sabah's ruling bloc as 'very healthy and productive.' 'We all want political stability in Sabah, and I believe that is also the desire of both the prime minister and the chief minister,' he said, referring to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor respectively. Amanah vice-president Datuk Dzulkefly Ahmad added that unity remains the cornerstone of the coalition's strategy — not just for federal polls, but also at the state level. 'I'm one of those who firmly believe that the winning strategy is on our side. 'If we maintain unity, we can sustain political stability, ensure growth and prosperity, and respond to the people's demand for good governance,' he said. The GRS-led Sabah government under Hajiji has consistently expressed its preference to continue working with its national partners in PH, rather than contesting independently, citing political stability as a key factor. Hajiji has said the two coalitions will soon formalise their pact and announce the outcome of seat negotiations. Fahmi added that both sides recognise Sabahans' desire for continuity and progress, not political upheaval. 'The rakyat want stability, they want development, they want prosperity. That's why staying the course with a unity strategy is the best way to win — even in Sabah,' said Dzulkefly.

Kunak candidate up to Chief Minister: Usno division head

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: KUNAK: The United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) Kunak Division is prepared to leave the decision on the most suitable candidate for the Kunak seat to the discretion of the Chief Minister and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Usno Kunak Division Chief Hussein Ibnu Hassan said candidate selection should be based on grassroots majority sentiment, taking into account current issues being raised by opposition parties. 'The selection must also consider local issues, including any controversies involving specific individuals. To ensure the election machinery can effectively counter these issues, the candidate chosen should not only be popular, but also free from any perceptions or controversies that could undermine public support,' he told Daily Express, Tuesday. He said Usno is open to accepting any decision by the GRS Chairman regarding which component party will contest in any given seat, including the Kunak seat. 'We are open to the decision, but it is important that the individual chosen is not entangled in multiple issues or controversies, as that could affect the candidate's chances of winning,' he added. Hussein, who is also Usno Vice President, said as a GRS component party in Kunak, Usno maintains good relations with fellow coalition parties, including Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), even though there may occasionally be differences of opinion. 'Differences of opinion are normal in any party, but Usno is confident that minor internal issues among component parties can be resolved, unless they involve individuals entangled in controversies beyond the party's control,' he said. 'If the incumbent from Gagasan Rakyat is fielded again to contest in Kunak, we leave the decision to the voters during the election. Let them decide,' he said. He also said Usno had previously submitted a proposal through its President for an Usno candidate to contest the Kunak seat. 'Ultimately, the final decision rests with the GRS Chairman on which component party will contest here,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt taking steps to keep food price hikes in check after SST expansion, Dewan Rakyat told

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is taking heightened measures to control living costs given the higher food inflation rate, says Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying. She said the average food inflation rate is at 2.1%, higher than the overall inflation rate which was at 1.1% as of June. 'We expected... an increase in the cost of food or cost of living owing to the expansion of sales and service tax (SST). 'The government, through the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, will continuously monitor food prices to ensure (they) are controlled, especially essential items,' she said during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 23). Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) had asked the ministry to explain the measures taken to control food prices that did not reflect the inflation rate. Lim explained that while the food inflation rate is at 2.1%, some places in the country might have higher rates because of other factors. Earlier, she also said the government has outlined several assistance and subsidy programmes to reduce the burden on the people. She said this included higher Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah, which had increased from RM10bil to RM13bil, benefitting nine million Malaysians. 'The allocation for assistance under the Social Welfare Department for this year has also increased to RM2.9bil from RM2.4bil. 'The government has also allocated RM1bil to more broadly address the cost of living, including controlling the prices of basic commodities such as rice and cooking oil. "This includes the Payung Rahmah Programme, for which RM300mil has been allocated this year," she added. Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel for breaking news alerts and key updates!
