Could the 2025 Genesis Coupe mark the return of a cult classic?

Yahoo11-02-2025
Before Genesis became its own stand-alone brand in 2015, the name was used for a specific model within Hyundai's lineup. Available as a four-door sedan or as a two-door coupe, the Genesis model earned a solid reputation for itself, thereby justifying Hyundai's decision to transform the name into a full-fledged luxury automobile manufacturer.
Since then, enthusiasts have been eagerly awaiting the return of a Genesis Coupe. While they have technically delivered on these ambitions with the GV80 Coupe, it's a far cry from the original's traditional, two-door proportions. The closest thing we've seen so far has been the gloriously orange Genesis X Gran Berlinetta concept.
Using generative text-to-image artificial intelligence, we take an imagined look at what a revived, true-to-its-roots Genesis Coupe could look like, incorporating current Genesis design language and imagining what currently-existing powertrains it could optimize. These images are for speculation purposes only and in no way depict any actual Genesis or Hyundai products.Offered in North America from 2010-2016, the Genesis Coupe was originally a model within Hyundai's lineup. Also available as a four-door sedan, the "Genesis" nameplate was used as a precursor for what would eventually become its own prestigious marque under the Hyundai Motor Company's umbrella.
The two-door, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe significantly contributed to earning the Genesis name the honorable reputation it needed for Hyundai to justify creating its own spin-off brand. It was available with either a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or a more powerful, naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6. Both power plants came standard with 6-speed manual transmissions, but various automatic options were also available.
Hyundai's Genesis Coupe also gave the brand an opportunity to earn itself some racing pedigree. The Genesis Coupe competed in various motorsport competitions, such as Formula Drift and the United States Touring Car Championship, which it won in 2014. In 2009, the Genesis Coupe set a new record for two-wheel drive production-based cars at Pikes Peak, a video of which is available on our site here.Employing the current Genesis design language, a revived Genesis coupe could feature signature double-stacked LED headlights and taillights, swooping lines, curvy haunches, and, of course, traditional two-door coupe proportions. Added styling elements such as an aggressive front bumper design, quad-exit tailpipes, and large-diameter wheels could further suggest its performance-oriented characteristics.
Pop the hood, and you'd likely find the same twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V6 used in the all-new GV80 Coupe, which produces a stout 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque–placing the Toyota GR Supra, BMW Z4, and Mercedes-Benz CLE directly in its sights. We'd like to imagine it would come standard with a wobbly wiggly stick and rear-wheel drive, though an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive would likely be available as add-ons.
Perhaps a more potent, track-oriented model could employ the e-supercharged mild-hybrid variant of Genesis's twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. With a power figure in the mid-400 range, paired with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic gearbox, its performance would be right on par with the Mercedes-AMG CLE53. This could be the first production Genesis model to bear the "Magma" performance sub-brand badge, as only concept vehicles have worn the name thus far.
Although a more affordable, four-cylinder-powered variant could also exist, the relative failure of the Toyota GR Supra 2.0 presents a solid case for offering at least six cylinders beneath the bonnet of this beautiful beast. That's not to say that a sporty two-door coupe is a recipe for massive profits in the 2025 market climate, but a revived Genesis Coupe could certainly herald the brand's performance engineering capabilities and would benefit from the pedigree of its potent predecessor. On the inside, the revived Genesis Coupe would benefit from a vastly superior cabin environment compared to its older sibling, thanks to the incredible progress made by Genesis in the past decade. Featuring superb upholstery materials and carbon fiber trim accents, the Coupe's cockpit would be more than ready to take on its German rivals.
Staying true to the original Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the revived model could see a 2+2 interior seating configuration, with snug second-row seating that's more suited to children rather than full-grown adults. Behind the cabin, the Coupe's trunk must be large enough to fit at least two sets of golf clubs or a broke roommate trying to sneak their way out of a twenty-dollar ferry toll.
The Genesis Coupe could give the brand a chance to earn some enthusiast brownie points, performance pedigree, and a generally exciting entry into its relatively sedate lineup. Updated rear-wheel drive chassis architecture is ready to go, and their parts bin includes more than capable powertrains, transmissions, and drive systems. So, what is Genesis waiting for?

