Morocco Secures 33 Blue Flag Sites, Leads Arab World in Environmental Label

Morocco World12-06-2025
Doha – The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has awarded Blue Flag certification to 33 Moroccan sites during the 2025 summer season, according to a statement from the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection (FM6E). The sites include 28 beaches, four marinas, and one mountain lake.
The certification, which evaluates environmental management standards at bathing areas, places Morocco 21st globally among 50 participating countries. According to the foundation's data, this positioning makes Morocco the leading Arab country and second in Africa for Blue Flag certifications.
All 27 beaches certified in 2024 have maintained their status for 2025, with Sol beach in Tanger-Assilah province joining the list as a new addition. The foundation attributes this consistency to the ongoing collaboration between local authorities, economic partners, and community organizations.
Aguelmam Azigza mountain lake in Khénifra National Park has renewed its certification. Located between a majestic cliff and a forest of century-old cedars, this Middle Atlas jewel has undergone development.
Improvements include road access, sanitary facilities, camping areas, and reception services, making it the first natural lake in Morocco to receive this recognition.
Tanja Marina Bay has become the fourth Moroccan marina to receive Blue Flag status, following Saïdia (2018), Est Marina Smir (2022), and Al Hoceima (2023). With 1,400 berths, it has reportedly been the largest marina in the country since its 2018 opening as part of the Tangier port redevelopment.
The Blue Flag label is based on four fundamental criteria: bathing water quality, environmental information and awareness, hygiene and safety, and sustainable development and management. Surprise inspections are conducted throughout the summer to verify compliance with these standards.
All Blue Flag-labeled beaches are integrated into the 'Clean Beaches' program, which mobilizes 68 local authorities (supported by the General Directorate of Local Authorities), 25 economic partners, and over 100 local associations each summer.
The program collaborates with several institutional partners, including the National Laboratory for Pollution Studies and Monitoring, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, and the Ports and Maritime Public Domain Directorate.
This coordinated network works for nearly three months during the summer period to improve beach facilities, monitor sand and bathing water quality, ensure safety and health services, and raise awareness among vacationers about environmental issues.
For the 2025 cycle, the foundation received 45 beach applications, suggesting increased interest in the certification process among coastal municipalities.
Created in 1987 by the FEE, the Blue Flag has become the most prestigious environmental label worldwide. In 2025, 5,195 sites across the globe are part of the Blue Flag global network, with 95% (4,928 sites) located in the northern hemisphere.

Morocco Receives 11.6 Mln Tourists at End of July 2025

Morocco received 11.6 million tourists at the end of July 2025, a 16% increase against the same period in 2024, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy. These results confirm that the solid momentum has been maintained, the ministry emphasized in a press release, pointing out that 52% of arrivals are Moroccan expatriates. July's results also stress the sector's upward trend with 2.7 million tourists received, showing a 6% progression in comparison with the previous year, the same source added. This growth concerns foreign tourists as well as Moroccan expatriates, confirming Morocco's attractiveness among both of these categories. Specifically, foreign tourist arrivals reached 875,000, up 2% year-on-year, while 1.8 million Moroccan expatriates opted to visit Morocco during the same month, marking a 7% increase. On this occasion, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, noted that Morocco remains a favorite as well as a discovery destination for millions of tourists worldwide, adding that this positive touristic momentum continues, driven by local tourists, the Moroccan diaspora, and foreign visitors alike. This trend is part of a context marked by continuous attention to tourists' expectations and a lasting commitment to improving the travel experience, in line with the priorities of the 2023-2026 tourism roadmap, the press release concluded. Zuma's visit to Morocco was well-coordinated with the South African Embassy in Rabat

Estimated read time: 1' Jacob Zuma's visit to Morocco has sparked particular attention from the South African embassy in Rabat, as revealed in a diplomatic note sent on July 11 to Morocco's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The letter, obtained by our editorial team, reads: «The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Rabat presents its compliments to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Protocol Directorate, and has the honor to request that arrangements be made to allow a delegation led by former South African President H.E. Mr. Jacob Zuma to access the VIP lounge at Rabat-Salé Airport. Mr. Zuma will be visiting Morocco from July 15 to 18, 2025. Arrival: July 15 at 1:45 PM on Air France flight AF1258 from Paris. Departure: July 18 at 2:10 PM on Air France flight AF1259 to Paris». The document also includes the names and passport numbers of the delegation accompanying Zuma, as well as members of a preparatory team scheduled to arrive in Morocco on July 12, 2025. This official correspondence stands in stark contrast to a statement issued on August 6 by the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry, headed by Ronald Lamola, «has registered its strong objection and concern regarding circumstances around the recent visit of an eminent South African leader», referring to Zuma. In line with the ANC's position, the ministry also protested «the use of South African national symbols», during Zuma's meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. At the conclusion of the visit, Zuma expressed his support for Morocco's 2007 autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

Morocco Tops African Retirement Destinations

Rabat — Morocco has earned recognition as one of the world's recommended retirement destinations, according to the Global Retirement Report 2025. Published by Global Citizen Solutions, a consulting firm that specializes in investment immigration advice, the comprehensive study ranks the North African country in 24th place out of 44 countries evaluated. Notably, Morocco achieved an overall score of 81.51 points in Global Citizen Solutions' assessment. Morocco shines among African destinations Morocco further ranked in the top five African destinations for retirees, ahead of Cape Verde, South Africa, South Africa, Zambia, and Namibia. The country stood out for its straightforward entry procedures, with processing times of approximately two months. Applicants need only demonstrate a monthly income of $1,000 to qualify for a retirement visa. It also offers a path to citizenship after five years of residence, though dual nationality faces certain restrictions. This timeframe appeals to retirees who want long-term security in their new home country. Mixed performance across categories The report indicated that while Morocco excels in several areas, it faces challenges in others. The country ranks 37th out of 44 nations for international mobility and access to full citizenship rights. However, Morocco compensates for these weaknesses with strong performances in other crucial areas. The North African country achieves impressive rankings in economics (7th place), quality of life (16th place), and integration (24th place). These solid scores demonstrate its ability to provide a comfortable and affordable lifestyle for foreign retirees. Also, Moroccan retirement programs allow families to stay together. The visa covers spouses and minor children, making the country an attractive option for retirees who want to bring their loved ones along. This family inclusion policy helps Morocco appeal to retirees seeking the right balance between affordability, comfort, and simplified procedures. Citizenship challenges remain The report notes that several countries, including Morocco, Indonesia, and the Philippines, maintain significant restrictions on citizenship access through retirement or passive income visas. These limitations often involve strict conditions, extended residency requirements, and complex administrative procedures. Despite these challenges, Morocco's combination of affordable living costs, favorable tax policies, and welcoming atmosphere continues to attract international retirees looking for their next chapter abroad.
