Disc Award conferred by outgoing Himachal DGP withdrawn

Shimla, May 31 (PTI) The order to confer the Director General of Police (DGP) Disc Award on 172 police officers in recognition of their outstanding work in 2024 was withdrawn on Saturday.
This came after DGP Atul Verma, who issued this order, retired on Saturday.
Verma, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, served as the DGP since 2024.
The order to confer the Disc Award was withdrawn and the post in this regard shared on Facebook was also removed.
Verma, who proceeded on leave earlier on Wednesday along with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Onkar Sharma and Shimla Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, returned on Friday.
The three were on Tuesday asked to proceed on leave after a meeting held here by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu with senior officials.
The discussion during the meeting focused on the issue related to the high court's order to transfer Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) chief engineer Vimal Negi's death case to the CBI.
This came after the DGP submitted a status report to the high court, questioning the impartiality of the SIT probe.
Sukhu had expressed his displeasure over the ongoing tussle between Verma and Gandhi and also with the additional chief secretary for bypassing the advocate general's office while submitting his fact-finding report.

Bengaluru: In the wake of public outrage over the tragic death of a child during a traffic check in Mandya, Karnataka's Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP-IGP), Dr. M. A. Saleem, has issued a stringent circular aimed at reforming traffic enforcement practices across the state. The circular, released on Monday, explicitly prohibits arbitrary vehicle checks, sudden roadblocks, and the practice of forcibly removing vehicle keys during inspections. It directs traffic police to prioritise road safety and ensure accountability during all enforcement activities. Key directives from the DGP's circular includes: No Random Checks: Police are barred from stopping vehicles solely for document verification unless a visible traffic violation has occurred. Stop Only With Just Cause: Vehicle checks must be conducted only when a clear offence is observed. During such checks: Barricading on highways must be avoided. Vehicles must not be stopped abruptly on main roads. Officers are prohibited from chasing vehicles or seizing their keys. The DGP has also given elaborate Mandatory Use of Safety Equipment: All personnel must wear reflective jackets, carry LED batons during evening checks, and use body-worn cameras to ensure transparency and safety. Technology-Driven Enforcement: Traffic management centres and the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) units are directed to adopt contactless enforcement using technology. Public Awareness Campaign: The police will soon launch an awareness drive to educate citizens about traffic rules and promote voluntary compliance. No Interception on Highways: Under no circumstances should speeding vehicles be stopped on national or state highways. Instead, enforcement must rely on Speed Traffic Violation Recording (STVR) systems for prosecution. Precautions at Check Posts: At least 100 to 150 metres ahead of any check-post, police must place reflective cones and warning signage to alert drivers in advance. Safe Night Checks: Where necessary, night-time vehicle checks must be conducted near traffic junctions or signal points, not in isolated areas. Law and Order Police Not to Block Roads: Police officers assigned to law and order duties must not carry out vehicle checks or set up roadblocks on highways. Any such operations for security purposes must involve traffic police coordination. The circular follows mounting concerns over unregulated and often hazardous traffic enforcement measures that have resulted in public inconvenience—and in extreme cases, tragedy. The new directions are seen as part of the state police's effort to ensure citizen safety without compromising law enforcement standards.

Contribute now New Delhi: An important witness in the case pertaining to the murder of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh has complained to the special court about receiving threats from people who told him not to identify the accused. The witness, a resident of Belagavi received the threats over a phone call on May 28 and submitted a written complaint on the same day, reported Deccan Herald. 'The witness received a phone call where he was threatened not to identify the accused. He filed a complaint before the court. Though he was disturbed and upset, he testified before the court on Thursday,' a source told the newspaper. A copy of the complaint and a memo by the special public prosecutor were submitted to the court. Well-known journalist and editor Lankesh, a household name for readers in Karnataka because of her sharp writing and bold views, was shot dead at her residence in Bengaluru late on September 5, 2017. The chargesheet in her murder case had said that the assassination was an 'organised crime' carried out by people associated with the Sanatan Sanstha, an extremist right-wing Hindutva organisation. The initial implementation of this provision by Trump in 2018 established 25% duty on steel and 10% on aluminium. The aluminium tariffs were increased to 25% in February 2025. During 2024-25, Indian exports of iron, steel, and aluminium products to the US totalled $4.56 billion, comprising $587.5 million in iron and steel, $3.1 billion in iron or steel articles, and $860 million in aluminium and related items. India has submitted an official notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO), maintaining its position to implement countervailing duties on US products in response to previous steel tariffs. The United States maintained its position as India's main trading partner for the fourth successive year in 2024-25, with two-way trade reaching $131.84 billion. The US contributes approximately 18 per cent of India's total goods exports, 6.22 per cent of imports, and 10.73 per cent of the nation's overall merchandise trade.