3 moves GM made to navigate the tariff landscape

General Motors tapped its tariff-mitigation playbook the week of Aug. 4, inking three deals with new partners that will allow the automaker to better navigate this current landscape. One partnership aims to generate additional revenue, another should directly protect the automaker from import costs, while the third puts GM directly in the line of fire of tariffs, but only temporarily. Automaker partnership GM and Hyundai Motor announced on Aug. 6 the first vehicles the companies plan to jointly develop. Four of the vehicles — a compact SUV, a car, a pickup and a midsize pickup — are intended for retail sales and will support both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains. The automakers also said a co-developed electric commercial van is in the works. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service Shilpan Amin, GM senior vice president and global chief procurement and supply chain officer, said on Aug. 7 that the vehicles announced will be targeted at the largest segments in the Central and South American markets, as well as the commercial segment in North America. 'By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,' Amin said in a statement. 'These first co-developed vehicles clearly demonstrate how GM and Hyundai will leverage our complementary strengths and combined scale.' The truck, for which GM will be responsible, could be based on the platform for the next-gen Canyon or Colorado, proposes Sam Abuelsamid, vice president of Telemetry. 'When you have a partnership like this, the automakers try to structure it where each gets something out of it in terms of scale, components or manufacturing capacity,' he said. 'Some of these vehicles, most likely, will be built at GM plants, some will be built at Hyundai facilities, but ultimately will provide more scale, which tends to mean cost reductions.' If the van is based on a Hyundai platform and in North America, Abuelsamid said he would not be surprised if Hyundai constructed it at its plant in Savannah, Georgia. Battery deal with China GM plans to import electric vehicle batteries from China, Reuters reported Aug. 7. GM confirmed to the Free Press that the deal will function as a 'stopgap' until it can manufacture its own lower-cost batteries made with lithium iron phosphate chemistry in the U.S. alongside South Korean battery partner LG Energy Solution. GM would not confirm the specific company that makes the batteries, though Reuters reported that sources familiar with the matter believe it to be CATL. More: GM breaks EV range record with elaborate 2026 Silverado EV drive test 'For several years, other U.S. automakers have depended on foreign suppliers for LFP battery sourcing and licensing. To stay competitive, GM will temporarily source these packs from similar suppliers to power our most affordable EV model,' GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said in a statement. 'We're proud that we sell 12 EVs in the U.S. using domestically produced battery cells, and in 2027 we will bring LFP production to the U.S., further cementing our unique and resilient U.S.-based supply chain.' The batteries are slated for the new Chevrolet Bolt, which is planned to go into production in the fourth quarter of this year. Currently, there is no company producing lithium iron phosphate batteries at volume except for LG Energy Solution in its Holland, Michigan, plant, though that plant is focused on producing pouch cells for energy storage. Prismatic cells that are light on nickel boast another advantage ― in addition to a cheaper chemistry, the shape allows automakers to pack in more cells to a battery, Abuelsamid said. The pouch designs separate the cells through layers and limit how many cells rest in one pack. 'The pouch shape helps to isolate the cells, so in case ... you do have a defect or thermal runaway, it's less likely to spread to the entire battery pack,' he said. Automakers 'didn't realize how long the battery packs will last, so the module format helps with serviceability.' Of the total battery pack volume in modular systems, only 30% to 35% is devoted to active cell material storing energy, Abuelsamid added, because the box, the wiring and cooling components eat up the remaining space. 'When you get rid of those modules and go to a structural design, you can fill up that pack with cells. Or, conversely, you can also make a battery with the same capacity that's half the size,' he said. So even importing these batteries from China, 'GM must feel that the net cost makes sense on a temporary basis. It's probably going to still be cheaper than building now with nickel-rich cells.' Rare magnet agreement in Texas GM signed a multiyear supply agreement with Texas-based Noveon Magnetics for rare earth magnets in an effort to decrease reliance on foreign-sourced materials. Automakers, especially those focused on EVs, are among the largest industrial consumers of rare earth materials and have struggled in recent months to obtain supply tied up in the fluctuating tariff environment. Noveon is the sole operational manufacturer of sintered neodymium-iron-boron rare earth magnets, the most powerful available commercially, in the U.S. The magnets are deployed in the motors of electric and hybrid vehicles among other uses. Noveon said in a news release the agreement is to supply rare earth magnets to support GM's full-size SUVs and trucks. Rare earth magnets are seen as the most efficient way to power EVs and are known to improve torque. GM also maintains a relationship for rare earth magnets with California-based MP Materials, the only active and scaled rare earth production site in America. MP Materials broke ground in 2022 on its first rare earth metal, alloy and magnet factory in Fort Worth, Texas, where it will take the mined minerals and make them into finished alloy and magnets for GM's EVs starting later this year. Automakers require multiple sources for magnets because different grades of magnets are used for different applications. Magnets from MP are destined for electric vehicle drive motors, for example, while the deal with Noveon will supply magnets for internal-combustion engine truck production. How AI is being used to boost efficiency and security at truck terminal gates

A new automated gate platform from Outpost is designed to capture more reliable data as trucks enter and exit terminals and shipping sites. (Outpost Photo) Outpost, the Austin-based operator of truck terminals across the U.S., announced Thursday that it's rolling out a gate automation platform developed by the company's engineering team located in Seattle. The platform uses computer vision and artificial intelligence in a bid to cut costs, improve security, eliminate entry and exit delays, and automatically capture more reliable data. Outpost trained and tested the platform across more than 1 million gate events at the more than 20 properties that it owns, and is making the technology available to shippers, enterprise fleets, and other terminal operators. Human gate operators have long been considered a necessary cost of doing business across the trucking industry. According to Outpost, staffing a single gate 24/7 typically costs $25,000 per month. But manual checks can miss critical issues like trailer mismatches, equipment condition, and unauthorized access. The gate automation platform is built to understand every vehicle, driver, document, and anomaly, and continuously learn and improve with each gate event. Key capabilities — which enable drivers to enter and exit a yard without stopping — include: Multi-part vehicle identification : Detecting vehicle type, make, model, color, trailer class, and fuel type. : Detecting vehicle type, make, model, color, trailer class, and fuel type. Situational awareness : Tracking equipment movement, speed, full stops, tailgates, and gate malfunctions. : Tracking equipment movement, speed, full stops, tailgates, and gate malfunctions. Document and cargo intelligence: Extracting data from bills of lading and similar paperwork; detecting trailer and container cargo. The platform also features the use of AI voice agents at the gate (see video above), which are capable of greeting each driver, administering standard operating procedures, answering questions, and issuing site-specific instructions. Outpost CTO Greg Akselrod said the company's mission is to 'build the backbone of freight' and extend its technology footprint beyond its own properties. 'By linking carrier terminals and drop yards into a single operational network, we're enabling a new level of visibility and coordination across the freight ecosystem, turning the gate from a cost center into a strategic control point,' Akselrod said in a statement. Omaha, Neb.-based transportation and logistics company Werner Enterprises is an early user of the new platform. 'Outpost is taking the pain out of gate operations,' said Ryan Gass, VP of Safety, Terminal Management, Security and Facilities Maintenance at Werner. 'Our drivers get through faster, our teams have better visibility, and our equipment is more secure.' Founded in 2022, Outpost raised a $12.5 million Series A investment round in April 2024. The company's engineering and marketing center is located in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood, with about a dozen employees based in the city and another 10 who report in remotely. Hyundai Tucson N Is Reportedly In The Works With A 300-HP Hybrid Powertrain

Hyundai's N Division has shaken up the performance car world since it introduced the spicy Veloster N in 2019, and its future is looking bright. The N Division is responsible for one of the most engaging and exciting EVs we have yet to see in the Ioniq 5 N, and the Ioniq 6 N is the next N model, but news just dropped that the next-generation Tucson may also be touched by the N angels with a 300-horsepower hybrid powertrain. The news that Hyundai's N Division could be planning a proper Tucson N is huge, given that the Tucson is the brand's best selling model by far. The brand's other N models are more niche than a performance compact crossover is, since the Elantra N is only sold as a sedan, and the Ioniq 5 N is an EV. Producing a properly performance-oriented hybrid crossover might just be the division's golden ticket. As a refresher, Hyundai's N Division was spearheaded by Albert Biermann, the former head of BMW's M division who is responsible for the E39 BMW M5, the E46 BMW M3, and the skunkworks BMW 1 Series M. He retired in 2021, but he remains an executive technical advisor to Hyundai's performance division. Read more: How Much Do Car Salespeople Make? The Pay Structure Explained What To Expect From A Tucson N Vice president of Hyundai's N Management Group Joon Park told Auto Express UK that the N Division will not restrict itself to EVs, but will also include a series of lighter hybrid cars including the Tucson N. He said, "We're not limiting ourselves to EVs. We will go further with the ICE-based cars as well; this is not the end of our journey. I cannot tell you exactly – but lighter, more agile, nimble, and exciting. These are the key elements that we are heading to." Park also said that Hyundai will proceed with different hybrid powertrain strategies, one for efficiency, and one for neutral efficiency, and if an N car has a hybrid system, it will be focused more on power. He said, " If we can make a smaller model with a less-weighted battery, then it can be better.' The 300-horsepower Tucson N hybrid may end up receiving a new version of Hyundai's current 1.6-liter I4 hybrid electric powertrain, and if Hyundai's other N models are any indication, it'll be a game changer in the compact crossover space. The yet-to-be-revealed 2027 Hyundai Tucson has been caught in pre-production camouflage, but its design hasn't officially been revealed as of yet. We will keep you posted with any updates we find.
